T lymphocyte numbers and functions were measured in forty-six patients with alopecia areata and thirty healthy controls. Patients with protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) or burn injury have a high incidence of infection, partly related to a secondary deficiency of cell-mediated immunity. The clinical course of a 54-year-old man with generalized lymphadenopathy bearing all physical, laboratory and histologic characteristics of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia is described. An immunologic investigation was undertaken in a patient with atopic dermatitis and infectious mononucleosis complicated by eczema herpeticum. Humoral immunity was normal. The cell-mediated immune (CMI) response was temporarily depressed during the acute phase of the illness as measured by in vivo skin tests, and in vitro tests using T-lymphocyte population, macrophage inhibition factor, and lymphocyte transformation. It is postulated that the depression of CMI caused by infectious mononucleosis precipitated the development of eczema herpeticum in this patient.

Eighteen persons involved in an epidemic of blastomycosis were followed for a period of 3 years. None of the symptomatic patients received antifungal therapy and all recovered spontaneously. During the period of follow-up observation all patients remained in excellent health, and none showed evidence of late exacerbation of the original illness. A patient with ankylosing spondylitis was found to have selective IgA deficiency and a non-heparin, immediate-acting antithrombin (antithrombin V). T cells were decreased, and serum IgG was increased. In vitro synthesis of IgG by peripheral blood lymphocytes was very high. This association of ankylosing spondylitis with the T cell and protein abnormalities is probably fortuitous but does demonstrate that severe spondylitis may evolve in the absence of IgA.

Cell infiltration is commonly observed in human renal allograft biopsies. This infiltration was investigated using electron microscopy for a more precise assessment of the nature of these cells. More than 3000 cells infiltrating twenty-five renal allograft biopsies were studied. Six cellular types were distinguished and a mean percentage of each type was calculated.
