Three-dimensional echocardiography of the athlete's heart: a comparison with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) is the most accurate cardiac ultrasound technique to assess cardiac structure. 3DE has shown close correlation with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in various populations. There is limited data on the accuracy of 3DE in athletes and its value in detecting alterations during follow-up. Indexed left and right ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDVi, RVEDVi), end-systolic volume, ejection fraction (LVEF, RVEF) and left ventricular mass (LVMi) were assessed by 3DE and CMR in two-hundred and one competitive endurance athletes (79% male) from the Pr

Recognition and Processing of Visual Information after Neuronavigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Session.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a method of noninvasive and painless stimulation of the nervous system, which is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Over the past twenty years, the TMS technique has been deployed as a tool for the diagnosis and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the treatment of mental disorders (e.g., depression). METHODS: We tested the inhibitory effects of repetitive TMS (rTMS) on reaction times to militarily relevant visual stimuli amidst distractors and on accompanying blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) sign

Magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in adults with chronic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs mostly in people with chronic liver disease and ranks sixth in terms of global incidence of cancer, and third in terms of cancer deaths. In clinical practice, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used as a second-line diagnostic imaging modality to confirm the presence of focal liver lesions suspected as hepatocellular carcinoma on prior diagnostic test such as abdominal ultrasound or alpha-fetoprotein, or both, either in surveillance programmes or in clinical settings. According to current guidelines, a single contrast-enhanced imaging study (compute

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance for the diagnosis and management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is characterized by an impaired ventricular filling resulting in the development of dyspnea and other HF symptoms. Even though echocardiography is the cornerstone to demonstrate structural and/or functional alterations of the heart as the underlying cause for the clinical presentation, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) represents the noninvasive gold standard to assess cardiac morphology, function, and tissue changes. Indeed, CMR allows quantification of biventricular volumes, mass, wall thickness, systolic function, and intra- and e

Magnetic resonance imaging features of a solitary fibrous tumor of the vulva: a case report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are commonly seen in the pleura. SFT involvement of the vulva is rare, and clinical diagnosis is mainly based on histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. We herein describe the imaging features of a 69-year-old woman with an SFT of the vulva. The SFT was hypointense on T1-weighted images, similar to muscle; however, it showed inhomogeneous hyperintensity predominantly on fat-suppressed T2-weighted images. An area of low signal intensity was evident on T2-weighted images, and the tumor showed progressive enhancement in delayed phases. The tumor also dis

Structural magnetic resonance imaging in dystonia: A systematic review of methodological approaches and findings.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Structural magnetic resonance techniques have been widely applied in neurological disorders to better understand tissue changes, probing characteristics such as volume, iron deposition and diffusion. Dystonia is a hyperkinetic movement disorder, resulting in abnormal postures and pain. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood, with normal routine clinical imaging in idiopathic forms. More advanced tools provide an opportunity to identify smaller scale structural changes which may underpin pathophysiology. This review aims to provide an overview of methodological approac

A domain adaptation benchmark for T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance image segmentation.

Accurate brain segmentation is critical for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis pipelines. Machine-learning-based brain MR image segmentation methods are among the state-of-the-art techniques for this task. Nevertheless, the segmentations produced by machine learning models often degrade in the presence of expected domain shifts between the test and train sets data distributions. These domain shifts are expected due to several factors, such as scanner hardware and software differences, technology updates, and differences in MRI acquisition parameters. Domain adaptation (DA) methods can m

Reevaluation of the topographical anatomy of the mid-thigh: A magnetic resonance and ultrasound imaging study.

Adductor canal (AC) and sciatic nerve (SN) blockades are commonly used during total knee arthroplasties for postoperative pain control. Medical professionals have begun to utilize single injection combined regional anesthesia methods due to increased patient comfort. In this study, we examined the topographical anatomy of the mid-thigh, which is recommended as the appropriate intervention level for combined AC and SN blockades, in order to provide a safe approach for clinicians. We examined 184 thigh magnetic resonance images (MRI) from 98 patients. We measured the diameter of the mid-thigh, a

Development of a magnetic nanoparticle-based method for concentrating SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.

Several virus concentration methods have been developed to increase the detection sensitivity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater, as part of applying wastewater-based epidemiology. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation method, a method widely used for concentrating viruses in wastewater, has some limitations, such as long processing time. In this study, Pegcision, a PEG-based method using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), was applied to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, with several modifications to increase its sensitivity and throughput. An enveloped

Targeting tumor cells using magnetic nanoparticles - a feasibility study in animal models.

INTRODUCTION: In non-resectable tumors, chemotherapy is crucial to improve patient survival. However, it is often accompanied by considerable side effects. Targeted delivery of chemotherapy by coupling with iron oxide superparamagnetic nanoparticles (IONP) could potentially increase efficacy while decreasing adverse systemic side effects. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of targeting nontoxic, biodegradable-IONP into tumors in-vivo by applying an external magnetic field. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Subcutaneous colon carcinoma tumors were induced in 35 mice. IONP was injected systemically, foll

Spatiotemporally Controlled Formation and Rotation of Magnetic Nanochains In Vivo for Precise Mechanotherapy of Tumors.

Systemic cancer therapy is always accompanied with toxicity to normal tissue, which has prompted concerted efforts to develop precise treatment strategies. Herein, we firstly develop an approach that enables spatiotemporally controlled formation and rotation of magnetic nanochains in vivo, allowing for precise mechanotherapy of tumor. The nanochain comprised nanocomposites of pheophorbide-A (PP) modified iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) and lanthanide-doped down-conversion NP (DCNP). In a permanent magnetic field, the nanocomposites would be aligned to form nanochain. Next, MnO2 NPs were subsequ

A denoising method for multidimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging based on compressed sensing.

Both in spectroscopy and imaging, t1-noise arising from instabilities such as temperature alterations, field-related frequency drifts, electronic and sample-spinning instabilities, or motions in in vivo experiments, affects many 2D Magnetic Resonance experiments. This work introduces a post-processing method that aims to attenuate t1-noise, by suitably averaging multiple signals/representations that have been reconstructed from the sampled data. The ensuing Compressed Sensing Multiplicative (CoSeM) denoising starts from a fully sampled 2D MR data set, discards random indirect-domain points, an

Thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-grafted magnetic-cored dendrimers for benzene uptake.

A series of thermosensitive and magneto-responsive dendrimers was synthesized based on magnetic-cored dendrimers (MCD) and carboxylic end-capped poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) to obtain PNIPAM-g-MCD. Thermo-response profiles of the PNIPAM-g-MCD from dynamic light scattering within the temperature range of 25-45 °C indicated that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM-g-MCD was 32 °C. The physical size of the PNIPAM-g-MCD decreased as the temperature increased above the LCST. The initial hydrodynamic size of the PNIPAM-g-MCDs at 25 °C was 298.6 nm and reached 226.4 n

Contained Jejunal Perforation Secondary to Ingestion of Magnet Balls in a Nonfatal Drowning Child.

Most ingested foreign bodies often pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully; however, complications such as perforation do occur. Jejunal perforation is a known complication of abdominal trauma. While gastrointestinal tract injury due to the ingested foreign body such as a toothpick, fishbone, and battery among others are common, jejunal perforation is not very common in pediatrics. We report an unusual case of jejunal perforation that was diagnosed after a child was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit for nonfatal drowning. A 15-month-old girl presented to our emergency

Histological and magnetic resonance imaging assessment of Liqoseal in a spinal in vivo pig model.

BACKGROUND: Liqoseal (Polyganics, B.V.) is a dural sealant patch for preventing postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage. It has been extensively tested preclinically and CE (Conformité Européenne) approved for human use after a first cranial in-human study. However, the safety of Liqoseal for spinal application is still unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of spinal Liqoseal application compared with cranial application using histology and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics. METHODS: Eight female Dutch Landrace pigs underwent laminectomy, durotomy with stand

Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3.

The honeycomb magnet α-RuCl3 has attracted considerable interest because it is proximate to the Kitaev Hamiltonian whose excitations are Majoranas and vortices. The thermal Hall conductivity κxy of Majorana fermions is predicted to be half-quantized. Half-quantization of κxy/T (T, temperature) was recently reported, but this observation has proven difficult to reproduce. Here, we report detailed measurements of κxy on α-RuCl3 with the magnetic field B ∥ a (zigzag axis). In our experiment, κxy/T is observed to be strongly temperature dependent between 0.5 and 10 K. We show that its temperature
