Clinical Management of COVID-19 Patients - An Update.

SARS-CoV-2 virus may cause COVID-19 disease, which causes mild-to-moderate disease in 80% of laboratory-confirmed cases which may be community-managed. A considerable age-dependent mortality is seen among elderly and other at-risk populations but among young and healthy individuals it is < 0.5%. Long-term health issues have been reported following severe COVID-19 requiring hospitalization as well as after cases of mild COVID-19 without hospitalization. Upon receiving COVID-19 suspected patients at hospitals, patients should be isolated and PPE should be worn by all health staff when in contact

Demographic and Clinical Overview of Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients during the First 17 Months of the Pandemic in Poland.

Long-term analyses of demographical and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients can provide a better overview of the clinical course of the disease. They can also help understand whether changes in infection symptomatology, disease severity, and outcome occur over time. We aimed to analyze the demographics, early symptoms of infection, laboratory parameters, and clinical manifestation of COVID-19 patients hospitalized during the first 17 months of the pandemic in Poland (March 2020-June 2021). The patients' demographical and clinical data (n = 5199) were extracted from the national SARST

Lesson learned from the 2017 measles outbreak in Italy: report from an emergency department.

Measles is a preventable disease still responsible for a number of outbreaks worldwide. Although most adults with measles recover uneventfully, measles-related complications may occur. However, as to whether every complicated case requires hospital management is still a point of debate. In this study we described the rate, clinical features and severity of measles complications in patients admitted to the ED of a tertiary-care teaching hospital during the outbreak that took place in 2017. Some insights into the impact on the health care system are reported as well. A retrospective cohort study

Prevalence and risk factors of gallstone disease in patients undergoing ultrasonography at Mulago hospital, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Gallstone disease (GSD) is the most prevalent medical condition in the pancreatobiliary system. The burden of GSD and its complications are major public health issues globally. It is a common cause of surgical intervention, contributing substantially to health care costs. Most patients are asymptomatic, however 20% become symptomatic after 10 years. Its prevalence differs among populations and remains unknown in Uganda. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of GSD in patients undergoing abdominal ultrasonography at Mulago hospital, Uganda. METHODS: This was a cr

Prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in outpatients of a large public university hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-Cov-2 and the manifestations of this infection range from an absence of symptoms all the way up to severe disease leading to death. To estimate the prevalence of past infection in a population, the most readily available method is the detection of antibodies against the virus. This study has investigated the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in outpatients of the Hospital das Clinicas, in Sao Paulo city (Brazil), which is a large university hospital belonging to the public health system that cares for patients with complex diseases who

Sex disparities in the assessment and outcomes of chest pain presentations in emergency departments.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sex differences exist in the triage, management and outcomes associated with non-traumatic chest pain presentations in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: All adults (≥18 years) with non-traumatic chest pain presentations to three EDs in Melbourne, Australia between 2009 and 2013 were retrospectively analysed. Data sources included routinely collected hospital databases. Triage scoring of the urgency of presentation, time to medical examination, cardiac troponin testing, admission to specialised care units, and in-ED and in-hospital mortality were each mode

Hospital readmission following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt: a 14-year single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a relatively common procedure used to treat complications of portal hypertension. However, only limited data exist regarding the hospital-readmission rate after TIPS placement and no studies have addressed the causes of hospital readmission. We therefore sought to identify the 30-day hospital-readmission rate after TIPS placement at our institution and to determine potential causes and predictors of readmission. METHODS: We reviewed our electronic medical-records system at our institution between 2004 and 2017

National Trends in Hospitalizations of Adults With Tetralogy of Fallot.

The population of adults with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is growing, and it is not known how the changes in age distribution, treatment strategies, and prevalence of co-morbidities impact their interaction with the health care system. We sought to analyze the frequency and reasons for hospital admissions over the past decade. We extracted serial cross-sectional data from the United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample on hospitalizations including the diagnostic code for TOF from 2000 to 2011. From 2000 to 2011, there were 20,545 admissions for subjects with TOF, with a steady increase in annual
