Although some biochemical dose-dependent effects are revealed in erythrocytes exposed to delta 1-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) already at concentrations well below 10 microM, marked morphological changes of the erythrocyte membrane become evident, by scanning electron microscopy, only at THC concentrations beyond 15 microM. These observations provide evidence additional to previous chemical and physical studies, in which 15 microM is found to be a critical concentration with respect to the effects of TCH on erythrocyte membrane.

Follicular mucinosis is described to our knowledge for the first time in angiolymphoid hyperplasia. In general, follicular mucinosis may be regarded as a peculiar, nonspecific histological reaction pattern in follicular epithelium that may occur on its own or in association with other pathological processes, particularly lymphomas. The unusual and characteristic features of angiolymphoid hyperplasia revealed by electron microscopy are irregular vessels lined by atypical endothelial cells with convoluted nuclei and large cytoplasmic vacuoles.

Two years after typical signs and symptoms of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis developed in a 67-year-old woman, in whom locally effective steroids were not used for treatment, a lamellar graft was transplanted because of marked visual disturbances that were due to corneal opacities. Histopathology of the cornea revealed notable changes in the superficial stroma, including Bowman's membrane, with some lymphocytic infiltration of the stroma and the overlying epithelium. Electron microscopy showed no virus-like particles.

The rare variant of opalescent dentin associated with enamel defect was found in a 1 1/2-year-old boy. The pulp chambers and root canals of the affected deciduous teeth were very large, with no sign of obliteration. The enamel layer of those teeth was markedly reduced in thickness, and the enamel prisms were not recognized even by scanning electron microscopy. The mantle dentin was abnormal, as were other portions of dentin.

A mesothelioma of the spermatic cord occurred at the site of multiple hernial repairs. The aggressive biologic behavior of this tumor is exhibited by its early lymph node invasion and extensive metastases to the pleural cavities, lungs, and spleen. These tumor cells contained a large amount of stable of stable glycogen-like carbohydrate insoluble in formalin and tolerating postmortem changes. Electron microscopy revealed features similar to those mesotheliomas arising from body cavities.

By cloning from cultivation in vitro of a human hepatoblastoma 3 epithelial cell lines were established, all of which produced alpha-fetoprotein and one of which did albumin in culture. Observation with electron microscopy demonstrated desmosomes and glycogen granules in the cytoplasm of these cells. The morphology, growth characteristics, alpha-fetoprotein production, heterotransplantability, and karyology of the cloned cells suggested that these clonal lines were derived from the tumor cells and retained their malignant characteristics.

Young Friesian steers were fed for nine months on copper supplemented or depleted diets. Immediately after they had been killed, tissues were taken from the myocardium for examination by electron microscopy. Copper deficiency was associated with extensive changes in myofibrillar and mitochondrial morphology and distribution. It is suggested that the ultra-structural changes in the myocardium were specifically attributable to copper deficiency, the most likely underlying biochemical defect being lost of cytochrome oxidase activity.

Following acute tetraethyllead intoxication in rabbits classic neurofibrillary tangles develop. As studied by electron microscopy, such tangles develop in hydropic degenerating neurons and consist primarily of bundles of 200 A diameter smooth tubules of enormous length. In two of 16 animals a few twisted tubules (periodicity of 800 A) also could be found. The significance of these lead-induced twisted tubules, so characteristic of Alzheimer's pre-senile dementia in man, is discussed.

This study examined primary cilia on cultured human and rabbit peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMC) and investigated factors that influence ciliary expression. Lipid droplets were found to form all along the axon of the giant cerebral neuron (GCN) of the sea hare Aplysia californica when the cell was placed in culture. The emission of yellow fluorescence by the droplets after exposure of the neuron to Nile red and their uniformly dark appearance in electron micrographs of axons fixed with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide identified them as lipid droplets. Fungal-bacterial multispecies biofilms play a major role in failure of medical silicone devices, such as voice prostheses in laryngectomiy. In this study, we determined the effect of Lactobacilli supernatant (cell free) on mixed biofilm formation of fungi and bacteria on silicone in vitro. Lactobacilli supernatant inhibited the adhesion (90 min) of mixed fungi and bacteria species with an efficiency of >90%.
