Assisted chanting and Buddhist end-of-life care in contemporary China.

OBJECTIVES: The intersection of medicine and Buddhist spiritual care in institutional end-of-life settings remains underexplored, particularly regarding post-death rituals. This qualitative study examines how Buddhist assisted chanting (zhunian, ) - a 24-hour continuous recitation of Amitabha Buddha's name - functions as a model of holistic end-of-life care that addresses the spiritual, emotional, psychological, and relational dimensions of dying. METHODS: Semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with 34 participants (18 volunteers, 8 patients, and 8 family caregivers) at the Lotu

Identity-congruence policy endorsement: A study of cognitive mediation in app-based fitness compliance intentions among Chinese college students.

Despite the widespread implementation of app-based fitness policies in Chinese universities, student noncompliance (e.g., proxy-running) remains a prevalent issue, undermining the policy goal of improving student health. This practical dilemma highlights a critical theoretical gap: while policy endorsement is theorized to be crucial, extant literature often conflates it with general policy attitudes, obscuring its unique identity-based mechanism grounded in value congruence. To address this theory-practice divide, this study introduces and tests the concept of identity-congruence policy endors

Post-Concussion Syndrome and Functional Neurological Disorder: Diagnostic Interfaces, Risk Mechanisms, and the Functional Overlay Model.

BACKGROUND: Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), including Functional Cognitive Disorder (FCD), are two frequently encountered but diagnostically complex conditions. While PCS is conceptualized as a sequela of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), FND/FCD encompasses symptoms incompatible with recognized neurological disease, often arising in the absence of structural brain damage. Yet, both conditions exhibit considerable clinical overlap-particularly in the domains of cognitive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, and symptom persistence despite negative

A model of acceptance for family caregivers in the management of severe mental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Managing severe mental disorders at home by family members as caregivers is considered the most efficient option compared to hospital care. However, on the other hand, it can lead to the emergence of physical and psychological burdens on the caregiver. To improve their role optimally in caregiving, families will undergo psychological adaptation, reaching the highest level of acceptance. Other factors, such as stigma, social support, social norms, caregiving experience and personal characteristics, influence family acceptance. This study aims to determine a family acceptance model

Utility of the Full ECG Waveform for Stress Classification.

The detection of psychological stress using the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is most commonly based on the detection of the R peak-the most prominent part of the ECG waveform-and the heart rate variability (HRV) measurements derived from it. For stress detection algorithms focused on short-duration time windows, there is potential benefit in including HRV features derived from the detection of smaller peaks within the ECG waveform: the P, Q, S, and T waves. However, the potential drawback of using these small peaks is their smaller magnitude and subsequent susceptibility to noise, making the

Catastrophic cognitions about coronavirus: the Oxford psychological investigation of coronavirus questionnaire [TOPIC-Q].

BACKGROUND: Cognitive therapies are developed on the principle that specific cognitive appraisals are key determinants in the development and maintenance of mental health disorders. It is likely that particular appraisals of the coronavirus pandemic will have explanatory power for subsequent mental health outcomes in the general public. To enable testing of this hypothesis we developed a questionnaire assessing coronavirus-related cognitions. METHODS: 12 285 participants completed online a 46-item pool of cognitions about coronavirus and six measures of different mental health problems. The s

Psychological therapies for the treatment of mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries affected by humanitarian crises.

BACKGROUND: People living in humanitarian settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are exposed to a constellation of stressors that make them vulnerable to developing mental disorders. Mental disorders with a higher prevalence in these settings include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive, anxiety, somatoform (e.g. medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS)), and related disorders. A range of psychological therapies are used to manage symptoms of mental disorders in this population. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness and acceptability of psychologic

Predicting multiple mental health outcomes in adolescents using explainable machine learning models.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and stress, are an increasing public health concern, yet the factors associated with different mental health outcomes may vary across domains. This study investigated shared and outcome-specific predictive features of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and psychological well-being using explainable machine learning models. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,088 adolescents aged 13-18 years recruited from secondary schools in Wuhan, China, using multistage cluster sampling. Participants comp

[Multi-disciplinary comprehensive management of cancer pain: current status and prospects].

Cancer pain not only affects the physiological functions of patients with malignancies but also significantly impairs their mental health and quality of life. Single-discipline treatment approaches are often insufficient to address the complex and diverse needs of pain management. The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) model integrates expertise from pain medicine, oncology, psychology, rehabilitation, and other relevant fields to provide comprehensive care through pain assessment, individualized treatment, and continuous follow-up. This review summarizes the current status of MDT-based cancer pain

Current situation and correlates of perceived stigma among people living with HIV: a cross-sectional study in China.

Addressing stigma is vital to improving the well-being of people living with HIV (PLWH). This cross-sectional study, including 3,040 PLWH across five Chinese cities (Nov 2022-Mar 2023), found 1261 (41.5%) reported perceived stigma. Medical-related stigma was most common (19.9%). Stigma prevalence was higher in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen (51.3%) than in Kunming and Nanning (32.3%). Generalized linear modeling linked stigma frequency to lower social support and caregivers' stigma; psychological impact was tied to comorbidities and caregivers' stigma. Findings call for tailored, collaborativ

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Enhanced Behavior Therapy as An Intervention for Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder (Skin Picking): A Review.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) is the most empirically supported treatment of trichotillomania. Support for A-EBT for excoriation disorder is budding. In this article, we review the A-EBT model, including support for targeting psychological inflexibility, as well as the use of traditional behavioral procedures to reduce non-focused behaviors. To date there are 17 studies investigating A-EBT for trichotillomania and skin picking across ages and treatment delivery methods (individual, group, telehealth, and asynchronous web-based delivery). The work has

Persistent Neurological, Dissociative, and Amnestic Symptoms Following a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in an Adolescent: A Complex Case of Conversion Disorder.

The diagnosis of conversion disorder may be given to patients with unexplained neurological symptoms after the exclusion of medical and organic etiologies, suggesting a psychiatric etiology. It requires a thorough examination of all contributing factors across the biopsychosocial model. With a variety of possible presentations, the evaluation and treatment of conversion disorder should reflect its complexity. This case report describes a case of conversion disorder complicated by mild traumatic brain injury and acute psychological re-traumatization in an adolescent with social anxiety and focu

Mixed methods in health psychology: theoretical and practical considerations of the third paradigm.

This article has two purposes: to examine why mixed methods is a legitimate approach particularly well suited to health psychology; and to describe the challenges inherent in conducting mixed methods research. First, arguments justifying the status of mixed methods as a third paradigm alongside solely quantitative and qualitative frameworks are discussed. Second, a qualitatively driven model of mixed methods is illustrated using examples from a research programme exploring the psychosocial impact of a rare, genetic skin disorder. The flexibility of a mixed methods approach enables the research

Assessing underlying processes of implicit weight bias: a diffusion model analysis.

Weight bias is a widespread issue, yet its cognitive mechanisms remain unclear. Using cognitive modeling across two studies ([Formula: see text] = 164, [Formula: see text] = 60), we investigated the processes underlying implicit weight bias. We assessed implicit weight bias with an Affective Priming-like Task, in which participants see a prime and then classify adjectives as positive or negative. Despite instructions to ignore the prime, responses are typically faster when prime and target share the same valence. In our studies, participants were primed with four gender-matched body shapes, of

Any-step dynamics model improves future predictions for offline reinforcement learning via hierarchical roll-out.

Offline reinforcement learning constrains policy optimization within a given dataset, avoiding the high costs and unpredictable risks associated with online sampling in the real world. Model-based approaches provide a promising direction for offline reinforcement learning, as extensive policy explorations and evaluations can happen within the data-driven dynamics model, transcending the limitations imposed by the dataset boundaries. However, accurately predicting long-horizon sequential steps in the learned dynamics model remains a significant challenge. Model roll-out in previous methods reli

The effect of depression on bone fusion in a rabbit posterolateral bone fusion model.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of depression on bone fusion in the rabbit spine using Katz's unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) model. METHODS: A total of 12 male New Zealand rabbits were divided randomly into 6 control and 6 experimental groups. Each rabbit underwent the same surgical procedure. An autograft was harvested from the iliac crest and put into the L5-L6 space, where the laminae and facets were decorticated. The animals of the control group were followed up for 8 weeks under standard laboratory conditions. The ones in the experimental group

The Prototype Willingness Model of Sports Betting: A Yearlong Within-Person Study of Young Adults.

Burgeoning evidence of sports betting harms among young adults highlights the need to refine our understanding of psychosocial processes driving sports betting behavior. This study longitudinally examined sports betting patterns over time within the Prototype Willingness Model (PWM), a dual-process behavioral model comprised of both a reasoned and socially reactive component. Participants included 210 18-29 year olds (77.1% male; mean age 24.5) who reported placing at least two sports bets in the past month (at screening). Participants reported past two-week sports betting frequency (i.e., num

Altered reversal and extinction learning in the DMSXL mouse model of type I myotonic dystrophy (DM1): An exploratory study.

BackgroundCognitive changes in type 1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1) have a pronounced negative effect on quality of life measures. Despite this, the neural basis of these changes is poorly understood. DM1 patients demonstrate deficits in motivation and cognitive flexibility, reflective of apathy and obsessive-compulsive / autistic-like traits.ObjectiveThese traits can be readily assessed using reversal learning and appetitive extinction tasks. Reversal learning assesses the ability to learn following a change in a rule and can evaluate cognitive flexibility and habitual responding, while appetitive

Mental models for inclusive, socially-just disaster planning: a multi-community study in Saint Martin after Hurricane Irma.

Local perspectives provide different insights into disaster planning and response as compared to those of experts. Eliciting them, however, can be challenging, particularly for marginalised groups whose viewpoints have historically been excluded from planning processes. Fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) provides a semi-quantitative approach to representing the collective understanding or 'mental models' of diverse individuals and communities. This study involved 23 FCM interviews across three neighbourhoods of Saint Martin to comprehend: (i) how individuals' mental models of Hurricane Irma (2017)
