INTRODUCTION: The release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) is increased in sarcoidosis patients. TNF-alpha exerts its effect by binding to specific cell surface receptors. There are only fragmentary data concerning the expression of tumor necrosis factor receptors (TNFRs) on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and peripheral blood (PB) lymphocytes. The aim of the study was to evaluate TNFRI (CD120a) and TNFRII (CD120b) expression on T cells and the level of soluble TNFRs in specimens of patients with different clinical manifestation and clinical outcome of sarcoidosis.

We describe a case of subcapsular haematoma of the right lobe (SHL) and multifocal necrosis of the left lobe (MNL) of the liver following umbilical vein catheterisation (UVC) in a female at 24 weeks' gestation. SHL and MNL have been described as uncommon complications following umbilical vein catheterisation. To our knowledge this is the first time both complications have developed in the same patient. SHL should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hypovolaemic shock in this group of patients.

We examined whether neutralization of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha after intranasal exposure of mice to Histoplasma capsulatum was necessary for control of primary or secondary infection. Using a case-control study design, we studied the factors associated with HIV-related avascular necrosis (AN). During a 6-year period, 12 symptomatic AN cases were validated, and each case was individually matched with 3 control cases. A conditional logistic regression model showed that current alcohol consumption and a history of steroid use were the only factors associated with the occurrence of AN.

Congenital afibrinogenaemia is a rare genetic disorder transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait and characterized by the complete absence of fibrinogen in the plasma.
