Objective: To describe the clinicopathological features of synchronous mucinous metaplasia and neoplasia of the female genital tract (SMMN-FGT). Brevibacteria are part of the normal flora of the skin and adjacent structures, but have been increasingly encountered in humans as opportunistic pathogens and have been isolated from various clinical specimens, generally causing infections in immuno-compromised patients. We present a case of a port-a-cath-related bacteraemia caused by Brevibacterium casei in a woman with a prior history of bilateral breast cancer. The clinical outcome was favourable.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) often presents with two or more anatomically separate foci. A long-standing argument is whether this multifocality is the result of multiple independent tumors ("multicentricity") or of intrathyroidal spread originating from a single tumor mass, presumably through permeation of intrathyroidal lymph vessels. We reexamined this issue with a clonality assay and compared our results with those in the literature. A total of 27 nodules from 11 female patients with bilateral PTC treated with total thyroidectomy were investigated for clonality using the HUMARA assay.

Esophageal leiomyomatosis and leiomyoma are benign neoplastic lesions composed of proliferating smooth muscle cells. Although rare, these 2 conditions may occur simultaneously in an individual patient. Symptomatic patients often require surgical management. Several reports have indicated that black women with breast cancer have a poorer prognosis than white women. To investigate this phenomenon and to identify some of the underlying reasons, 172 patients with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast, who were managed similarly, were studied. Primary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) is extremely rare although involvement of malignant lymphoma into adrenals is common. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the utility of routine intraoperative frozen-section histologic analysis during partial nephrectomy to ensure negative surgical margins. Partial nephrectomy has gained acceptance for surgical treatment of small renal cancers. Many surgeons send specimens for intraoperative frozen section histologic analysis to ensure negative margins.

The majority of Spitz nevi are acquired solitary lesions. Multiple Spitz nevi are rare and may develop on hyperpigmented skin. We report a 16-year-old girl with multiple Spitz nevi arranged on a café au lait macule. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for S-100 and HMB-45. Of interest, expression of Polo-like kinase (PLK), a novel proliferation marker that recently proved to be positive in up to 98% of malignant melanoma cells, showed positivity in 40% of the nevus cells. We report on a 63-year-old female patient with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS). In the course of this disease two carcinomas of the colon, a kerato-acanthoma and multiple sebaceous gland tumours, including four sebaceous carcinomas, appeared. This case is thought to be a hereditary form as one of daughters was also found to have a sebaceous epithelioma. MTS is a mostly autosomal-dominant disease with the association of sebaceous gland tumours and internal carcinomas. The results of surgical treatment and causes of failure in 109 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx were analyzed. The 5-year survival was significantly related to the stage of the disease (stage I, 74%; stage II, 63%; stage III, 32%; and stage IV, 14%) and the preoperative nodal staging (N0, 57%; N1, 28%; N2, 6%; and N3, 0%), but not related to the extent of tumor resection. The local control rate was 86% and the majority of the local recurrences occurred at the upper resection margin. AIMS: We examined the risk factors and prognostic factors for synchronous esophageal neoplasia (SEN) by comparing the characteristics of hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) patients with and without SEN.
METHODS: We examined 183 patients who were treated with definitive radiotherapy for HPC. Lugol chromoendoscopy screening of the esophagus was performed in all patients before chemoradiotherapy.
