Use of Deep Learning for Detailed Severity Characterization and Estimation of 5-Year Risk Among Patients With Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

IMPORTANCE: Although deep learning (DL) can identify the intermediate or advanced stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) as a binary yes or no, stratified gradings using the more granular Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) 9-step detailed severity scale for AMD provide more precise estimation of 5-year progression to advanced stages. The AREDS 9-step detailed scale's complexity and implementation solely with highly trained fundus photograph graders potentially hampered its clinical use, warranting development and use of an alternate AREDS simple scale, which although valuable, has

Mechanomyography-Based Wearable Monitor of Quasi-Isometric Muscle Fatigue for Motor Neural Prostheses.

A motor neural prosthesis based on surface functional electrical stimulation (sFES) can restore functional movement (e.g., standing, walking) in patients with a spinal cord injury (SCI). sFES generates muscle contractions in antigravity muscles and allows balance-assisted standing. This induced standing has several benefits, such as improved cardiovascular function, decreased incidence of urinary infections, reduced joint contractures, and muscle atrophy. The duration of sFES assisted standing is limited due to the quick onset of muscle fatigue. Currently, there is no method available to relia

Systems Genetic Analyses Highlight a TGFβ-FOXO3 Dependent Striatal Astrocyte Network Conserved across Species and Associated with Stress, Sleep, and Huntington's Disease.

Recent systems-based analyses have demonstrated that sleep and stress traits emerge from shared genetic and transcriptional networks, and clinical work has elucidated the emergence of sleep dysfunction and stress susceptibility as early symptoms of Huntington's disease. Understanding the biological bases of these early non-motor symptoms may reveal therapeutic targets that prevent disease onset or slow disease progression, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this complex clinical presentation remain largely unknown. In the present work, we specifically examine the relationship between thes

Screening of inherited metabolic abnormalities in 56 children with intractable epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a common children's neural disease that is largely controlled by anti-epileptic drugs. Nevertheless, children experience repeated attacks that develop into intractable epilepsy (IE). The aim of the present study was to examine the inherited metabolic abnormalities in children with IE to provide early etiological and symptomatic treatment. Urine and blood samples of 56 children with IE served as the experimental group and 56 cases of children with IE, who were successfully treated served as the control group, and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and tandem mass spect

New insights into the phenotypic covariance structure of the anthropoid cranium.

In complex organisms, suites of non-random, highly intercorrelated phenotypic traits, organized according to their developmental history and forming semi-autonomous units (i.e. modules), have the potential to impose constraints on morphological diversification or to improve evolvability. Because of its structural, developmental and functional complexity, the cranium is arguably one of the best models for studying the interplay between developmental history and the need for various parts of a structure to specialize in different functions. This study evaluated the significance of two specific t

Interpretable whole-brain prediction analysis with GraphNet.

Multivariate machine learning methods are increasingly used to analyze neuroimaging data, often replacing more traditional "mass univariate" techniques that fit data one voxel at a time. In the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) literature, this has led to broad application of "off-the-shelf" classification and regression methods. These generic approaches allow investigators to use ready-made algorithms to accurately decode perceptual, cognitive, or behavioral states from distributed patterns of neural activity. However, when applied to correlated whole-brain fMRI data these methods

Distinct patterns of notochord mineralization in zebrafish coincide with the localization of Osteocalcin isoform 1 during early vertebral centra formation.

BACKGROUND: In chondrichthyans, basal osteichthyans and tetrapods, vertebral bodies have cartilaginous anlagen that subsequently mineralize (chondrichthyans) or ossify (osteichthyans). Chondrocytes that form the vertebral centra derive from somites. In teleost fish, vertebral centrum formation starts in the absence of cartilage, through direct mineralization of the notochord sheath. In a second step, the notochord is surrounded by somite-derived intramembranous bone. In several small teleost species, including zebrafish (Danio rerio), even haemal and neural arches form directly as intramembran

Developmental change in regional brain structure over 7 months in early adolescence: comparison of approaches for longitudinal atlas-based parcellation.

Early adolescence is a time of rapid change in neuroanatomy and sexual development. Precision in tracking changes in brain morphology with structural MRI requires image segmentation with minimal error. Here, we compared two approaches to achieve segmentation by image registration with an atlas to quantify regional brain structural development over a 7-month interval in normal, early adolescent boys and girls. Adolescents were scanned twice (average interval=7.3 months), yielding adequate data for analysis in 16 boys (baseline age 10.9 to 13.9 years; Tanner Stage=1 to 4) and 12 girls (baseline

Mid-term clinical results of minimally invasive decompression and posterolateral fusion with percutaneous pedicle screws versus conventional approach for degenerative spondylolisthesis with spinal stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: In order to minimize perioperative invasiveness and improve the patients' functional capacity of daily living, we have performed minimally invasive lumbar decompression and posterolateral fusion (MIS-PLF) with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation for degenerative spondylolisthesis with spinal stenosis. Although several minimally invasive fusion procedures have been reported, no study has yet demonstrated the efficacy of MIS-PLF in degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbar spine. This study prospectively compared the mid-term clinical outcome of MIS-PLF with those of conventiona

Influence of lumbar epidural injection volume on pain relief for radicular leg pain and/or low back pain.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Epidural injections are commonly used to treat low back disorders. It has been proposed that in addition to the anti-inflammatory effects, injected material displaces the dura forward and inward, producing a stretch of the nerve roots that leads to lysis of neural adhesions. Despite this, there are no controlled trials investigating the effect of volume injected with pain as an independent outcome. PURPOSE: Review the existing literature to assess the effect of epidural injection volume on relief of radicular leg and low back pain. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review of pub

Percutaneous vertebral augmentation: an elevation in adjacent-level fracture risk in kyphoplasty as compared with vertebroplasty.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are being increasingly treated with minimally invasive bone augmentation techniques such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. Both are reported to be an effective means of pain relief; however, there may be an increased risk of developing subsequent VCFs after such procedures. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness and complication profile of kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty in a single patient series. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A clinical series of 36 patients with VCFs treated by vertebral augmentat

Response inhibition deficits in externalizing child psychiatric disorders: an ERP-study with the Stop-task.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from behavioural studies suggests that impaired motor response inhibition may be common to several externalizing child psychiatric disorders, although it has been proposed to be the core-deficit in AD/HD. Since similar overt behaviour may be accompanied by different covert brain activity, the aim of this study was to investigate both brain-electric-activity and performance measures in three groups of children with externalizing child psychiatric disorders and a group of normal controls. METHODS: A Stop-task was used to measure specific aspects of response inhibition in 10

Is thermal scanner losing its bite in mass screening of fever due to SARS?

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a highly infectious disease caused by a coronavirus. Screening to detect a potential SARS infected person plays an important role in preventing the spread of SARS. The use of infrared thermal imaging cameras has been proposed as a noninvasive, speedy, cost effective and fairly accurate means for mass blind screening of potential SARS infected persons. Infrared thermography provides a digital image showing temperature patterns. This has been previously utilized in the detection of inflammation and nerve dysfunctions. It is believed that IR cameras can

Dual-Approach AI for Pediatric Supracondylar Fractures: Multiclass Radiograph Classification with Explainable AI and Diagnostic Meta-analysis of AI-Based Computational Approaches.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric supracondylar fractures (SCFs) are the most common elbow injury in children, yet radiographic diagnosis remains challenging due to complex developmental anatomy, with initially missed fracture rates of 17-77%. Prior artificial intelligence (AI) studies have been limited to binary classification frameworks without Gartland subtype differentiation, and no diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis specific to supracondylar fractures exists. This study aimed to develop the first multiclass deep learning model for SCF detection and Gartland classification and to sys

MRI-based evidence of rectus capitis posterior minor hypertrophy and its correlation with disease duration in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent research in Parkinson's disease (PD) has increasingly focused on alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics and glymphatic system (GS) function. The myodural bridge (MDB), a structure connecting the suboccipital muscles to the spinal dura mater, is involved in the regulation of CSF dynamics. The rectus capitis posterior minor (RCPmi) is a core component of the myodural bridge complex (MDBC). This study employed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate morphological changes in the RCPmi in PD patients and to explore their potential association with CSF dynamics and

Comparison of safety of lecanemab and donanemab: a real-world disproportionality analysis using the FDA adverse event reporting system.

BACKGROUND: Lecanemab and donanemab are anti-amyloid-β (Aβ) monoclonal antibodies recently approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although both agents have demonstrated therapeutic potential, their post-marketing adverse event reporting profiles remain insufficiently characterized and compared in spontaneous reporting systems. This study aimed to systematically compare adverse event signals associated with these two drugs using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System database, with sex-stratified and sensitivity analyses performed to support the main findings.
