Getting back on track after treatment of cancer: A qualitative interview study of cancer survivors' experiences.

OBJECTIVE: An increasing number of people resumes life after cancer treatment. Although the (long-term) side-effects of cancer and its treatment can be significant, less is known about the impact on cancer survivors' participation in daily life. The aim of this study was to explore the common experiences of cancer survivors in resuming life after treatment. METHODS: A semi-structured interview study was conducted among 22 cancer survivors having a favorable prognosis after treatment. Purposive sampling was used to select a variable sample in terms of diagnoses (e.g. breast cancer, colorectal

Short-Term Changes in Depressive Symptoms Among Patients with Alzheimer's Disease Following a Precision Medicine Intervention.

Background/Objectives: The ReCODE (Reversal of Cognitive Decline) protocol, a precision medicine program for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), has demonstrated promising results in improving cognitive function. However, its impact on mood, specifically depressive symptoms, has been less explored. Depression is highly prevalent in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and AD, shares common risk factors (e.g., systemic inflammation), and negatively affects quality of life and disease trajectory. This study evaluated whether participation in the ReCODE program is associated with measur

Using Multiple Anthropomorphic Measures to Estimate Height in Muscular Dystrophies and Its Impact on Lung Function.

BACKGROUND: An accurate height estimate is important for assessing pulmonary function, and body mass index. If a patient cannot stand, an accurate standing height cannot be directly measured. Knee-heel length, arm span, ulnar length, and tibial length have been studied in otherwise healthy populations as single measurements for height estimation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation of ulnar length, tibial length, arm span, and knee-heel length to standing height in children with neuromuscular diseases. METHODS: Children and adolescents with neuromuscular diseases were recruited for particip

MAFLD in Vietnam: a neglected public health challenge requiring urgent policy action.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is rapidly emerging as a major public health challenge in Vietnam, driven by rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and lifestyle changes. Although it contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality, and economic burden, MAFLD remains under-recognized within national health strategies and is largely neglected in non-communicable disease (NCD) frameworks. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiological, clinical, and health systems data on MAFLD in Vietnam, drawing on studies published between 2015 and 2024 alongside internatio

Toward standardization in esophageal cancer surgery: patterns of practice across high-volume European centers.

Esophageal cancer (EC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. For patients with locally advanced, non-metastatic EC, advances in perioperative care, and surgical techniques have led to improved outcomes; however, significant variation persists, and standardization remains limited. This study aimed to characterize current practice patterns among expert surgeons at high-volume European centers through a structured, in-depth survey. Eight expert upper gastrointestinal surgeons from European centers performing >60 esophagectomies annually participated in comprehensive inter

Assessing the socio-economic burden of inherited and inflammatory neuromuscular diseases (BIND study): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) are rare multisystem, genetic or acquired disorders causing weakness and/or sensory loss. It is essential for governments, insurance providers, and broader society to have a better understanding of the burden of illness of NMDs. Our goal is to assess the social and economic burden of Canadians living with NMDs, encompassing schooling and education achievement, health-related quality-of-life, and labour force participation and productivity. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a national, cross-sectional survey of individuals living with a NMD and t

Factors associated with the need for care escalation in patients with acute heart failure referred from the emergency department to home hospitalization.

OBJECTIVE: Home hospitalization (HH) directly from the emergency department (ED) in patients requiring admission is, overall, a safe and effective alternative. However, in some cases, HH requires escalation of care, and the patient must be transferred to the hospital to complete treatment under conventional inpatient care. This study analyzes the factors associated with the need for such escalation in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). METHODS: Two hospitals reviewed patients with AHF admitted to HH over a 3-year period. Escalation of care was defined as transfer from HH to the hospital

Real-world data of single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy: a German-wide prospective cohort study among 276 individuals.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency, with a lifetime risk of 8.6% in men and 6.7% in women. The standard of care is appendectomy, which can be performed using a single-incision laparoscopic approach. The evidence on single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA) is predominantly based on randomized controlled trials, often excluding patients with comorbidities or complex clinical profiles. This study aimed to generate real-world data (RWD) on adult patients undergoing SILA to assess its safety, feasibility, and clinical outcomes in routine practice. In addition, the

Instruments for measuring fatigue in patients with brain tumours: protocol for a COSMIN--based systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related fatigue occurs at high rates and can harm patients' quality of life and even reduce survival, especially in patients with brain tumours. Many measures have been developed to assess this condition, but there have been no systematic reviews evaluating the metrological properties of these tools, and it is difficult to determine the measures with optimal properties and the conditions under which they should be applied. Therefore, we need to collect existing evidence and choose the most reasonable instrument. Our aim is to identify all instruments used to measure fatigu
