Period, age, and cohort effects on substance use are differentiated for American youth 18 to 24 years old during the period from 1976 to 1982. The data are provided by the Monitoring the Future project, an ongoing study which employs a cohort-sequential design. Weighted least squares regression is used to find plausible and parsimonious models to account for the observed variation in 12 different classes of drugs, both licit and illicit. Gynecomastia is frequently observed in male patients undergoing hemodialysis; however, its mechanism is still unclear. Hormonal studies were performed in a group of 39 men, aged 50 +/- 14 years, dialysed for 2.8 +/- 2 years. 23 (59 p. 100) of them had gynecomastia. Peripheral hypogonadism and hyperprolactinemia were found in all the hemodialysed patients. The etiology of Legg-Perthes disease of the hip is unknown. One current hypothesis suggests that an environmental factor affects the growth mechanism at a critical prenatal stage. We have reported that prior ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure significantly delayed development of contact sensitivity to nitrogen mustard (Halprin et al., 1981). We felt that this effect was due to disruption of functional Langerhans cells in skin by UVR and suggested that periodic UVR treatments might prevent sensitization to the mustard. The occurrence of periodic apnea (apnea during periodic breathing) was studied in 27 normal, full-term infants during the first five weeks of life. The rate and mean length of apnea were analyzed both with respect to sleep state and with respect to respiratory pattern, ie, periodic vs nonperiodic breathing. In a retrospective analysis covering a 14-year-period (1962-1975) the annual incidence of primary intracranial neoplasms in an isolated population of about 40,000 (the Faroese) was found to be 9.9 in 100,000. Out of the 52 patients with intracranial neoplasms 20 were alive, while 32 had died when the study was closed on 31st December 1979. Eighteen out of the 34 patients with supratentorial tumours and one patient with acoustic neurinoma had epilepsy.

The adverse effects of amphetamine addiction during pregnancy and the neonatal period were studied in 69 Swedish women. Almost one-third of the women (Group I) succeeded in overcoming their addiction in early pregnancy.
