Surgical Outcomes of Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Function in a Referral Center.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is used in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) for renal replacement therapy. However, it can be associated with the risk of post-surgical complications. The objectives of this study were to report our experience with the placement of PD catheters for 14 years and to assess the incidence of PD malfunction and other PD-related complications, including the effect of adopting minimally invasive techniques for catheter placement. The objectives of this study were to report our experience with placement of PD catheters for 14-year period and to assess the incidence

Peritoneal macrophages attenuate retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite outgrowth.

Inflammation is a critical pathophysiological process that modulates neuronal survival in the central nervous system after disease or injury. However, the effects and mechanisms of macrophage activation on neuronal survival remain unclear. In the present study, we co-cultured adult Fischer rat retinas with primary peritoneal macrophages or zymosan-treated peritoneal macrophages for 7 days. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed that peritoneal macrophages reduced retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite outgrowth in the retinal explant compared with the control group. The addition of zymosan t

Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics of Caspofungin in Plasma and Peritoneal Fluid of Liver Transplant Recipients.

The weaker diffusion of echinocandins in the peritoneal fluid (PF) could promote Candida-resistant isolates. The aim of this study was to analyze the pharmacokinetics (PK)/pharmacodynamics (PD) of caspofungin in plasma and PF samples from liver transplant recipients. Liver transplant patients received caspofungin as postoperative prophylaxis. Caspofungin concentrations were quantified in plasma and PF samples on days 1, 3, and 8. Data were analyzed using nonlinear mixed-effect modeling and Monte Carlo simulations. Area under the curve (AUC) values for plasma and PF were simulated under three d

Cellular and humoral peritoneal immunity to Mesocestoides vogae metacestode infection in mice.

BACKGROUND: Here, Mesocestoides (M.) vogae infection in mice is proposed as a suitable experimental model for studying the immunity in the peritoneal cavity of mice. METHODS: To investigate the kinetics of immune parameters in M. vogae-infected mice, we detected, using flow cytometry, the expression of selected lymphoid and myeloid markers within the peritoneal cell population at day 0, 3, 6, 10, 14, 19, 25, 30 and 35 post-infection. Then, using ELISA, we analyzed the cytokine IFN-γ, TGF-β, IL-4 and IL-10 responses and the levels of anti-M. vogae IgG and IgM antibodies in the peritoneal lavag

Clinical Epidemiology of Systolic and Diastolic Orthostatic Hypotension in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis.

Blood pressure changes upon standing reflect a hemodynamic response, which depends on the baroreflex system and euvolemia. Dysautonomia and fluctuations in blood volume are hallmarks in kidney failure requiring replacement therapy. Orthostatic hypotension has been associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients, but neither this relationship nor the impact of changes in blood pressure has been tested in patients on peritoneal dialysis. We investigated both these relationships in a cohort of 137 PD patients. The response to orthostasis was assessed according to a standardized protocol. Twent

Accidental identification of peritoneal encapsulation during an autopsy after a car accident.

Peritoneal encapsulation is a rare congenital pathological condition. Typical of this pathology is the presence of an accessory peritoneal flap that encloses the entire mass of the small intestine. Subjects with this condition often do not show symptoms and, in most cases, finding of it is accidental. We report a case of peritoneal encapsulation, not previously identified and found during an autopsy; the deceased, positive for HIV and affected by a Kaposi's sarcoma, died following a road accident. Unlike other cases in the literature, the peritoneum encapsulated all abdominal organs and not on

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis in an AMA-M2 positive patient: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is hard to diagnose because of nonspecific symptoms and signs. It is a general consensus that EPS is classified as primary and secondary. There have been several studies discovering some high-risk factors such as liver cirrhosis, of which AMA-M2 is a biomarker, and intra-abdominal surgery such as laparoscopic surgery. Imaging studies help to diagnose EPS and exploratory laparotomy might be an alternative if imaging fails. Nowadays, laparotomy plays a key role in treating EPS, especially when medical treatments do not work and medical therapy

[Laparoscopic Extirpation of Peritoneal Dissemination of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Using ICG Imaging].

A 71-year-old man who underwent laparoscopic partial liver resection for local recurrence hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)in segment 4 one year after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation(RFA)for HCC. About 3 years after treatment, the patient showed elevation of serum level of tumor marker and a mass lesion in the round ligament on CT and EOB-MRI. We made a diagnosis of peritoneal dissemination of HCC. Laparoscopic extirpation of peritoneal dissemination using indocyanine green(ICG)imaging was performed and no other tumors were observed in the peritoneal cavity. A lesion was diagnosed as periton

I.p.-injected cationic liposomes are retained and accumulate in peritoneally disseminated tumors.

Intraperitoneal (i.p) chemotherapy is an attractive approach to treat peritoneally disseminated cancers by delivering therapeutic agents directly to the peritoneal cavity where some disseminated tumors are located. Cationic liposomes (CLs) have been used as a viable delivery carrier for i.p. chemotherapy to improve the peritoneal retention of anticancer agents. However, there are no reports on the fate of CLs following i.p. administration to the peritoneal cavity in the presence of disseminated tumors. We prepared a tumor xenograft murine model of peritoneally disseminated gastric cancer by i.

Comparison of changes in pulse wave velocity in patients on peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death of dialyzed patients. Aortic stiffness, evaluated by the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is now considered as a prognostic factor for cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney diseases. The peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients had significantly stiffer arteries. cfPWV was 9.12 ± 2.7 m/s in PD patients without significant correlation compared to hemodialysis (HD) patients (8.97 ± 2.52 m/s). In the univariate study, we found a statistically significant correlation between PWV and age (P = 0), between the pulse wave vel

A case of temporary metastatic pulmonary calcification in a patient with hyperparathyroidism on peritoneal dialysis.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic calcification is associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRD). Metastatic pulmonary calcification (MPC) is another rare type of ectopic calcification, and there are a few reports on MPC in dialysis patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 52-year-old woman admitted with general fatigue and appetite loss, who was on peritoneal dialysis (PD) for 7 years. Although she was initially suspected of having secondary HPT due to ESRD, we finally diagnosed ectopic HPT that was caused by a cystic mass behind her thyr

Survivin expression as an independent predictor of overall survival in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) is an incurable cancer strongly associated with asbestos exposure and characterised by poor prognosis. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the prognostic and predictive value of CD146 and survivin expression in MPeM. Diagnostic biopsies from 60 patients with MPeM were collected and analysed for CD146, survivin and Ki-67 expression using immunohistochemistry. Complete clinical and follow-up information was obtained from patients' records. CD146 was expressed in 31/60 MPeM specimens and survivin in 34/60 specimens, with both expression levels be

Primary peritoneal clear cell carcinoma. A case report and literature review.

Primary peritoneal malignant tumors are exceptional. Among them, clear cell carcinoma is extremely rare, being only thirteen cases previously reported in the literature since 1990. We report a case of a 48-year-old Caucasian woman who was treated at the University General Hospital of Alicante. She consulted because of progressive abdominal pain over the last seven months, with the initial diagnosis of renal-ureteral colic. Ultrasound and computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a 25 × 15 cm, well-defined cystic lesion with papillary projections, centrally located in the abdomen.

Grafting Islets to a Dissected Peritoneal Pouch to Improve Transplant Survival and Function.

BACKGROUND: Although the liver is the primary site for clinical islet transplantation, it poses several restrictions, especially limited tissue volume due to portal vein pressure. We evaluated the preperitoneal space as an extrahepatic islet transplant site to deliver high tissue volumes and sustain long-term graft function. METHODS: A peritoneal pouch was formed by dissecting the parietal peritoneum from the transversalis fascia of mice. Syngeneic C57BL/6 donor islets were transplanted into the peritoneal pouch of diabetic mouse recipients. Blood glucose was monitored for islet function, and

Clinical characteristics associated with the properties of gut microbiota in peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota alters in patients with end-stage renal disease, which contributes to inflammation, atherosclerosis, and results in increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The present study investigated the potential clinical factors, which influence the gut microbial structure and function in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study performed in 81 prevalent PD patients. Gut microbiota was assessed by high throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene in fecal samples. Gas chromatography was conducted to measure

Peritoneal Carcinomatosis and Its Mimics: Review of CT Findings for Differential Diagnosis.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) indicates the metastasis of a malignant neoplasm to the peritoneal surface. PC can be incidentally detected before discovery of the primary malignancy during an imaging study. There are other conditions that can mimic PC, such as pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal lymphomatosis, peritoneal malignant mesothelioma, leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata, and tuberculous peritonitis. These diseases may appear similar on computed tomography (CT), but there are some clues for the differential diagnosis. This article will describe the CT findings of PC and its mimics …

Pyridine levels in ceftazidime - peritoneal dialysis admixtures stored at body temperature.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP), ceftazidime is routinely admixed with peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions before its intraperitoneal administration. One of the major degradation products of ceftazidime is pyridine, a potentially toxic compound. Depending on the type of PD solution, ceftazidime is exposed to an environment with acidic or basic pH, and depending on the type of dosing and individual unit practices related to preparation and storage, ceftazidime can be at body temperature for 4-10 h, resulting in potentially varying rates of degra…
