The nature of the immunosuppressive effect of antithyroid drugs has been a subject of controversy. It has been claimed that these agents exert a direct effect on the immune system, although we and others have suggested that the drugs affect the thyroid cells primarily with consequent reduced thyrocyte-immunocyte signalling. Using human IgG F(ab') 2 prepared from pooled sera containing a high titer of thyroid microsomal antibody (TMAb), localization of thyroid microsomal antigen (TMAg) was studied electron microscopically in dissociated follicular cells obtained from 25 thyroids of patients with Basedow's disease. We examined the morphological effects of carbon disulfide exposure on neurons and vasculature of the visual system of macaque monkeys. Five monkeys were exposed to 256 ppm carbon disulfide (CS2) by inhalation for 6 hr a day, 5 days a week. One monkey, sacrificed immediately after exposure, had numerous axonal swellings in the distal optic tract. In 20 patients with chronic neutropenia, serum lactoferrin (S-LF) and serum myeloperoxidase (S-MPO) levels were assessed. The re-innervation of the olfactory bulb has been studied in rats in which the primary afferent axons were transected either in the peripheral nervous system, on the intracranial side of the cribriform plate, or in the central nervous system, in the nerve fibre layer of the bulb. This study presents a detailed ultrastructural examination of the human endocervix with evidence for the differentiation of subcolumnar basal cells into mucus-secreting cells and ciliated columnar cells. The measurement of CL has been demonstrated to be a useful tool for the in vitro assessment of intracellular and opsonophagocytic function of PMN. A study was carried out of 332 babies suffering from severe neonatal jaundice who were admitted to the General Hospital, Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. Of the 332 neonates, 51 were premature and 281 were full-term babies, 178 (110 Chinese, 58 Malay, 9 Indian and 1 European-Pakistani) had bilirubin levels of 20 mg% or higher, requiring exchange blood transfusion. Experiments were desinged to test the hypothesis that structural and chemical changes in the small intestine associated with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) alter relationships between hosts and enteric parasites. In two case of aorthochromatic anaemia refractory to treatment with granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia without significant enlargement of abdominal viscera a hypothesis of uncontrolled proliferation involving proerythroblasts is put forward on the basis of bone marrow findings. This proliferation seems to be confined to a single focus-bone marrow, without evidence of peripheral dissemination. Profound dysplastic changes of proerythroblasts are suggestive of neoplastic growth.
