OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) abuse produces another neurotoxicity which may significantly inhibit the acetylcholinesterase activity and result in severe oxidative damage and liperoxidative damage to MDMA abusers.

The antioxidant and cryoprotective efficiencies of a 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)methylenediphosphonic acid (MDPA) differ significantly for sperm cells of various species of sturgeon fish (Russian sturgeon, beluga and Stellate sturgeon). The ability of phosphorus-containing phenol MDPA to decrease the level of lipid peroxidation of sperm, beneficial effect on the activity indicators of the sperm of native sturgeon and of the defrosted one after deep freezing as well as on the fertility of sperm cells was shown.

A meta-dehydrogenative alkylation of arenes with cyclic ethers, ketones, and esters catalyzed by ruthenium is achieved in the presence of a di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) oxidant. Interestingly, when quinoline and isoquinoline are employed as the directing group, or a chain ether as alkylation reagent, the system produces Minisci reaction products. Mechanistic study indicates that meta-dehydrogenative alkylation is a radical process initiated by DTBP with the assistance of a CAr-Ru bond ortho/para-directing effect.

Clinical studies revealed correlation of changes in anti-oxidative system and lipid peroxidation with peritonitis phases. The assessment of anti-oxidative system was used as an additional diagnostic and prognostic criterion for the disease. Data are presented in proof of efficiency of an ozone physiological solution included in combined treatment of acute peritonitis. Ozone therapy helped to normalize functioning of the anti-oxidative defensive system and thereby decrease the incidence of severe complications and fatal cases among patients with peritonitis.

Acne is a multifaceted disorder. Its clinical presentation differs according to the age and gender of the subjects. Acne of the adolescent is a frequent disorder. Some topical and oral antibiotics have proven their efficacy. However, the risk of bacterial resistance may be a concern for the clinicians and their patients. Hence, a therapeutic strategy without antibiotics merits to be considered. Retinoids have a place of choice in this therapeutic strategy. Benzoyl peroxide and miconazole are also active and valuable agents in this therapeutic algorithm.

Nightguard vital bleaching, or NGVB, which involves the use of a 10 percent carbamide peroxide in a custom-fitted mouthguard, has been used with much success since its introduction in 1989. Normal bleaching treatment time is one to two weeks, although times may be extended to months for difficult stains. When used in a professionally supervised manner, nightguard vital bleaching is as safe as any other routinely used dental treatment.

The rice-Magnaporthe oryzae pathosystem is presented as a host-pathogen ferroptosis model. Multi-omics insights connect ferroptosis to several cellular processes, such as iron homeostasis, reactive oxygen species (ROS)/redox imbalance, and polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing phospholipid (PUFA-PL) peroxidation, under multiple regulators in rice and M. oryzae, respectively. A simple protocol for the three-component intermolecular alkylesterification of styrenes with toluenes and peroxyesters using a copper catalyst is described. A variety of ester-containing complex compounds were synthesized with excellent functional group tolerance and step efficiency. Employing the combination of carboxylic acids and di- tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) oxidant instead of peroxyesters also gave similar results. In this transformation, aromatic acids, aliphatic acids, and amino acids were suitable substrates.

The neuroleptic drug levomepromazine (1, previously known as methotrimeprazine) is photolabile under UV-A and UV-B light in aerobic conditions. Irradiation of a methanol solution of this drug produces one photoproduct, resulting from the oxidation of 1 to its sulfoxide parent. It is demonstrated that photodegradation occurs via type II mechanism involving irreversible trapping of self-photogenerated singlet molecular oxygen. 1 shows a photohemolytic effect on human erythrocytes and photoinducers lipid peroxidation.

Commonly seen in liquidators of the effects of the Chernobyl accident are affections of the liver (chronic hepatitis) and bile tract (chronic calculous cholecystitis) accompanied by IHD. The above patients demonstrate enhancement of the antioxidant defence in the blood with the values for free-radical peroxidation remaining unchanged. Absolute values for blood content of LTV4 in chronic active hepatitis were found out to be low, which fact suggests that such patients need to be kept under periodic oncological surveillance.
