Thyroid dysfunction in Hashimoto's thyroiditis: a pilot study on the putative role of miR-29a and TGFβ1.

PURPOSE: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is one of the most common causes of thyroid dysfunction in iodine sufficient worldwide areas, but its molecular mechanisms are not completely understood. To this regard, this study aimed to assess serum levels of miRNA-29a (miR-29a) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) in HT patients with different patterns of thyroid function. METHODS: A total of 29 HT patients, with a median age of 52 years (21-68) were included. Of these, 13 had normal thyroid function (Eu-HT); 8 had non-treated hypothyroidism (Hypo-HT); 8 had hypothyroidism on replacement the

Evaluation of the multimodal DELTA therapy for adolescents with substance use disorders: an exploratory pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: In order to address the lack of manualized treatment programs for adolescents with substance use disorders (SUDs), we developed a manualized group intervention (DELTA). DELTA focusses on substance use reduction and abstinence as well as alleviation of SUD symptoms via additional modules for co-occurring disorders. The goal of this exploratory trial was to assess if DELTA can be conducted in adolescent SUD patients and if participation is related to reductions in substance use, SUD-related problems, and further psychopathologies. METHOD: We recruited adolescents at a psychiatric ou

Couple-Focused Smartphone Intervention to Reduce Problem Drinking: Pilot Randomized Control Trial.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is among the most pervasive substance use disorders in the United States, with a lifetime prevalence of 30%. Recommended treatment options include evidence-based behavioral interventions; smartphone-based interventions confer a number of benefits such as portability, continuous access, and stigma avoidance; and research suggests that interventions involving couples may outperform those for patients only. In this context, a behavioral intervention delivered to couples through smartphones may serve as an effective adjunct to alcohol use disorder treatment. OBJEC

Acute cardiovascular and muscular response to rowing ergometer exercise in artificial gravity - a pilot trial.

Prolonged immobilization and spaceflight cause cardiovascular and musculoskeletal deconditioning. Combining artificial gravity through short-arm centrifugation with rowing exercise may serve as a countermeasure. We aimed to compare the tolerability, muscle force production, cardiovascular response, and power output of rowing on a short-arm centrifuge and under terrestrial gravity. Twelve rowing athletes (4 women, aged 27.2 ± 7.4 years, height 179 ± 0.1 cm, mass 73.7 ± 9.4 kg) participated in two rowing sessions, spaced at least six weeks apart. One session used a short-arm centrifuge with +0.5

Pharmacokinetics of Envarsus in pediatric kidney transplant recipients - phase 1 pilot conversion study.

INTRODUCTION: Tacrolimus is the standard immunosuppressant for pediatric kidney transplants and is routinely administered twice daily (BD-tac). Envarsus (LCP-tac), an extended-release formulation, is approved for adults but not for pediatric patients. METHODS: We conducted a pilot open-label phase 1 study in stable pediatric kidney transplant recipients (age < 18 at the time of study). Our primary objective was to compare the pharmacokinetics (Pk) of LCP-tac versus BD-tac. We conducted two 24-h Pk studies: pre-conversion (BD-tac) and 4 weeks post-conversion to LCP-tac. Patients were followed

PlanoUp!: A pilot program for the identification and treatment of depression for youth in low-income secondary schools.

Rates of depression in youth are continuing to increase at a steady rate, yet these youth often do not receive mental health services (Bertha & Balázs, 2013; Thomas et al., 2011). Schools are an ideal setting to connect youth to mental health services; however, many barriers exist with respect to schools having adequate resources and access to the appropriate levels of services (Duong et al., 2021; Owens & Peltier, 2002). Schools may collaborate with local community providers with available resources to address these gaps. The current article describes the pilot of a school-based mental health

De-escalation from anti-CD20 to cladribine tablets in multiple sclerosis: A pilot study.

Prolonged treatment with anti-CD20 antibodies can lead to hypogammaglobulinemia and increased infection risk in multiple sclerosis (MS). We investigated switch from anti-CD20 to cladribine as a strategy to prevent immunoglobulin reduction while preserving efficacy. We prospectively analysed serum IgG, IgM, neurofilament light (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in 44 patients, 14 who were switched from anti-CD20 to cladribine and 30 continuing anti-CD20. Over 1 year, serum IgG, IgM, NfL and GFAP remained stable after switch and similar to patients continuing anti-CD20. More than 9

A Disposable Diaper Collection Project in Langa, Cape Town, South Africa: A Pilot Study.

In developing countries, there is currently no established waste management plan that includes resource recovery from used disposable diapers (DDs) apart from incineration and landfilling. In low-income areas with limited storage space, the complex composition and odour of used DDs make it impossible to manage properly if not supported by effective waste management systems. In the absence of effective waste management, DDs are dumped in open spaces, burned or buried. These actions pose threats to the safety and health of humans, animals and the environment. Separation and collection of DDs are

Impacts of Wearable Resistance Placement on Running Efficiency Assessed by Wearable Sensors: A Pilot Study.

Wearable resistance training is widely applied to enhance running performance, but how different placements of wearable resistance across various body parts influence running efficiency remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the impacts of wearable resistance placement on running efficiency by comparing five running conditions: no load, and an additional 10% load of individual body mass on the trunk, forearms, lower legs, and a combination of these areas. Running efficiency was assessed through biomechanical (spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic) variables using acceleration-based wear

Relationship Between Force-Velocity Characteristics and Sprint Performance in Elite Sprinters: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Sprinting is a type of running that consists of producing a short and intense effort in order to perform maximal speed in a short period of time. Sprinting is widely investigated because of the multiple and complex mechanisms involved. Sprint studies are now focusing on how to improve performance by focusing their analyses on the mechanic variables. The hamstrings are part of the most important muscle groups during sprinting because of their role of stabilization and propulsion, but they must be able to produce the maximum strength during a short moment, this ability is characteriz

How Do Age-Group Triathlon Coaches Manage Training Load? A Pilot Study.

Multidisciplinary sports like triathlons require combining training for three different sports, and it is unclear how triathlon coaches manage this. During a 10-week period, we provided four age-group triathlon coaches with summary reports of the training completed by their athletes (n = 10) in the previous week. Coaches were then asked if the information provided to them was used to inform training prescription for the following week. The information provided to coaches included relative acute training load (rATL) and training stress scores (TSSs). Weekly fluctuations in rATL of >10% (spikes)

Emotional preparedness for human body donor dissection in premedical education: A pilot program evaluation.

Dissection of bodies provided by donors continues to be utilized as a critical part of medical education. It also represents a rite of passage that socializes students to prepare them for the stress that comes with working in a clinical environment as a medical professional. Just as proper guidance in acquiring technical skills is critical in anatomy education, there is an important need for proper emotional guidance throughout the human dissection process. A pilot curriculum was developed by an interdisciplinary faculty team to emotionally prepare students for their first visit to the anatomy

Gel immersion endoscopic mucosal resection for small gastric neoplastic lesions: A pilot study.

Gastric endoscopic mucosal resection is challenging due to the slippery mucosa, abundant blood vessels, and the presence of mucus. We developed gel immersion endoscopy to secure the visual field, even in a blood-filled gastrointestinal lumen in 2016. Clear gel with appropriate viscosity, instead of water, can prevent rapid mixture with blood and facilitate identification of the culprit vessel. We further optimized the gel for endoscopic treatment, and the resultant product, Viscoclear (Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory) was first released in Japan in 2020. The viscosity of this gel has been optimi
