BACKGROUND: The relationship between concurrent or previous postnatal pain and depressive symptoms remains controversial. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has used validated measures and multiple scales to evaluate perineal pain, or examined its relationship with depressive symptoms during the postpartum period.

To evaluate the frequency of yeast, bacteria or protozoa in pregnant women and to correlate the possible associations of these microorganisms and their relationships with vulvovaginitis (VV) and cervicitis. Vaginal specimens were collected and prepared for smears in microscope slides for the evaluation of yeast, Trichomonas vaginalis and bacteria. Samples were cultured in specific culture medium. Cervical specimens were used to investigate the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma spp. and Mycoplasma hominis. We enrolled 210 pregnant women, aged 10-42 years old.

BACKGROUND: Bacteriological confirmation of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is problematic, and rarely guides initial clinical management. A uniform TBM case definition has been proposed for research purposes.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients aged 3 months to 13 years with meningitis confirmed using cerebrospinal fluid analysis at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa.
