ONWARD: A one health, pan-European multidisciplinary network advancing surveillance, research, clinical management and control of zoonotic hepeviruses.

Zoonotic hepeviruses, particularly hepatitis E virus (HEV, species Paslahepevirus balayani) represent a major yet underestimated public health challenge in Europe. Despite being the leading cause of acute viral hepatitis, surveillance, diagnostic practices and prevention strategies remain heterogeneous across EU/EEA countries, limiting comparability and hindering accurate burden estimates. Underdiagnosis is further compounded by extrahepatic manifestations and the growing impact of chronic HEV infection in immunocompromised patients. At the human-animal-environment interface, zoonotic HEV circ

Hospital solid waste management strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections from occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and improve occupational safety.

Improving occupational safety and public health is crucial to reducing nosocomial infections in healthcare workers due to the ongoing deficiencies in solid waste management in private clinics. For this reason, it is necessary to implement appropriate solid waste management practices to mitigate risks for clinical staff, patients, and the environment. This research focused on reducing the risk of nosocomial infections in healthcare workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens. It was carried out at the private clinic and concentrated on properly managing hospital solid waste, with special attention

The Cultural Tapestry of Tobacco Use in India: A Narrative Review.

In India, both smoking and nonsmoking forms of tobacco are deeply ingrained in cultural and regional customs. Being the largest producer and consumer of tobacco, India witnesses a wide variety of cigarettes, bidis, hookah, chilam, ghutka, pan masala, khaini, and betel quid with tobacco. The consumption of these products is based on sociocultural notions with variations across education, gender, and geography. Historically, smoking is linked with masculinity and authority, especially in rural areas. At the same time, female tobacco use is prevalent in neighboring countries like Bangladesh despi

Intertwined paths: exploring the link between oral diseases and eating disorders. A comprehensive narrative review.

Eating disorders (ED) are psychiatric conditions with profound impacts on physical health, emotional well-being and quality of life. They are associated with reduced employment participation and increased healthcare costs, representing a significant public health concern. Major ED, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and other specified feeding and eating disorders, are closely linked to oral health complications, which serve as both diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets in ED management. This narrative review explores twenty-two studies, organised around tr

Environmental health factors influencing dengue: a systematic review with thematic categorization.

Environmental conditions significantly influence dengue fever transmission by affecting Aedes mosquito breeding. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize environmental health factors associated with dengue risk. A comprehensive search across multiple databases yielded 64 studies conducted in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings. Data were extracted and categorized thematically, and risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Checklists, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and ROBINS-I tool, depending on study design. Eight key environmental health factors were identified: water storage practic

Raising the Jewish nation: prescriptions of modern motherhood in folksgeszunt to Jews in interwar Eastern Europe.

The Society for the Preservation of the Health of the Jewish Population (OZE) was an organisation dedicated to providing medical aid to Eastern European Jews ravaged by war, revolution, poverty and disease during and after World War I. The OZE's top priority was addressing the health needs of Jewish children and teaching mothers how to 'properly' raise their infants, as children were believed to be the backbone and future of the Jewish nation. Analysing the OZE's public-facing newspaper Folksgezunt (People's Health), this paper examines how the OZE used reigning ideas in the Western European a

Addressing the risk of monkeypox exposure during gastrointestinal endoscopy.

The current monkeypox virus (MPV) outbreak is now a global health concern. MPV, a zoonotic double-stranded DNA virus, may be transmitted from human to human or by contaminated surfaces. Understanding the clinical characteristics and risks of MPV transmission are important, especially for health care workers, who may unknowingly encounter the virus while fulfilling their clinical responsibilities. The World Health Organization has recognized this orthopoxvirus outbreak as a public health emergency and the knowledge gaps regarding MPV's transmission are likely to have contributed to its spread.

Addressing inequities in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality: research and policy recommendations.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest global public health crisis since the 1918 influenza outbreak. As of early June, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 6.3 million people worldwide and more than 1.9 million in the United States (US). The total number of recorded deaths due to COVID-19 are growing at an alarming rate globally (³383,000) and nationally (³109,000) Evidence is mounting regarding the heavier burden of COVID-19 infection, morbidity, and mortality on the underserved populations in the US. This commentary focuses on this global health pandemic and how mitigation of the vir

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) are well established; nevertheless, public attitude remains stigmatic. To date, few studies have been published that examine the attitudes and practical knowledge of medical staff with regards to ECT. Moreover, the attitudes of different parts of mental health staff still need to be explored. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards ECT of mental health staff in different disciplines. METHODS: A multi-group comparative study used questionnaires translated from several similar studies; 120 que

Identifying Health Experiences of Domestically Sex-Trafficked Women in the USA: A Qualitative Study in Rikers Island Jail.

While sex trafficking in the USA is a significant medical and public health issue, there is sparse data on the healthcare needs of and access for this population. This study was designed to identify experiences of domestically sex-trafficked women regarding healthcare access, reproductive health, and infectious diseases while trafficked. Trafficking survivors incarcerated in New York City's Rikers Island women's jail participated in audio-recorded interviews between July and September 2015. Recordings were transcribed, and a content analysis was completed to identify health-related themes. Twe

Future challenges for parasitology: vector control and 'One health' in Europe: the veterinary medicinal view on CVBDs such as tick borreliosis, rickettsiosis and canine leishmaniosis.

The medical as well as the veterinary importance of parasitic arthropods or ectoparasites in general terms, is characterized by the primary or secondary impact on the health of humans and companion animals alike. The parasitic arthropods addressed here are those ectoparasites belong to the class of insects, such as fleas and sand flies, or the subclass of acarids, such as ticks. These parasitic arthropods interact intensively with their hosts by blood feeding. Fleas, sand flies and ticks hold the vector capacity to transmit pathogens such as virus, bacteria or protozoa to cats, dogs and humans

Common pediatric dental problems.

Physicians who provide primary care for children have a unique position to provide diagnostic, triage, educational, and preventive dental care for patients. Several papers have been published regarding primary pediatricians' participation in the preventive dental health care of their patients. One publication, a survey of physicians in Alabama focusing on physicians' overall awareness of dental issues, concluded that most physicians believe they have a role in the oral health of their patients, yet most were not aware of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendations. Most physi

Issues in financing dental care for the elderly.

The elderly make up an increasingly larger segment of the patient population in dental practices. This article reviews recent epidemiologic, demographic, and health services research, and concludes that significant segments of the elderly are at high risk for oral disease and/or limited access to dental treatment, and consequently warrant classification as high-risk groups for policy considerations. It then proposes policy options to the dental community and public decision makers. Oral care can be viewed as having three components. Two basic components are the primary care component--which in

The geography of waiting: surveillance latency as the hidden driver of Ebola risk in East Africa.

Ebola virus disease remains a persistent public health threat in East Africa, yet preparedness strategies continue to emphasise response after outbreaks are recognised rather than the period preceding detection. This Perspective argues that surveillance latency the cumulative delay between the earliest clinically meaningful signal and organised public health action is a critical but insufficiently measured determinant of Ebola risk. Although diagnostic and reporting delays have been widely documented, they are often treated as isolated operational challenges. We introduce the concept of the ge

Establishing a Practical Approach to Sewer Monitoring for Antimicrobial Resistance Genes and Organisms at Healthcare Facilities.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of wastewater from healthcare facilities has the potential to identify the emergence of multidrug-resistance (MDR) genes of public health importance. Specifically, wastewater surveillance (WWS) can provide sentinel surveillance of novel MDR genes or organisms in healthcare facilities, helping to direct targeted prevention efforts and monitor longitudinal effects. Several knowledge gaps need to be addressed before WWS can be used routinely for MDR surveillance, including determining optimal approaches to sampling, processing, and testing wastewater. METHODS: To this en

"We Have a Moral Commitment to the Community to Sustain It": Exploring Determinants of Strategy Sustainment After the HEALing Communities Study.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdoses are a pervasive public health crisis. Overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND), and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are evidence-based practices (EBPs) that can reduce opioid-related deaths. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) worked with coalitions of community partner organizations during the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention to increase OEND and MOUD access. This study aims to explore how EBP strategies, or the mechanisms by which EBPs were delivered, were sustained after the study ended. METHOD: Interviews with representatives from
