Lumbar Intervertebral Disc and Discovertebral Segment. Part 2: An Imaging Review of Pathologic Conditions With Anatomic Correlation.

The lumbar intervertebral disc is a complex anatomic structure that can be affected by a number of distinct pathologic processes. Categories of the disease include degenerative changes, subclinical or overt trauma, infectious lesions, inflammatory insults, metabolic disease, and tumors. Abnormalities affecting the intervertebral disc may assume atypical appearances or alterations may as well mimic pathologic processes related to degeneration that can be asymptomatic. Although the imaging findings of degenerative diseases of the vertebral column have been emphasized extensively, the assembly of

Abdominal splenosis mimicking peritoneal carcinomatosis of ovarian cancer.

We present the clinical case of a 53-year-old woman referred for suspicion of recurrence of a mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma of the ovary. Abdominal and pelvic CT revealed multiple round/oval solid nodules with similar density scattered throughout the abdomen and pelvis, the biggest ones appearing in the left hypochondrium; no normal-appearing spleen or ascites were observed. These radiological findings and the absence of significant elevation of CA 125 levels made the radiologists hypothesize that these aspects were related to abdominal splenosis. They asked the patient about previous medica

Imaging of Common Spinal Cord Diseases.

Spinal cord evaluation is an integral part of spine assessment, and its reliable imaging work-up is mandatory because even localized lesions may produce serious effects with potentially irreversible sequelae. Spinal cord alterations are found both incidentally during spine evaluation in otherwise neurologically asymptomatic patients or during neurologic/neuroradiologic assessment in myelopathic patients. Myelopathy (an umbrella term for any neurologic deficit that refers to spinal cord impairment) can be caused by intrinsic lesions or extrinsic mechanical compression, and its etiology may be b

State of the Art: Lung Cancer Staging Using Updated Imaging Modalities.

Lung cancer is among the most common mortality causes worldwide. This scientific article is a comprehensive review of current knowledge regarding screening, subtyping, imaging, staging, and management of treatment response for lung cancer. The traditional imaging modality for screening and initial lung cancer diagnosis is computed tomography (CT). Recently, a dual-energy CT was proven to enhance the categorization of variable pulmonary lesions. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends usage of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) in concert with CT to pr

Morphological, embryological, and clinical implications of the bi-carotid trunk, aberrant right subclavian artery, and bilateral linguofacial trunk.

A female cadaver fixated with 10% formalin solution was dissected during a routine undergraduate anatomy class. It was found that both the right and left carotid arteries arose from a bi-carotid trunk as the first branch of the aortic arch. The bi-carotid trunk was followed by the left subclavian artery. The aberrant right subclavian artery (the last branch) had a retro-oesophageal course. These variations were associated with the linguofacial trunk bilaterally. The group of variant anatomy of vessels encompassing the bi-carotid trunk, aberrant right subclavian artery, and the linguofacial tru

Classification of Multiclass Histopathological Breast Images Using Residual Deep Learning.

Pathologists need a lot of clinical experience and time to do the histopathological investigation. AI may play a significant role in supporting pathologists and resulting in more accurate and efficient histopathological diagnoses. Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in women worldwide. Breast cancer may be detected and diagnosed using imaging methods such as histopathological images. Since various tissues make up the breast, there is a wide range of textural intensity, making abnormality detection difficult. As a result, there is an urgent need to improve computer-assisted syste

Morphologic Variation of Liver Associated With Hourglass Stomach: Case Report and Literature Review.

Ectopic liver tissue is a rare developmental abnormality, and its association with hourglass constriction of the stomach is undocumented to date. This case report describes the discovery of morphologic variations in the liver of an adult female cadaver during routine dissection. The variations include a small, pedunculated, club-shaped accessory lobe covered by a glistening fibrous capsule connecting it to the gallbladder wall, with vessels radiating into the lobe. Two additional lobes were present, one attached to the right upper margin of the caudate lobe, overlapping the inferior vena cava,

Update: Posttreatment Imaging of the Knee after Cartilage Repair.

Focal cartilage lesions are common pathologies at the knee joint that are considered important risk factors for the premature development of osteoarthritis. A wide range of surgical options, including but not limited to marrow stimulation, osteochondral auto- and allografting, and autologous chondrocyte implantation, allows for targeted treatment of focal cartilage defects. Arthroscopy is the standard of reference for the assessment of cartilage integrity and quality before and after repair. However, deep cartilage layers, intrachondral composition, and the subchondral bone are only partially

Resurgence of intestinal ascariasis among adults: radiological diagnosis and clinical implications.

To report the radiological features of intestinal ascariasis and to review the clinical implications of this re-emerging disease for adult population of the USA. This retrospective observational study involved 12 adult patients, whose radiological examinations disclosed unsuspected presence of ascaris in their intestinal tract. They were evaluated by computed tomography of the abdomen with oral contrast, small bowel series with barium, and magnetic resonance enterography. This series included 7 men and 5 women, who ranged in age from 19 to 72 years (mean age 48 years). The typical configuratio

Spectrum of CT findings in amebic colitis.

Entamoeba histolytica is distributed throughout the world. Invasive amebiasis affects millions of people globally, and the associated complications cause 40,000-100,000 deaths per year. In countries where fecal-oral transmission is unusual, amebic colitis is not common, and the infection may be seen in travelers to and emigrants from endemic areas. Without adequate treatment, amebic colitis may develop into fulminant and become rapidly fatal. With the current increase in global mobility, amebic colitis should be suspected even in patients not in the endemic areas. CT plays an important role in

Spectrum of chest CT manifestations of coronavirus disease (COVID-19): A pictorial essay.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family of betacoronaviruses. Chest computed tomography (CT) has helped us in understanding this new disease. Typical CT features of COVID-19 pneumonia are ground-glass opacities (GGO), crazy paving pattern and GGO with superimposed consolidation with a basal, posterior and peripheral lung predilection. Less commonly bronchial wall thickening, bronchial dilatation and pleural thickening are seen. Presence

Imaging in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis and current limitations.

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis represents a heterogenous spectrum of disorders characterised by an abnormal and permanent dilatation of the bronchial tree associated with respiratory symptoms. To date, diagnosis relies on computed tomography (CT) evidence of dilated airways. Nevertheless, definite radiological criteria and standardised CT protocols are still to be defined. Although largely used, current radiological scoring systems have shown substantial drawbacks, mostly failing to correlate morphological abnormalities with clinical and prognostic data. In limited cases, bronchiectasis mo

Artificial intelligence for detection and characterization of pulmonary nodules in lung cancer CT screening: ready for practice?

Lung cancer computed tomography (CT) screening trials using low-dose CT have repeatedly demonstrated a reduction in the number of lung cancer deaths in the screening group compared to a control group. With various countries currently considering the implementation of lung cancer screening, recurring discussion points are, among others, the potentially high false positive rates, cost-effectiveness, and the availability of radiologists for scan interpretation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to increase the efficiency of lung cancer screening. We discuss the performance levels of

Interpretation of osteoporotic vertebral deformity on frontal view radiographs of the chest and abdomen: a pictorial review.

Osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) has high prevalence in the elderly population. It affects at least one-fourth of all postmenopausal women and is commonly seen among women approximately one decade after menopause. A vertebral fracture, after minor trauma, is a hallmark of osteoporosis. Many fractures and associated complications, including secondary fractures and mortality, can be prevented by routine osteoporosis screening in older people and timely treatment initiation in at-risk individuals. Depending on the technical condition of the radiographs, a substantial portion of moderate to s
