Ocular manifestations of hemoglobin S-C disease.

Three patients with hemoglobin S-C disease, all with ocular lesions, were studied and contrasted with four other patients who had predominantly either hemoglobin S or C but no ocular lesions. Attention is drawn to the diagnostic value of hemoglobin electrophoresis in such cases. With this technique a diagnosis of hemoglobin S-C disease was made in a patient previously thought to the "Eales' disease"; one sister was found to have asymptomatic hemoglobin S-C disease and unsuspected early ocular lesions. The number of persons in Canada with hemoglobinopathies is increasing. Awareness of an associ

Optic disc parameters and choroidal vascular index as potential risk indicators in non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although previous research has explored the involvement of the choroid in the pathogenesis of non- arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), the relationship between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings and choroidal features remains unclear. An understanding of this relationship may help clarify the vascular mechanisms underlying this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between OCTA and choroidal parameters in patients with NAION during the post-acute phase, after the resolution of optic disc oedema. METHODS: This r

VEGF Production Is Regulated by the AKT/ERK1/2 Signaling Pathway and Controls the Proliferation of Toxoplasma gondii in ARPE-19 Cells.

The retina is the primary site of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the eye, and choroidal neovascularization in ocular toxoplasmosis is one of the most important causes of visual impairment. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the key regulators of blood vessel development, however, little is known about the mechanisms of T. gondii-induced VEGF production in ocular toxoplasmosis. Here, we investigate the effect of T. gondii on VEGF production regulation in human retinal pigment epithelium ARPE-19 cells and attempted to unveil the underlying mechanism of this event by focusing on

Alterations in macular microvasculature in chronic hepatitis B patients measured by optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) affects approximately 250 million people worldwide and can lead to extrahepatic manifestations, including ocular disorders. However, whether macular microvascular alterations occur in non-cirrhotic CHB patients remains unexplored. This study aimed to quantify superficial macular microvascular density in non-cirrhotic CHB patients utilizing optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to explore its correlation with clinical characteristics, including liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and virological markers. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectio

Patients with Ocular Ischaemic Events Have Greater Cerebral White Matter Hyperintensity Volume than Asymptomatic Patients Undergoing Carotid Revascularisation.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid artery stenosis may cause ocular ischaemic events (OIE) due to thrombo-embolic events or reduced perfusion to the ophthalmic arteries. While these patients have a lower risk of recurrent ipsilateral ischaemic events compared with patients with hemispheric events, the potential relationship between OIE and cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), as a manifestation of small vessel disease, has not been explored. This study investigated the presence of WMHs in patients with OIE compared with asymptomatic patients with carotid artery stenosis scheduled for carotid revascu

Association between retinal AV ratio and coronary artery disease severity in acute coronary syndrome and chronic coronary syndrome patients: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Early, non-invasive detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) is a significant challenge. Given the anatomical and pathophysiological parallels between retinal and coronary microvasculature, retinal arteriovenous (AV) ratio may serve as a surrogate marker of CAD. This study aimed to evaluate correlation between retinal AV ratio and CAD severity as assessed by SYNTAX score in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and chronic coronary syndrome (CCS), using artificial intelligence (AI)-based retinal image analysis. METHODS: In this prospective study, 332 participants were enro

Retinal hemoperfusion and vascular endothelial function after pancreatic transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmological assessment of the retinal circulation and the level of VEGF-A is currently considered a non-invasive and safe diagnostic tool to assess the peripheral microcirculation. Currently, there are few studies on the evaluation of retinal haemodynamics in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus after pancreas transplantation, and we did not find any studies on the evaluation of VEGF-A levels in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 79 patients (158 eyes) with type 1 diabetes mellitus and end-stage diabetic nephropathy participated in the study. Patients were divided into
