Port-site recurrence represents a severe complication in the case of incidental gallbladder cancer (ICG) discovered after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and is reported to occur in 17% of cases. For this reason port-sites excision is an essential surgical step during the second operation, which includes liver resection (segments 4b and 5) and lymph node dissection (hepatic pedicle and retroduodeno-pancreatic region). We report here on a patient with recurrent sigmoid colon carcinoma. Postmortem examination revealed a fist-sized tumor in the retroperitoneum, invasive to the left ureter obstructing its lumen causing hydronephrosis of the ipsilateral kidney. Histological examination of the kidney showed multiple foci of adenocarcinoma cells on the pelvic surface. Invasion into the underlying tissue was not observed, and there was no tumor in the submucosal tissue of the pelvis or in the parenchyma of the left kidney. Cancer cells on the renal pelvic mucosa showed strong immunoreactivities for CEA and CA 19-9.

Vaccination with a vegetal protein--vicilin--was performed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antitissue autoantibodies (vessel, myocardium, striated muscle, liver, lung, kidney) were determined before and after vaccination. Intraoperative pulmonary tumor embolism occurred during right hepatectomy for primary hepatic carcinoma. The tumor embolus produced abrupt arterial hypotension, tachycardia, an increased central venous pressure, intense cyanosis, followed by cardiac arrest. Pulmonary tumor embolism resulting from hepatic tumors is rare and has not been reported to have occurred intraoperatively. When tumor thrombosis has been detected or suspected, hepatic vascular exclusion should be considered for the prevention of intraoperative embolism.

We report four Clostridium-affiliated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) recovered from a psychrotolerant enrichment culture capable of Fe(III) reduction at 4°C, seeded from Antarctic penguin-impacted soil. Septic cortical osteitis is a rare but distinct type of bone infection that is characterized as a hematogenously seeded infection predominantly or exclusively limited to the cortex. Diagnosis is difficult and often delayed. Combination of clinical and laboratory findings together with the typical radiological findings consisting of vertically orientated cortical osteolysis, the 'cortical split sign' and the predominantly cortical disruption at the periosteal side of the cortex may lead to the correct diagnosis.

Eight patients with meningeal seeding by carcinoma or lymphomas were treated with intravenous (i.v.) and/or intrathecal (i.th.) Methotrexate (MTX). Seven patients received additional craniospinal irradiation and in all seven a fatal encephalopathy developed. On the bases of clinical and morphological findings we identified an acute and a delayed form of encephalopathy and concluded that the concurrent administration of Methotrexate and of craniospinal irradiation increases considerably the risk of brain damage.
