Outcomes of hematopoietic SCT recipients with rhinovirus infection: a matched, case-control study.

The impact of rhinovirus in hematopoietic SCT (HSCT) recipients is not well defined. A retrospective, matched, case-control study of HSCT recipients with rhinovirus was conducted between 2009 and 2011. Controls were matched for timing relative to transplant, malignancy, and stem cell source. There were 47 cases and 94 controls. The cases and controls did not differ with respect to age, gender, ethnicity, donor source, malignancy, conditioning regimen, immunosuppression, antimicrobial prophylaxis or significant comorbidities. There were no differences in need for intensive care unit care, 100 d

An update on malignant tumor-related stiff person syndrome spectrum disorders: clinical mechanism, treatment, and outcomes.

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare central nervous system disorder associated with malignancies. In this review, we retrieved information from PubMed, up until August 2023, using various search terms and their combinations, including SPS, stiff person syndrome spectrum disorders (SPSSDs), paraneoplastic, cancer, and malignant tumor. Data from peer-reviewed journals printed in English were organized to explain the possible relationships between different carcinomas and SPSSD subtypes, as well as related autoantigens. From literature searching, it was revealed that breast cancer was the most

How does academia respond to the burden of infectious and parasitic disease?

BackgroundAcademic research is one of the main avenues through which humans can fight the threat of infectious diseases. However, there have been concerns regarding whether the academic system has provided sufficient efforts to fight infectious diseases we potentially face. Answering these questions could contribute to evidence-based recommendations for setting research priorities and third-mission policies.MethodsWith a focus on one of the most common categories of communicable diseases, infectious and parasitic diseases (IPDs), we searched Web of Science for articles and reviews relevant to

Adherence to Patient-Reported Symptom Monitoring and Subsequent Clinical Interventions for Patients With Multiple Myeloma in Outpatient Care: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of software to monitor patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can improve outcomes for patients with cancer receiving anticancer therapy; however, evidence from applications used in routine clinical practice is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate adherence to and patient perceptions of a weekly, web-based PROM symptom monitoring program in routine clinical practice for patients with Multiple Myeloma. Moreover, we aimed to capture how clinical alerts prompted by the system influenced clinical care. METHODS: We conducted a single-center longitudinal observational

Physical Activity and Quality of Life in Cancer Survivors: A Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Research.

Qualitative research on the impact of physical activity on quality of life (QoL) in adults diagnosed with cancer is accumulating. However, the field of physical activity and cancer survivorship lack a synthesis of this research to reliably understand the implications for future research and practice. The aim of this meta-synthesis was to identify, appraise, and synthesize qualitative research on cancer survivors' perspectives of the impact of physical activity on their QoL. Seven electronic databases were searched for original studies published in English, and reference lists of relevant studi

The role of complementary and alternative methods in the treatment of pain in patients with cancer - current evidence and clinical practice: a narrative review.

IntroductionPain related to cancer, despite the numerous treatment options available, is still a challenge in contemporary pain medicine. The unsatisfactory treatment of cancer pain is one of the main reasons why patients seek complementary and alternative methods (CAM) and a more integrative/holistic approach to pain management. The popularity of CAM forces healthcare professionals to provide patients with current and evidence-based information on the effectiveness and safety of CAM. The aim of the paper is to present current evidence and limitations regarding CAM commonly used in the pain ma

Intensive care of the cancer patient: recent achievements and remaining challenges.

A few decades have passed since intensive care unit (ICU) beds have been available for critically ill patients with cancer. Although the initial reports showed dismal prognosis, recent data suggest that an increased number of patients with solid and hematological malignancies benefit from intensive care support, with dramatically decreased mortality rates. Advances in the management of the underlying malignancies and support of organ dysfunctions have led to survival gains in patients with life-threatening complications from the malignancy itself, as well as infectious and toxic adverse effect

Early Palliative Care in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

BackgroundSeveral novel targeted therapies seem to improve the outcome of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Nonetheless, the 5-year survival rate remains below 40%, and the trajectory of the disease remains physically and emotionally challenging, with little time to make relevant decisions. For patients with advanced solid tumors, the integration of early palliative care (EPC) with standard oncologic care a few weeks after diagnosis has demonstrated several benefits. However, this model is underutilized in patients with hematologic malignancies.MethodsIn this article, we analyze the palli

Case report: Light-chain amyloidosis responsive to selinexor in combination with daratumumab and dexamethasone (SDd) therapy.

The outcome of AL amyloidosis remains poor, particularly in patients with advanced organ involvement which takes long time to recovery. We conducted an observational study of two patients with AL amyloidosis treated with SDd regimen. Both patients successfully achieved significant hematological and organ responses without severe adverse events, and the time to organ response was remarkably shorter than previously reported. Notably, an over 15% reduction in interventricular septal thickness (IVST) was observed in patient#2 within 6 months. Up to now, SDd therapy has not been previously reported

How can Cytokine-induced killer cells overcome CAR-T cell limits.

The successful treatment of patients affected by B-cell malignancies with Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T cells represented a breakthrough in the field of adoptive cell therapy (ACT). However, CAR-T therapy is not an option for every patient, and several needs remain unmet. In particular, the production of CAR-T cells is expensive, labor-intensive and logistically challenging; additionally, the toxicities deriving from CAR-T cells infusion, such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), have been documented extensively. Alternative

Treatment of early-stage diabetic nephropathy with Siddha drug Sirupeelai Kudineer: A case series.

Diabetic Nephropathy is one of the major microvascular complications of Diabetes Mellitus, which can be detected in the earlier stage by investigating urinary microalbumin excretion levels and estimating ACR and GFR. Early treatment can delay or prevent the progression of diabetic Nephropathy. Monoherbal Siddha formulation Sirupeelai Kudineer indicated for the complications of Diabetes Mellitus is selected for this Case study. The efficiency of the drug was assessed by measuring the change in renal function throughout the treatment period and the KD QOL assessment. Four patients presented with

Frailty and the risk of ICU-acquired infections in a randomised trial: a protocol and statistical analysis plan.

IntroductionDysregulated immunity may account for an increased risk of infection and other adverse outcomes among frail hospitalised persons. The primary objective of this study is to examine whether baseline frailty is associated with the risk of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) or other intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired infections among invasively ventilated adults. Additional objectives are to examine the relationship between frailty and hospital length of stay, discharge to a long-term care facility and vital status. We hypothesise that persons with frailty compared with o
