Exploring determinants of fear of cancer recurrence in postoperative colorectal cancer patients: a random forest model approach.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is common in China, and many postoperative patients experience fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), which negatively affects mental health and quality of life. Predictors of FCR remain underexplored, and traditional regression may overlook complex interactions, whereas random forest (RF) modeling allows robust variable selection. PURPOSE: To assess FCR prevalence and identify associated factors using a RF model. METHODS: Between November 2023 and May 2024, 314 postoperative colorectal cancer patients were enrolled at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Da

Intimate Partner Violence and Well-Being Among Indigenous Women: The Impact of Social Reactions on Trauma and Mental Health.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health crisis, defined by physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former partner. Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by IPV due to the overlapping effects of colonization, historical trauma, systemic inequality, and barriers to support. These experiences can contribute to a range of adverse mental health outcomes. Importantly, how others respond to survivors' disclosures can shape their recovery and psychological well-being. This study examined the relationship between social reactions to IPV disclosure and men

How Social Environment Shapes Pre-Death Grief Experiences in Dementia Caregiving: A Qualitative Study.

Caregivers of persons living with dementia experience significant losses as they witness the progressive cognitive decline and personality changes of their loved ones while managing substantial caregiving responsibilities. This results in pre-death grief, which is a multifaceted response to the losses experienced. Although pre-death grief is traditionally conceptualized as an intrapersonal and dyadic phenomenon, this study examines how social environments shape caregivers' grief experiences. Through semi-structured interviews with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore, we identified 11 distinct

Brazilian Psychiatric Association guidelines for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders, is not well recognized. In most cases, SAD follows an unremitted and chronic course, affecting individual functioning in relationships, education, and work. Due to the disorder's relevance in Brazil, guideline-based treatments adapted to the Brazilian social and economic context are needed. We conducted a systematic review assessing several treatment modalities for SAD. PubMed, Cochrane, SciELO, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched using the Medical Subject Headings social anxiety disorder and social phobia. Of the 438

Achieving pregnancy safely for HIV-serodiscordant couples: a social ecological approach.

The recognition and fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all individuals and couples affected by HIV, including HIV-serodiscordant couples, requires intervention strategies aimed at achieving safe and healthy pregnancies and preventing undesired pregnancies. Reducing risk of horizontal and vertical transmission and addressing HIV-related infertility are key components of such interventions. In this commentary, we present challenges and opportunities for achieving safe pregnancies for serodiscordant couples through a social ecological lens. At the individual lev

Structured exercise, cognitive-social engagement, and cognitive impairment-free life expectancy across four longitudinal aging cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Whether cognitive-social engagement can compensate for insufficient structured exercise in cognitive aging remains unclear. METHODS: We harmonized repeated data from four aging cohorts across Asia, North America, and Europe. Structured exercise and cognitive-social engagement were cross-classified at each wave into low-low (LL), high exercise-low engagement (HL), low exercise-high engagement (LH), and high-high (HH). Cohort-specific Cox models and multistate life tables estimated incident cognitive impairment and cognitive impairment-free life expectancy. RESULTS: Cognitive imp

Fractionation of social brain circuits in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders are developmental disorders characterized by impairments in social and communication abilities and repetitive behaviours. Converging neuroscientific evidence has suggested that the neuropathology of autism spectrum disorders is widely distributed, involving impaired connectivity throughout the brain. Here, we evaluate the hypothesis that decreased connectivity in high-functioning adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder relative to typically developing adolescents is concentrated within domain-specific circuits that are specialized for social processing. Using a n

Functional Segregation of the Human Cerebellum in Social Cognitive Tasks Revealed by TMS.

The role of the posterior cerebellum in social cognition is well established; however, it is still unclear whether different cerebellar subregions contribute to different social cognitive processes by exerting specific functions. Here, we employed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in male and female healthy humans to test the hypothesis of the existence of a medial-to-lateral gradient in the functional organization of the posterior cerebellum, according to which the phylogenetically newer cerebellar hemispheres are involved in tasks requiring higher-level social inferences whereas vermal

Medication adherence, biological and lifestyle risk factors in patients with myocardial infarction: a ten-year follow-up on socially differentiated cardiac rehabilitation.

Objective: There is strong evidence that medication adherence and lifestyle changes are essential in patients undergoing secondary cardiovascular disease prevention. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) increases medication adherence and improves lifestyle changes. Patients with cardiac diseases and a low educational level and patients with little social support are less responsive to improve medication adherence and to adapt lifestyle changes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the long-term effects of a socially differentiated CR intervention on medication adherence as well as changes in

Parental Support Buffering the Effect of Violence on Adolescents' Depression: Gender Differences.

In Mexico violence across the country has increased in recent years and has become a social problem of great importance. The continuous exposure to all types of interpersonal violence leads adolescents to cope with experiences and challenges of great risk of development deviations. Trying to find a more comprehensive understanding of violence outcomes on Mexican adolescents and its moderators, the present quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional correlation study was performed. Parental support ( vs. other sort of social support) was proposed to be a relevant moderator factor for decrea

Examining Tweet Content and Engagement of Users With Tweets About Hikikomori in Japanese: Mixed Methods Study of Social Withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Hikikomori is a form of severe social withdrawal that is particularly prevalent in Japan. Social media posts offer insight into public perceptions of mental health conditions and may also inform strategies to identify, engage, and support hard-to-reach patient populations such as individuals affected by hikikomori. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we seek to identify the types of content on Twitter related to hikikomori in the Japanese language and to assess Twitter users' engagement with that content. METHODS: We conducted a mixed methods analysis of a random sample of 4940 Japanese tw

Work-related psychosocial risk factors and risk of disability pension among employees in health and personal care: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have suggested that psychological factors at work contribute to early retirement due to disability pension in the general working population. Disability pension is a problem that shortens working careers among nursing professionals and personal care or related workers, but few researchers have focused on these occupational groups. Also, a need for studies based on measurements of specific work exposure instead of combined measures has been identified. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to study the potential influence of work-related psychosocial risk factors on the future risk o

'Pushing back': People newly diagnosed with dementia and their experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions in England.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research into people with dementia's experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic has tended to focus on vulnerabilities and negative outcomes, with the risk of reproducing a discourse in which people with dementia are positioned as passive. Informed by concepts positioning people with dementia as 'active social agents', we aimed to identify the pandemic-related challenges faced by people recently diagnosed with dementia and examine the ways in which they actively coped with, and adapted to, these challenges. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In-depth interviews with 21 people r
