Exploring an Infectious Disease Service Pathway for Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children: An Audit and Retrospective Analysis.

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) experience a high burden of infectious diseases (IDs) and are a highly vulnerable population group with significant mental, physical, social and developmental needs. However, currently in the United Kingdom, there is no framework regarding how to implement ID screening guidance for UASC, leading to a wide variation in outcomes. This project is aimed at exploring the ID pathway for UASC within a single South-East UK local authority, spanning two trusts-including one with a 'one-stop' clinic-to inform service improvement recommendations. The study was

[End-of-Life Nursing Experience Providing Care to a Father With Terminal Rectal Cancer With Dependent Children].

This report describes the end-of-life nursing experience of the author in providing care to a 44-year-old father with terminal rectal cancer with two dependent children. Diagnosed in young adulthood with rectal cancer and multiple metastases, the patient initially pursued aggressive treatment. However, rapid disease progression during the terminal stage led to disrupted family processes, role conflict, and significant caregiver role strain. The author's motivation for compiling this report stemmed from the limited research addressing end-of-life care for "parents with advanced cancer and their

Study protocol for an observational cohort study of heat stress impacts in pregnancy in The Gambia, West Africa.

Climate change has resulted in an increase in heat exposure globally. There is strong evidence that this increased heat stress is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes, especially in vulnerable populations. However, there remains poor understanding of the biological pathways and mechanisms involved in the impact of heat in pregnancy. This observational cohort study of 764 pregnant participants based in sub-Saharan Africa, a geographical region at risk of extreme heat events, aims to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes that occur in pregnancy due to heat stress. The ke

Psychopathological symptoms, personality, and epistemic stances in individuals with myocardial infarction: an empirical investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of mortality worldwide. Psychopathological symptoms play a bidirectional role in MI prognosis, both increasing cardiovascular risk and being exacerbated by cardiac events, leading to further complications. Personality impairments and disruptions in epistemic trust-the ability to assess social communications as trustworthy and relevant-strongly affect psychopathology levels and may worsen MI clinical outcomes by impeding health behaviors and treatment adherence. This is the first study examining the interplay between psychopathological s

Nationwide Assessment of Pulmonary Function Testing Practices and Safety Compliance During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) presented considerable challenges to health services, particularly for a routine assessment method, the pulmonary function tests (PFTs), which can generate aerosols and require sharing common surfaces. Despite these risks, there is a need to continue testing, especially for vulnerable patient groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted from June 1 to June 26, 2020, to assess pulmonologists’ practices regarding PFTs before and during the pandemic’s first peak in Türkiye (March 11-May 20, 2020). The survey included 30 anonymized qu

Impulsive adolescents exhibit inefficient processing and a low decision threshold when decoding facial expressions of emotions.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating psychiatric illness whose symptoms frequently emerge during adolescence. Critically, self-injury and suicide attempts in BPD are often precipitated by interpersonal discord. Initial studies in adults suggest that the interpersonal difficulties common in BPD may emerge from disrupted processing of socioemotional stimuli. Less is known about these processes in adolescents with BPD symptoms, despite substantial changes in socioemotional processing during this developmental period. METHODS: Eighty-six adolescents and young adults

Associations between prior COVID-19 infection and health metrics in elderly nursing home residents: A propensity score matched analysis.

With the changes in China's COVID-19 policies, an increasing number of people have been infected with COVID-19. Elderly residents in nursing homes, due to factors such as advanced age, are considered a vulnerable population. However, there is still a lack of research on the impact on elderly Chinese nursing home residents who have not been infected with COVID-19. Participants were 506 Chinese elderly adults. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by The Perceived Social Support from Family scale (PSS-Fa) for family support, The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) for anxiety

Mothering from the margins: lived experiences of incarcerated substance-abusing mothers and the developmental risks faced by their children in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Children of incarcerated substance-abusing mothers represent a profoundly vulnerable yet under-researched population in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Sri Lanka, the intersection of maternal addiction, incarceration and poverty poses complex threats to child health and development. This study explores the lived experiences of such mothers and the perceived risks their children face. METHODS: A qualitative, phenomenological study was conducted using 10 focus group discussions (FGDs) with 48 incarcerated mothers in Sri Lanka's largest female correctional facility. Part

Association of socioeconomic status on return to work following primary total hip arthroplasty: a Danish population-based cohort study on 9,431 patients from 2008-2018.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Return to work (RTW) following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is important for patients and society. We aimed to investigate the association between markers of socioeconomic status (SES) and RTW after primary THA, and whether the association is influenced by sex, age, and comorbidity. METHODS: Using Danish population-based registries we included 9,431 patients aged 18 to 59 years, undergoing primary THA for osteoarthritis from 2008-2018. Exposure was individual-level data on SES markers (education, income, and cohabitation). Work status information before and aft

The Role of Mental Health, Recent Trauma, and Suicidal Behavior in Officer-Involved Shootings: A Public Health Perspective.

UNLABELLED: This study uses a public health approach to identify the comorbid risk factors and protective factors that influence the likelihood of an officer-involved shooting (OIS). METHODS: We analyzed 7.5 years of hospital inpatient data obtained from the state of Texas. The OIS subjects (n = 177) were civilians who were shot during a legal intervention involving law enforcement. The control group (n = 33,539) included persons who were hospitalized due to injuries from a car accident. Logistic regression models were used to identify the predictors of an OIS incident. The data included info

AI-Augmented Prevention Science Needs Community-Engaged Prevention Science: a Framework for Greater Accountability.

With the ability to approximate human decision-making and to parse through large and complex data, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as machine learning algorithms stand to play important roles in diagnosing, treating, and preventing society's most pressing social, health, and academic challenges. However, some AI applications for these ends have resulted in biased and discriminatory outcomes, demonstrating poor accountability to the communities these technologies impact and serve. The foundational premise of this paper is that AI-augmented prevention science needs community engag

From Fear to Hope: Understanding Preparatory and Anticipatory Grief in Women with Cancer-A Public Health Approach to Integrating Screening, Compassionate Communication, and Psychological Support Strategies.

Prolonged grief disorder, also known as post-loss grief, was officially recognized in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) after years of debate within the mental health community. However, while post-loss grief gained recognition, anticipatory and preparatory grief, which occur before a loss, have remained underexplored. Preparatory grief affects individuals nearing the end of life, while anticipatory grief impacts the loved ones of those who are about to die. These grief types are particularly prevalent among women, who are more vulnerable to their emotional and psychologica
