Twenty-one children who had been diagnosed as having laryngomalacia by direct laryngoscopy in infancy were reviewed 7 to 12 years later. The natural history of the disease is documented. A wide variation in the time of onset and duration of the stridor was found and there was a high incidence of feeding difficulties. A previously reported association with mental retardation or cerebral palsy is not confirmed. 4 out of the 21 children had early speech problems.

Five patients evaluated via multi-view videofluoroscopy were found to have incongruous movements between the velum and lateral aspects of the pharyngeal walls. All five patients had velopharyngeal insufficiency resulting from either absent lateral pharyngeal wall motion in the presence of velar mobility or absent velar mobility in the presence of lateral pharyngeal wall motion. The data indicates that these valving patterns are not rare phenomena of velopharyngeal valving. Treatment by pharyngeal flap or other methods for velopharyngeal insufficiency must be suited to these peculiar valving pa

The lysine methyltransferase 2B (KMT2B) gene product is important for epigenetic modifications associated with active gene transcription in normal development and in maintaining proper neural function. Pathogenic variants in KMT2B have been associated with childhood-onset Dystonia-28 and Intellectual developmental disorder, autosomal dominant 68 (MRD 68) for cases of neurodevelopmental impairment without dystonia (DYT28; OMIM 617284 and MRD68; OMIM 619934, respectively). Since its first description in 2016, approximately one hundred KMT2B genetic variants have been reported with heterogeneous

AIM: Adolescents have a high prevalence of obesity and neurodevelopmental and mental health co-occurring conditions. This study examined the association between obesity and several co-occurring conditions - autism spectrum disorder (ASD); intellectual disability; learning disability; stuttering, stammering or other speech problems; developmental delay; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; epilepsy or seizure disorder; cerebral palsy; depression; anxiety; and Tourette Syndrome - in adolescents aged 10-17 years (n = 26 266) using 2017-2018 National Survey of Children's Health data.

To investigate the relationship between the presence of language disorder, type of epilepsy, and epileptic seizures in childhood, language levels, types of language impairment, and aetiologies were examined in 109 children, aged between 5 and 17 years, attending a national children's epilepsy assessment unit over a 4-year period. There were 70 males and 39 females. Median age was 11 years 4 months (range 5 to 18 years 9 months). In addition to neurological assessment, simultaneous video and EEG monitoring and prolonged ambulatory EEG, each child underwent a comprehensive series of multidiscipl

OBJECTIVE: Pediatricians often send adolescents with dysphonia to the otorhinolaryngologist's office to find the reason for their hoarseness. The aim of this study was to identify the main characteristics of adolescent voice and to determine which characteristic (variable of voice analysis) can distinguish normal variations of voice development from pathologic disorders.
STUDY DESIGN: On the basis of history, indirect laryngoscopy, and stroboscopy, 51 adolescents (22 boys, 29 girls) from age 10 to 17 years were divided into four subgroups: candidates for singing lessons without voice problems

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons, leading to a wide range of symptoms that significantly impact patients' quality of life. Among these, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and dysphonia (voice impairments) are particularly prevalent, affecting a majority of individuals with PD and contributing to serious health risks and social challenges.
SUMMARY: Dysphagia affects up to 80% of individuals with PD, posing risks such as aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and dehydration. These clinic

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a severe neuropsychiatric syndrome increasingly recognized in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), where symptom overlap can delay diagnosis. In pediatric populations, it is associated with significant morbidity and requires prompt intervention. Benzodiazepines and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are first-line treatments; however, access to ECT may be limited due to legal or institutional constraints. Alternative pharmacological strategies, including N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists such as amantadine, have been proposed, although evidence remains limited.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder. Traditional diagnostic methods, relying on clinical assessment and imaging, are often invasive, costly, and require specialized personnel, posing barriers to early detection. As approximately 90% of PD patients develop vocal impairments, vocal analysis emerges as a promising non-invasive diagnostic tool. However, individual deep learning models are often limited by overfitting and poor generalizability.
METHODS: This study proposes a PD classification method using spectrogram feature fusion with pre-trained convolu

BACKGROUND: Progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS) is a neurodegenerative disorder most commonly arising from a 4-repeat tauopathy that affects the programming or planning of speech, although many patients develop a Parkinson-plus syndrome. The role of neuroinflammation as a disease mechanism is unknown. We investigated the spatial pattern of neuroinflammation in PAOS using PET and evaluated whether it is associated with disease severity, presence of Parkinson-plus features, and tau PET uptake.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five PAOS patients (13 with Parkinson-plus features) and 30 controls und

This case report is the description of a devastating illness, Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) of a sixty-seven years old male patient. He presented with complaints of slurred speech, hearing impairment, generalised weakness of limbs, weakened grip to hold objects in hand, difficulty to walk with normal speed, frequent dizzy feeling while walking, severe fatigue, increased anger, heaviness of head, depression, anxiety, decreased memory and headache for 1 year. When he consulted conventional medicine, in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of brain, only 'Partial empty sella' and age related mild ce

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting children's social communication, behavioral patterns, and emotional expressions. Conventional ASD diagnoses rely heavily on subjective observational tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), whose accuracy and efficiency can be limited. In this work, we develop a portable multi-modal data acquisition platform for ASD assessment and conduct a pilot validation of its effectiveness in early screening. The system integrates EEG, ECG, speech, facial expressi

Background: Understanding the origin and natural organization of early infant vocalizations is important for predicting communication and language abilities in later years. The very frequent production of speech-like vocalizations (hereafter "protophones"), occurring largely independently of interaction, is part of this developmental process. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the gap durations (time intervals) between protophones, comparing typically developing (TD) infants and infants later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a naturalistic setting where endogenous proto

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Arboleda-Tham syndrome (ARTHS) is a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the lysine acetyltransferase 6A (KAT6A) gene, characterized by global developmental delay, severe speech impairment, craniofacial dysmorphism, and congenital heart defects (CHDs).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 14 patients with molecularly confirmed KAT6A variants evaluated at the pediatric neurology center of Seoul National University Children's Hospital between 2018 and 2024. Clinical, genetic, neuroimaging, and laboratory data w
