A large group of flavonoids was investigated for inhibitory effects on sulfo- and glucurono-conjugation of acetaminophen when added to rat cultured hepatocytes and liver subcellular preparations. The flavonoids inhibited the production of both sulfate and glucuronide conjugates in the cultured cells, with potencies that depended on the specific flavonoid. Degradation of heparan sulfate by endoglycosidic heparanase cleavage affects a variety of biological processes. Mycobacterium avium was previously shown to be dependent upon ammonia or glutamine as a nitrogen source. In an effort to assess the physiology of ammonia assimilation by M. avium, a characterization of its glutamine synthetase was performed.
