Detailed longitudinal studies of patients with X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP) may increase our understanding of the immunologic defects that contribute to the development of lymphoma and hypogammaglobulinemia in XLP. Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is the most frequent glomerular disease in childhood. However, its underlying etiology mechanism lacks thorough understanding. OBJECTIVES: The expression of the CD69 antigen on synovial fluid and peripheral blood lymphocytes was studied in 12 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), five subjects with other forms of chronic synovitis, and on the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 15 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and immune vasculitis.

Assays of lymphocyte subpopulations and function have been applied to cells from the cord blood of twenty-four infants. The results are compared with those obtained in healthy adults. T cells, assayed by spontaneous rosette formation with sheep red blood cells (E rosettes) were present in lower proportion in cord (53%) than in adult blood (65%). There was a higher proportion of lymphocytes bearing stainable immunoglobulin in cord (32%) than in adult blood (22%). This study documents the differential requirements of T4+ T helper cells in the induction of virus-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) and antibody responses during acute lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection.
