Thirty patients with clinically suspected infective endocarditis were scanned with Indium-111- or Tc-99m-HM-PAO-labeled granulocytes. The scans were correlated with the clinical course, and in 20 cases with the results from histologic examination of the valves. In six cases the scintigraphic examination gave correct positive results, in three cases false negative, in one case a false positive, and in 20 cases correct negative results. If we limit the analysis to only the histologically proven cases, our data suggest a specificity of the method of 86% and a sensitivity of about 67%.

The clinical specificity and sensitivity of imaging with 99mTc was evaluated prospectively in 104 consecutive patients admitted to the hospital for diagnostic/surgical arthroscopy. Various 117mSn (2+ and 4+) compounds in well defined oxidation states were studied in normal mice using whole body autoradiography (WBARG), tissue distribution and scintigraphy in animal models of vitamin A induced bone disease, fracture, infected fracture and ischemic muscle lesions. The extent of abnormality in early thallium-201 and gated cardiac blood pool scintigrams has been reported to be useful for predicting mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Sixty-three patients aged 21-80 yr were examined. Tc-99m glucoheptonate (Tc-GH) scintigraphy was performed in 32 patients: 26 with primary lung carcinoma; six with metastases in lung, mediastinum, and pleura from carcinomas elsewhere; eight with benign pulmonary diseases; and 23 without known pulmonary disease. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy using Tc-99m labeled radiopharmaceuticals is employed primarily for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis and for demonstration of biliary tract potency. 99Tcm-Sn pyrophosphate bone scans of 250 patients referred for skeletal metastatic survey were analysed to determine the frequency of abnormal extra-osseous localization and the various pathological causes.
