Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique based on the principle of low-coherence interferometry that captures detailed images of ocular structures. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that can lead to damage of the optic nerve and retina, which can be depicted by OCT. The purpose of this pilot study is to determine whether macular OCT can be used as a biomarker in the detection of retrochiasmal lesions of the visual pathway in MS patients. We conducted a prospective study in which we included 52 MS patients and 27 healthy controls. All participa

To reveal the macular inner retinal change linked to axonal degeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD), we performed macular optical coherence tomography scan and diffusion tensor imaging of the retrobulbar optic nerve on both eyes of 36 drug-naïve PD patients. Thicknesses of inner retinal layers were automatically measured, and correlation analysis was conducted between the retinal thickness and diffusion parameters of the optic nerve. PD patients showed thinning of the inner retinal layers compared to control data. Thicknesses of the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers were both correlate

We report a case of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy associated with udenafil. A 54-year-old male presented with an acute onset visual field defect of the right eye after udenafil use. Examination revealed a relative afferent pupillary defect and a swollen disc. Automated visual fields revealed an enlarged blind spot and a narrowed visual field. Fluorescein angiography revealed both an inferior choroidal filling delay and an inferior sector filling delay of the optic disc in the arteriovenous phase as well as diffuse leakage of the optic disc in the late phase. Optical coherent tomography re

A 6-year-old girl with visual impairment in the right eye (OD) was referred for an eye evaluation. The fundus of the OD showed a fibrotic orange endophytic lesion located adjacent to the optic disc. In retinal optical coherence tomography, a local tractional retinal detachment and choroidal neovascular membrane were observed together also with the presence of subretinal fluid. Due to the vision of the OD evolved to nonlight perception in the following exam, enucleation was performed. The pathology report was correlated with hemangioblastoma. Herein, we describe a case of a young girl with a re

While its use is still widespread within the medical retina field, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) is increasingly falling out of favour in the investigation of neuro-ophthalmological disease, with the introduction of new technologies, particularly optical coherence tomography. FFA does, however, provide useful diagnostic and prognostic information in many neuro-ophthalmological diseases including papilloedema, pseudo-papilloedema, optic neuropathies and central retinal artery occlusion to name a few. We aim to summarise the main FFA findings in each of these conditions and highlight wher

A 37-year-old woman presented with an anterior optic neuropathy related to Bartonella henselae. Twenty-nine days after symptom onset, a partial thickness macular hole developed in the involved eye. Fundus photography and optical coherence tomography confirmed the conversion to a full-thickness macular hole in 2 months. Macular hole as a complication of cat scratch disease is a rare entity, with 2 prior reported cases in children. The development of a macular hole following cat scratch disease can appear without the clinical picture of multiple white chorioretinal lesions, macular star, or vitr

IMPORTANCE: Microcystic abnormalities involving the inner nuclear layer of the retina occurs in a subset of patients with multiple sclerosis, most commonly in eyes previously affected by symptomatic optic neuritis. Acute optic neuritis is a cardinal manifestation of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). To our knowledge, microcystic inner nuclear layer abnormalities have not been investigated in NMO.
OBJECTIVE: To establish whether microcystic inner nuclear layer abnormalities occur in NMO.
DESIGN: Observational, retrospective study.
SETTING: University of California at San Francisco Multiple Scleros

Parapapillary atrophy is one of the parameters of the optic nerve head area which are assessed during the ophthalmoscopic examination particularly useful to characterize glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Optical coherence tomography evaluation provides high-resolution images of the optic nerve head and surrounding area, and can be used to study parapapillary atrophy. Different parapapillary atrophy zones were described depending on their histological features and research has been conducted to investigate the possible association between the presence and/ or size of parapapillary atrophy zones an

A 40-year-old woman with uveitic macular edema (UME) in a treated case of ocular tuberculosis (TB) is the subject of our unusual case study. She had full remission with a single intravitreal injection of triamcinolone and dexamethasone. Antiinflammatory drugs, topical steroids, and anti-tubercular therapy were used to address the patient's history of recurrent anterior and intermediate uveitis in past. When intravitreal corticosteroids were administered, the big macular cysts and related retinal thickness that were seen on the optical coherence tomography (OCT) results disappeared.

The patient is a 33-year-old female who, 11 years ago, underwent bilateral posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation due to myopia. She presented with a 2-year history of declining vision in her right eye and sought medical attention. She received femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery combined with pIOL extraction. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy both showed an inverted pIOL in the right eye. Good visual results were achieved, and there were no complications during the six-month follow-up.

A 54-year-old white man presented with a "blind spot" temporally in his left eye. Best-corrected visual acuity in the affected eye was 20/20, and Humphrey visual field revealed an enlarged blind spot. Funduscopic examination revealed subtle peripapillary pigmentary changes corresponding to a well-demarcated peripapillary region of hyperautofluorescence and hypoautofluorescence on fundus autofluorescence. Outer retinal degenerative changes were detected on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. A diagnosis of acute zonal occult outer retinopathy was made based on clinical history and ima

A 55-year-old male presented with a complaint of a painless and sudden loss of vision in the right eye. Fundus photography revealed loss of transparency and edema in the central macular region. Optical coherence tomography showed increased reflectivity and diffused swelling in the inner retinal layers. Fluorescein angiography revealed a large area of capillary non-perfusion with a pronounced hypofluorescent area with distinct borders. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a hemorrhagic macular infarction associated with marijuana and pregabalin misuse.

A 14-year-old boy presented with a presumed diagnosis of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). The neurological examination, nerve conduction study, and brain imaging results were all consistent with the diagnosis. The ophthalmologic examination was notable for a prominent myelinated nerve fiber layer extending from the disk along the major temporal arcades in both eyes. Loss of foveal depression was noted clinically and on spectral domain optical coherence tomography. This case highlights a novel finding that may aid in the diagnosis of ARSACS.
