[Classification of psychopathological conditions associated with perceptual disorders in narcolepsy].

Based on a clinical analysis of psychopathological conditions associated with perceptive disorders in patients with narcolepsy, an attempt was made of their syndromal qualification. The constituents of the syndrome distinguished (orientation disturbances, theatrical effectiveness of hallucinations with fantastic plot, participation of the patient in the capacity of an active character in the play, episodes of relatively short duration, their relation to the sleep-consciousness cycle, and so forth) permit one to specify it as oneiric.

[Isolated sleep paralysis in patients with disorders due to anxiety crisis].

The relationship between isolated paralysis and panic disorder in adults is analyzed in this study. The patients included in this work presented anxiety disorder with agoraphobia and were compared with a group of normal controls. The percentage of patients with sleep paralysis was 40% significantly higher than those encountered in the control group (20%). The existence of this syndrome do not seem to modify the clinical manifestation or severity of panic disorder.

Do diagnostic patterns exist in the sleep behaviors of normal children?

We investigated the factor structure of the Children's Sleep Behavior Scale in an unselected sample of children (N = 838), ages 6 to 12.5 years, drawn from an elementary school population. Although no factor emerged that corresponded exactly to the parasomnias, as described by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers (1979), all of the variables that loaded on Factor 1 were behaviors characteristic of the parasomnias, with the exception of recalled nightmares. Variables that were expected to load on this factor, but did not, were sleeptalking, teeth grinding, and enuresis. Enuresis was not r

[Chrono-type as a factor of shiftwork tolerance in women].

Almost all physiological and psychological functions of human beings reveal circadian variations. The parameters of those rhythms differ in various subjects dependently on their individual diurnal characteristics, named here chrono-type. The difference in phase of maximal arousal is particularly apparent so that it implies the distinction between the morning and the evening types. The comparative study of both chrono-types was done with regard to the subjective health, sleep disorders and disturbances, attitudes towards shiftwork and physical fitness as measured by indirect prediction of the m

Periodic breathing at high altitude and ventilatory responses to O2 and CO2.

To determine the relationship between periodic breathing (PB) during sleep at high altitude and ventilatory chemosensitivities, we studied nine Japanese climbers who participated in the expedition to the Kunlun Mountains (7,167 m) in China in 1986. At sea level, ventilatory response to hypoxia (HVR) by isocapnic progressive hypoxia test and to hypercapnia (HCVR) by Read's method were examined. At altitude 5,360 m, respiratory movements of the chest and abdominal wall, SaO2, ECG, and HR were monitored. Seven climbers manifested PB during sleep. There was a significant correlation between PB dur

[House effect and family contamination in sleeping sickness: interpretative trial of the phenomenon. Study of 3 Congolese foci].

A review is given of the different hypotheses concerning the concentration of trypanosomiasis cases at the house or family level: 1. Mechanical transmission by haematophagous insects. 2. Interrupted feeding of a tsetse fly with cyclic infection on different people. 3. Family biological factor. These hypotheses are used as a introduction to an epidemiological field study in three congolese foci. Whereas their distribution among village districts is random, patients are significantly aggregated at the house and/or family level. This distribution may be partly explained by the behaviour of member

Three simultaneous major sleep disorders.

A patient with complex symptomatology is described. Progress in the diagnosis of sleep disorders gradually led to successful diagnosis-based treatment.

[Characteristics of the frequency component of EEG alpha rhythm of patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia (based on spectral analysis data)].

In 20 patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia and in 10 healthy subjects the authors, using the spectral analysis, assessed the composition of the alpha-range of the baseline EEG and studied the peculiarities of the frequency components of alpha-rhythm in various states. The patients were characterized by multimodality of the baseline EEG. The patients (versus the normal subjects) presented significantly different types of response of the main frequency components of EEG alpha-rhythm to the hyperventilation test.

Treatment of hypersomnolence in myotonic dystrophy with a CNS stimulant.

A 42-year-old man with myotonic dystrophy developed severe hypersomnolence during the year prior to admission for acute respiratory insufficiency. However, his hypersomnolence could be attributed to a central dysfunction, and during a follow-up period of 3 years, was successfully treated with methylphenidate.

Single cell studies of the primate putamen. I. Functional organization.

In order to clarify the functional organization of the putamen and the nature of sensory inputs to this structure we studied the relation of single cell activity to active movements and somatosensory stimulation in the awake primate. Neurons (N = 707) were categorized on the basis of their relation to active movements or responses to sensory stimulation of individual body parts. 38% of neurons studied were related to the arm, 9% to the leg, 11% to the mouth or face, and 3% to axial portions of the body. The remaining neurons exhibited non-specific activation which could not be confidently loca

Hypersomnia in major depressive disorders.

Hypersomnia was experienced by 17 of 102 patients with major depressive disorder. Comparisons between hypersomnic and non-hypersomnic depressives demonstrated significant associations between hypersomnia and increased appetite, weight gain, agitation, headaches, depression in a first-degree relative, and earlier age of illness onset.

Narcolepsy and disturbed nocturnal sleep.

Disturbed nocturnal sleep is considered a symptom of narcolepsy. Polysomnographic recordings of 57 consecutive narcoleptic patients were reviewed for evidence of disturbed sleep. When disrupted sleep was present, it was attributable to recognized sleep disorders: nocturnal myoclonus and sleep apnea. Comparison of standard polysomnographically derived parameters of patients who had narcolepsy without sleep apnea or nocturnal myoclonus with those of a normal control group, showed no evidence of disturbed sleep in the patient population. The narcoleptics that also had nocturnal myoclonus or upper

Sleep and bedtime behavior in preschool-aged children.

Age stage-specific changes in patterns of sleep and bedtime behavior were examined in 109 normally developing preschool-aged children who were the subjects of the New York Longitudinal Study of Temperament and Development. The data were derived from information abstracted from interviews conducted with parents about the behavior of their children in daily life situations at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years of age. The following age trends were found: older children were significantly more likely to exhibit a prolongation of bedtime routine, insist on sleeping with the light on, take a treasured object

Sleep paralysis among medical students.

Sleep paralysis is a sensation of an inability to speak or move other muscles when falling asleep or awakening. Sleep paralysis by itself has been reported as occurring infrequently and many clinicians are uncertain of its significance. In contrast, sleep paralysis in conjunction with sleep attacks has been reported as a concomitant of narcolepsy. To further examine the incidence of sleep paralysis, the responses of 80 first-year medical students, 16.25% had experienced predormital, postdormital, or both types of sleep paralysis. These episodes occurred infrequently--only once or twice for mos

Reversible vascular isolation of carotid sinuses in conscious dogs.

A surgical technique has been developed that permits reversible vascular isolation of both carotid sinuses in the conscious dog. Seven dogs so prepared were studied over periods of 4-12 wk. Repeatable stimulus-response curves relating arterial blood pressure to carotid sinus pressure were obtained for sinus pressures of 40-240 mmHg. Two studies gave evidence that the ability of the carotid baroreceptors to influence arterial pressure was not or was minimally affected by the surgical dissection. In 10 dogs one sinus was surgically prepared; 3 wk later the dogs were anesthetized and vagotomized.
