Comparative phenotypic and CARD15 mutational analysis among African American, Hispanic, and White children with Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite a large body of literature on the subject of Crohn's disease (CD), very little information is available on racial/ethnic differences related to disease presentation, clinical course, and genetics. The first identified CD susceptibility gene, CARD15, seems to be present in up to 40% of white children with CD. However, the frequency of this gene among patients with CD of other racial/ethnic groups in the United States is not known. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter study on African American and Hispanic children with CD to describe the phenotypic and genotypic (CARD15) fea…

Atrial fibrillation triggered by postinfarction ventricular premature beats in a patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

The mechanism by which atrial fibrillation is initiated in patients with accessory pathways is not fully understood. Retrograde conduction of ventricular premature beats to the atrium, causing the arrhythmia, is a very rare cause. We report a patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), without previous tachycardias, who presented multiple episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation after having a myocardial infarction. During the electrophysiological (EP) study the patient presented two spontaneous episodes of atrial fibrillation initiated by ventricular premature beats conducted to the …

BMI and cervical cancer screening among white, African-American, and Hispanic women in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We examined cervical cancer screening by BMI in white, African-American, and Hispanic women and explored women's reasons for not undergoing screening. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We used logistic regression to examine Pap testing in the preceding 3 years across BMI groups for white (n = 6419), African-American (n = 1715), and Hispanic women (n = 1859) age 18 to 75 years who responded to the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. We used bivariable analyses to describe women's reasons for not undergoing testing and examined whether unscreened women received physician recommend…

Unidirectional and bidirectional intimate partner violence among White, Black, and Hispanic couples in the United States.

This article describes the rates and risk factors of unidirectional and bidirectional intimate partner violence (IPV) among White, Black and Hispanic couples in the US. Subjects constitute a multistage area probability sample representative of married and cohabiting couples from the 48 contiguous United States. Results indicate that most couples reporting violence engage in bidirectional IPV. Blacks are more likely than Whites to report bidirectional IPV. In addition, severe unidirectional and bidirectional IPV are more common among Blacks and Hispanics. The results also indicate that predicto…

Elevated white cell count in acute coronary syndromes: relationship to variants in inflammatory and thrombotic genes.

BACKGROUND: Elevated white blood cell counts (WBC) in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) increase the risk of recurrent events, but it is not known if this is exacerbated by pro-inflammatory factors. We sought to identify whether pro-inflammatory genetic variants contributed to alterations in WBC and C-reactive protein (CRP) in an ACS population. METHODS: WBC and genotype of interleukin 6 (IL-6 G-174C) and of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN intronic repeat polymorphism) were investigated in 732 Caucasian patients with ACS in the OPUS-TIMI-16 trial. Samples for measurement of WBC and infl…

Antigen recognition by serum antibodies in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) experimentally infected with Mycobacterium bovis.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have emerged as reservoirs of bovine tuberculosis in northern America. For tuberculosis surveillance of deer, antibody-based assays are particularly attractive because deer are handled only once and immediate processing of the sample is not required. Sera collected sequentially from 25 Mycobacterium bovis-infected and 7 noninfected deer were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting, and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA) for immunoglobulin specific to M. bovis antigens. Various routes of experimental M. bovis infectio…

Long-term prediction of incident hip fracture risk in elderly white women: study of osteoporotic fractures.

OBJECTIVES: To identify independent risk factors for first hip fracture over 10 years of follow-up. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETT … this association. CONCLUSION: Although hip BMD is strongly related to hip fracture risk in elderly white women, other clinical risk factors also are independent predictors of long-term risk and provide additional insight into the prevention of fracture in high-risk women. Clinicians should be alert to factors other than BMD that place older women at a …

ATF3 upregulation in glia during Wallerian degeneration: differential expression in peripheral nerves and CNS white matter.

BACKGROUND: Many changes in gene expression occur in distal stumps of injured nerves but the transcriptional control of these events is poorly understood. We have examined the expression of the transcription factors ATF3 and c-Jun by non-neuronal cells during Wallerian degeneration following injury to sciatic nerves, dorsal roots and optic nerves of rats and mice, using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. RESULTS: Following sciatic nerve injury--transection or transection and reanastomosis--ATF3 was strongly upregulated by endoneurial, but not perineurial cells, of the distal stum

Digital 3D reconstruction of two parahissian accessory bundles in a case of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of digitized histological serial sections of the cardiac conduction system yielded two accessory pathways in a case of a 24-day-old male infant who died after a short period of illness with ECG findings of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. In infants, the differential diagnosis of possible accessory pathways connecting the AV conduction system, atrial or ventricular septum includes dispersed conduction system tissue without connecting features. This is why three-dimensional reconstruction is necessary in order to refute or establish connectivity of cell groups as…

Anatomic analysis of blood vessels in germinal matrix, cerebral cortex, and white matter in developing infants.

The germinal matrix (GM) located in the thick subependymal cell layer of the thalamostriate groove is a major site of cerebral hemorrhage in premature infants. Comparing the morphology of vasculature among GM, gray and white matter of the brain may help in understanding the pathogenesis of GM hemorrhage and also of periventricular leukomalacia. The objective of the present study was to determine the morphology of blood vessels in the GM, gray matter, and white matter and to examine maturational changes in the morphology of these vessels as a function of gestational age. We measured vessel dens…

Developmental lag in superoxide dismutases relative to other antioxidant enzymes in premyelinated human telencephalic white matter.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) involves free radical injury to developing oligodendrocytes (OLs), resulting from ischemia/reperfusion, particularly between 24 and 32 gestational weeks. Using immunocytochemistry and Western blots, we tested the hypothesis that this vulnerability to free radical toxicity results, in part, from developmental lack of superoxide dismutases (SOD)-1 and -2, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the telencephalic white matter of the human fetus. During the period of greatest PVL risk and through term (> or = 37 weeks), expression of both SODs (for conversi…

Whole-brain voxel-based statistical analysis of gray matter and white matter in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Volumetric MRI studies based on manual labeling of selected anatomical structures have provided in vivo evidence that brain abnormalities associated with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) extend beyond the hippocampus. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) is a fully automated image analysis technique allowing identification of regional differences in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) between groups of subjects without a prior region of interest. The purpose of this study was to determine whole-brain GM and WM changes in TLE and to investigate the relationship between these abnormalities and clinical …

Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in a white lion cub (Panthera leo), with concomitant radiographic double cortical line.

A captive-bred white lion cub was presented with hindquarter pain, lameness and reluctance to move. Radiographs revealed generalised osteoapenia, multiple fractures, a severely collapsed pelvic girdle, bilateral lateral bowing of the scapulae and mild kyphosis of the caudal vertebrae. A double cortical line, a distinct sign of osteopaenia, was repeatedly seen on the pelvic limbs, most strikingly along both femurs. Based on radiographic findings and a history of an exclusive meat diet since weaning, a diagnosis of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism was made. The diet was changed to a com…

High b value diffusion-weighted imaging is more sensitive to white matter degeneration in Alzheimer's disease.

It has been reported that diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can detect white matter degeneration in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain. We hypothesized that imaging of the slow diffusion component using high b value DWI is more sensitive to AD-related white matter degeneration than is conventional DWI, and therefore we studied the effects of high b value on lesion-to-normal contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Seven AD patients and seven age-matched normal subjects were studied with full-tensor DWI at three different b values (1000, 2000, and 4000 s/mm(2)) without changing echo time or d…

Frustrated nesting behaviour: relation to extra-cuticular shell calcium and bone strength in White Leghorn hens.

1. The inability of hens to express normal nesting behaviour in battery cages results in frustration, manifesting itself as stereotyped pacing. Frustration can cause hens to retain their eggs beyond the expected time of lay, resulting in an extra-cuticular layer of calcium on eggshells. 2. This study investigated whether frustrated nesting behaviour caused extra-cuticular calcification of eggshells and whether this loss of non-structural calcium to eggshells may have subsequently contributed to weak bones in spent hens. 3. One hundred and twenty hens were assigned to one of three treatments: N

Distortion-free diffusion tensor imaging of cranial nerves and of inferior temporal and orbitofrontal white matter.

The main impact of functional neuroimaging has been its ability to locate neuronal activity either directly (EEG, MEG) or through the hemody … on tensor imaging (DTI) methods. These can be used to determine the orientation of fiber bundles in white matter on the basis of the diffusion characteristics of water. Commonly, DTI data are acquired using echo planar imaging which suffers from susceptibility artifacts in orbitofrontal and inferior temporal cortex. Here we demonstrate the use of an alt …

Diffuse magnetic resonance imaging white-matter changes in a 15-year-old boy with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

We report a 15-year-old boy who presented with recurrent headaches associated with numbness, confusion, and speech difficulty. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffuse bilateral white-matter hyperintensity on fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery and T2-weighted images in the internal capsule, periventricular and subcortical white matter, base of the pons, and middle cerebellar peduncles. Lesions were isointense on T1-weighted images and nonenhancing. Muscle biopsy showed changes consistent with a mitochondrial myopathy. Mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme activity analysis rev…

Growth hormone rapidly induces resistin gene expression in white adipose tissue of spontaneous dwarf (SDR) rats.

Growth hormone is an important regulator of metabolism; both acromegaly and GH therapy in GH-deficiency are associated with a tendency towards insulin-resistance and loss of adiposity. A possible mediator of these effects is the recently identified white adipose tissue (WAT)-derived factor resistin that has been shown to impair glucose tolerance and inhibit adipocyte differentiation. We found that WAT resistin gene expression was significantly suppressed in GH-deficient (SDR) rats compared with their Sprague-Dawley background strain. However, within 4 h of treatment of SDRs with a bolus of rhG…

Photoperiodic regulation of gene expression in brown and white adipose tissue of Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Siberian hamsters exhibit seasonal fluctuations in white adipose tissue (WAT) mass, with peaks in long "summerlike" days (LDs) and nadirs in short "winterlike" days (SDs). These responses can be mimicked in the laboratory after transfer from LDs to SDs. The purpose of the present study was to test whether changes in WAT and brown adipose tissue (BAT) gene expression that are mediated by the sympathetic nervous system in other obesity models are also associated with seasonal adiposity changes in Siberian hamsters. SDs decreased WAT mass and leptin mRNA, increased WAT beta(3)-adrenoceptor mRNA, …
