Quantitative Evaluation of Proliferative Potential Using Flow Cytometry Reveals Intratumoral Heterogeneity and Its Relevance to Tumor Characteristics in Vestibular Schwannomas.

This study sought to explore the existence and clinical significance of intratumoral heterogeneity of proliferative potential in vestibular schwannoma (VS). Rapid intraoperative flow cytometry was utilized with raw samples to measure the proliferative ability of VS. The proliferation index (PI) was defined as the ratio of the number of cells with greater than normal DNA content to the total number of cells. A total of 66 specimens (26 from the intrameatal portion and 40 from the cisternal portion) were obtained from 34 patients with VS. There was a moderate correlation between the PI and MIB-1

Wind farm noise shifts vocalizations of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine.

Wind energy has experienced a notable development during the last decades, driving new challenges for animal communities. Although bird collisions with wind turbines and spatial displacement due to disturbance have been widely described in the literature, other potential impacts remain unclear. In this study, we addressed the effect of turbine noise on the vocal behaviour of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine highly dependent on acoustic communication, the Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti. Based on directional recordings of 49 calling and singing males exposed to a gradient of turbine noise

The natural history of vestibular schwannoma growth-prospective 40-year data from an unselected national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of vestibular schwannoma (VS) is still debated and thus international consensus has not been achieved. Treatment options are observation, radiotherapy, and surgery. Knowledge on the natural history of tumor growth is essential for choice of treatment modality. The aim is to present intra-/extrameatal tumor growth and management data from a prospective, unselected national cohort of patients diagnosed with VS during the period 1976-2015. METHODS: Since 1976, all data from patients diagnosed with sporadic VS in Denmark have been referred to our national treatment

The basis of musical consonance as revealed by congenital amusia.

Some combinations of musical notes sound pleasing and are termed "consonant," but others sound unpleasant and are termed "dissonant." The distinction between consonance and dissonance plays a central role in Western music, and its origins have posed one of the oldest and most debated problems in perception. In modern times, dissonance has been widely believed to be the product of "beating": interference between frequency components in the cochlea that has been believed to be more pronounced in dissonant than consonant sounds. However, harmonic frequency relations, a higher-order sound attribut

Tissue changes after radiosurgery for vestibular schwannomas.

The specific effects of radiosurgery on brain tumor tissue are not well understood. We review several approaches that have been used to address this issue. Correlating the radiobiology of radiosurgery with the radioclinical outcome may help to understand these tissue changes. In vivo imaging investigations are usually performed with MRI, but the use of functional and metabolic imaging, such MR spectroscopy, positron emission tomography or single-photon emission computed tomography may provide additional information on the effects of radiosurgery. Finally, histological observations represent an

Oto-admittance measurements in the diagnosis of otosclerosis.

Theoretical considerations show that admittance measurements are likely to be more sensitive in differentiating between middle-ear pathologies than compliance measurements. Thirty-five ears in 20 patients with clinical otosclerosis were studied to assess the usefulness of admittance measurements in contributing to diagnosis.

Effect of Aging on Middle Ear Absorbance Characteristics Across Frequencies.

PURPOSE: Although age-related auditory changes are well recognized, limited studies have examined how aging affects middle ear mechanics, which can be assessed using wideband tympanometry (WBT). Unlike conventional tympanometry, WBT offers frequency-specific insights into middle ear acoustic transfer function. Ethnic differences in the anatomy of the external and middle ear such as canal length, ossicular dimensions, and stapes configuration may influence acoustic transmission. This study aimed to investigate the effect of aging on middle ear absorbance across frequencies using WBT. METHOD: A

The Influence of Vowel Identity, Vowel Production Variability, and Consonant Environment on Envelope Following Responses.

OBJECTIVES: The vowel-evoked envelope following response (EFR) is a useful tool for studying brainstem processing of speech in natural conso … ct on EFRs, irrespective of vowel identity and variant. The sensitivity of EFRs to nuances in vowel acoustics emphasizes the need for adequate control and evaluation of stimuli proposed for clinical and research purposes.

Audiological evaluation of patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD).

OBJECTIVE: The description of clinical manifestation of hearing problems in cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) remains limited and incomplete, since CCD constitutes a rare congenital disorder. The study aims to provide a complex panel analysis of the auditory system in patients suffering from the disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 4 children with CCD (aged: 12-15), who underwent orthodontic treatment. A full panel analysis of their auditory systems was performed, including high-frequency audiometry and a new method of middle ear assessment - WBT (Wideband Tympanometry). R

Auditory brainstem response.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR), consisting of five to six vertex-positive peaks with separation of about 0.8ms, is very sensitive to factors that affect conduction velocity and hence ABR wave latencies in the brainstem auditory pathways. In addition, disorders causing dissynchronization of neural activity result in an amplitude decrease or disappearance of ABR peaks. The opposite effects occur in the maturation process, which takes about 2 years postterm; here conduction velocity increases quickly to its adult value, but synaptic delays being sensitive to synchronous release of transmit

Voluntary eardrum movement: a marker for tensor tympani contraction?

HYPOTHESIS: Voluntary eardrum movement (VEM) and resultant tympanometric changes reflect tensor tympani (TT) contraction. BACKGROUND: TT contraction has been hypothesized to cause symptoms of aural fullness, tinnitus, clicking, and even vertigo despite the lack of understanding of how it functions or what causes it to contract. Identifying tympanometric changes unique to TT contraction can provide a diagnostic tool for identifying its role in pathologic conditions. METHODS: Various tympanometric measurements were performed on human subjects who could voluntarily move their eardrums. These we

Audiogram of the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) from 2 Hz to 9 kHz.

The pure-tone thresholds of four domestic female chickens were determined from 2 Hz to 9 kHz using the method of conditioned suppression/avoidance. At a level of 60 dB sound pressure level (re 20 μN/m(2)), their hearing range extends from 9.1 Hz to 7.2 kHz, with a best sensitivity of 2.6 dB at 2 kHz. Chickens have better sensitivity than humans for frequencies below 64 Hz; indeed, their sensitivity to infrasound exceeds that of the homing pigeon. However, when threshold testing moved to the lower frequencies, the animals required additional training before their final thresholds were obtained,
