Voluntary respiratory control and cerebral blood flow velocity upon ice-water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: In non-habituated subjects, cold-shock response to cold-water immersion causes rapid reduction in cerebral blood flow velocity (approximately 50%) due to hyperventilation, increasing risk of syncope, aspiration, and drowning. Adaptation to the response is possible, but requires several cold immersions. This study examines whether thorough instruction enables non-habituated persons to attenuate the ventilatory component of cold-shock response. METHODS: There were nine volunteers (four women) who were lowered into a 0 degrees C immersion tank for 60 s. Middle cerebral artery mean

Compensatory mechanisms during walking in response to muscle weakness in spinal muscular atrophy, type III.

Our knowledge on altered neurological control of walking due to weakness of various muscle groups of the lower extremities is limited. The aim of this study was to assess kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic (EMG) walking patterns in a functionally homogeneous group of seven subjects with spinal muscular atrophy, type III (SMA group) and compare them with normal data obtained from nine healthy subjects (CONTROL group) in order to identify characteristic compensatory changes. Muscle strength at the ankle and knee joints was assessed using isokinetic dynamometry to determine variability in m

Hands are us.

Hands play a distinctive role in establishing our identity, both as a tool-using species and as individuals with unique talents and self-awareness. The fit between hands and tools should be as natural (sensitive to the natural functioning of hands) as possible. Improper fit and use leads directly to injuries such as carpal-tunnel syndrome. It is also involved in injuries attributed to compensatory patterns and to unnecessary restrictions of career functioning. Injuries can be avoided or sometimes repaired by redesigning tools and work patterns rather than through surgical or medical means. The

Locomotor adaptation on a split-belt treadmill can improve walking symmetry post-stroke.

Human locomotion must be flexible in order to meet varied environmental demands. Alterations to the gait pattern occur on different time scales, ranging from fast, reactive adjustments to slower, more persistent adaptations. A recent study in humans demonstrated that the cerebellum plays a key role in slower walking adaptations in interlimb coordination during split-belt treadmill walking, but not fast reactive changes. It is not known whether cerebral structures are also important in these processes, though some studies of cats have suggested that they are not. We used a split-belt treadmill

[Stress signaling between human lymphocytes after induction of bystander effect by exposure to ionizing radiation in adaptive doses].

We previously reported that the consequence of human lymphocytes irradiation by the adaptive doses (X-rays, 10 cGy) was a transposition of the homologous chromosome loci in the cell nucleus (FISH method); this phenomenon was mediated by the increase of nucleolus activity. They both are transmited to non-irradiated cells by the bystander effect (BE). We shown that the reaction of stress signaling is induced by the DNA fragments of irradiated lymphocytes. The study shows that after the inhibition of caspase 3 activity in irradiating lymphocytes or the blockade TLR9 in bystander cells the transpo

Morphological and immunohistochemical changes in muscle tissue in association with mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

PURPOSE: Studies of changes in the surrounding soft tissue in association with distraction osteogenesis in the maxillofacial region, where various different kinds of tissue are tightly packed, are rare. In this study, we performed morphological and immunohistochemical investigations of muscle tissue during mandibular distraction osteogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Japanese white rabbits were divided into 2 groups. In 1 group, the mandibular bone was distracted at a rate of 1 mm/day (DO group), whereas in the other group it was advanced by 10 mm all at once (O group). The cross-section of the

Changes in immune responses to oxidized LDL epitopes during aging in hypercholesterolemic apoE(-/-) mice.

Atherosclerosis is a disease associated with aging and is subject to modulation by both the innate and adaptive immune system. The time course of age-dependent changes in immune regulation in the context of atherosclerosis has not been characterized. This study aims to describe alteration of the immune responses to oxidized LDL (oxLDL) during aging that is associated with changes in plaque size and phenotype in apoE(-/-) mice. Mice fed a Western diet were euthanized at 15-17, 36, or >52 wk of age. The descending aortas were stained for assessment of extent of atherosclerosis. Plaque lipid, mac

What can studying musicians tell us about motor control of the hand?

Most standard accounts of human anatomy and physiology are designed to meet the requirements of medical education and therefore consider their subject matter from the standpoint of typical rather than outstanding levels of performance. To understand how high levels of skill are developed and maintained, it is necessary to study elite groups such as professional athletes or musicians. This can lead to the rediscovery of arcane knowledge that has fallen into neglect through a lack of appreciation of its significance. For example, although variability in the muscles and tendons of the hand was we

Cross-organ interactions between reproductive, gastrointestinal, and urinary tracts: modulation by estrous stage and involvement of the hypogastric nerve.

Central nervous system neurons process information converging from the uterus, colon, and bladder, partly via the hypogastric nerve. This processing is influenced by the estrous cycle, suggesting the existence of an estrous-modifiable central nervous system substrate by which input from one pelvic organ can influence functioning of other pelvic organs. Here, we tested predictions from this hypothesis that acute inflammation of colon, uterine horn, or bladder would produce signs of inflammation in the other uninflamed organs (increase vascular permeability) and that cross-organ effects would va

Where tendons and ligaments meet bone: attachment sites ('entheses') in relation to exercise and/or mechanical load.

Entheses (insertion sites, osteotendinous junctions, osteoligamentous junctions) are sites of stress concentration at the region where tendons and ligaments attach to bone. Consequently, they are commonly subject to overuse injuries (enthesopathies) that are well documented in a number of sports. In this review, we focus on the structure-function correlations of entheses on both the hard and the soft tissue sides of the junction. Particular attention is paid to mechanical factors that influence form and function and thus to exploring the relationship between entheses and exercise. The molecula

Carbon dioxide sensitivity during hypoglycaemia-induced, elevated metabolism in the anaesthetized rat.

We have utilized an anaesthetized rat model of insulin-induced hypoglycaemia to test the hypothesis that peripheral chemoreceptor gain is augmented during hypermetabolism. Insulin infusion at 0.4 U kg (-1)min(-1) decreased blood glucose concentration significantly to 3.37 +/- 0.12 mmol l(-1). Whole-body metabolism and basal ventilation were elevated without increase in P(a,CO(2)) (altered non-significantly from the control level, to 37.3 +/- 2.6 mmHg). Chemoreceptor gain, measured either as spontaneous ventilatory airflow sensitivity to P(a,CO(2)) during rebreathing, or by phrenic minute activ

Transverse skeletal and dental asymmetry in adults with unilateral lingual posterior crossbite.

BACKGROUND: Posterior unilateral lingual crossbite (PUXB) is a common malocclusion in children. However, the extent to which PUXB affects the dentition and craniofacial structures in adults has not been fully defined. We investigated dental and skeletal asymmetry in adults with PUXB. METHODS: We randomly selected 15 crossbite subjects (mean age, 26.2 years) and 15 matched controls (mean age, 30.6 years) from 3000 records. Mounted pretreatment dental casts were measured to assess dentoalveolar asymmetry, and posteroanterior radiographs were used to evaluate left-right skeletal asymmetry and po

Effect of enhanced red blood cell aggregation on blood flow resistance in an isolated-perfused guinea pig heart preparation.

The role of red blood cell (RBC) aggregation as a determinant of in vivo blood flow is still unclear. This study was designed to investigate the influence of a well-controlled enhancement of RBC aggregation on blood flow resistance in an isolated-perfused heart preparation. Guinea pig hearts were perfused through a catheter inserted into the root of the aorta using a pressure servo-controlled pump system that maintained perfusion pressures of 30 to 100 mmHg. The hearts were beating at their intrinsic rates and pumping against the perfusion pressure. RBC aggregation was increased by Pluronic (F

Condition for alternans and its control in a two-dimensional mapping model of paced cardiac dynamics.

We investigate a two-dimensional mapping model of a paced, isolated cardiac cell that relates the duration of the action potential to the two preceding diastolic intervals as well as the preceding action potential duration. The model displays rate-dependent restitution and hence memory. We derive a criterion for the stability of the 1:1 response pattern displayed by the model. This criterion can be written in terms of experimentally measured quantities-the slopes of restitution curves obtained via different pacing protocols. In addition, we analyze the two-dimensional mapping model in the pres

[Limiting factors of exercise capacity in patients with COPD].

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Moderate to severe COPD patients demonstrate severe impairments in exercise performance in daily activities, significantly affecting their quality of life. There are several causes for this limitation found in literature: air-flow limitation, lung hyperinflation, respiratory and peripheral muscles weakness, among others. In this study we intended to identify the potentially relevant factors that influence exercise performance in a group of moderate to severe COPD patients. We studied 24 male pat

Medial vestibular nucleus mediates the cardiorespiratory responses to fastigial nuclear activation and hypercapnia.

Electrical stimulation of the cerebellar fastigial nucleus (FN) evokes hyperventilation and hypertension responses that are similar to those induced by stimulation of the medial region of the vestibular nucleus (VNM). Because there are mutual projections between these two nuclei morphologically, we hypothesized that the FN-mediated cardiorespiratory responses were related to the integrity of the VNM. Experiments were conducted on 21 anesthetized, tracheotomized, and spontaneously breathing rats. Electrical stimulation (approximately 10 s) of the FN was used to evoke cardiorespiratory responses

Effect of cognitive arousal on sleep latency, somatic and cortical arousal following partial sleep deprivation.

Emerging research has shown that sleepiness, defined as the tendency to fall asleep, is not only determined by sleep pressure and time of day, but also by physiological and cognitive arousal. In this study we evaluated (i) the impact of experimentally induced cognitive arousal on electroencephalogram (EEG) defined sleep latency, and subjective, somatic and cortical arousal, and (ii) whether experimentally induced cognitive arousal enhances performance on a driving simulator test. Twelve healthy sleepers each spent three nights and the following day in the sleep laboratory: an adaptation, a cog

Impact of changes in inspired oxygen and carbon dioxide on respiratory instability in the lamb.

We examined the effect of hypoxia and hypercapnia administered during deliberately induced periodic breathing (PB) in seven lambs following posthyperventilation apnea. Based on our theoretical analysis, the sensitivity or loop gain (LG) of the respiratory control system of the lamb is directly proportional to the difference between alveolar PO2 and inspired PO2. This analysis indicates that during PB, when by necessity LG is >1, replacement of the inspired gas with one of reduced PO2 lowers LG; if we made inspired PO2 approximate alveolar PO2, we predict that LG would be approximately zero and
