Mismatch Negativity and P3a in Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Behavioral Correlates and Clinical Implications.

In a sample of 37 adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 35 typically-developing controls (TDC), we investigated sensory symptoms by clinical measures, and Mismatch Negativity and P3a component at Fz with the frequency and duration oddball paradigms of event-related potentials. Results showed that compared to TDC, ASD participants reported more sensory symptoms, and presented a shorter P3a peak latency in the duration paradigm, which was correlated with more social awareness deficits. In the frequency paradigm, P3a parameters were correlated with sensation avoidin

Transition to adult health care for adolescents with spina bifida: research issues.

The increasing survival of children and young people with congenital disabilities such as spina bifida (SB) provides a challenge to health care systems globally about how best to respond to the multitude of health, developmental, and psychosocial needs of those affected by this complex disorder across the lifespan, not just in childhood and adolescence. The goal of transition to adult health care is to maximize lifelong functioning through the provision of quality, developmentally appropriate health care that continues uninterrupted as the individual moves from adolescence to adulthood. The ob

Body mass index of Kuwaiti adolescents aged 10-14 years: reference percentiles and curves.

The aim of this population-based study was to develop body mass index (BMI) reference standards for Kuwaiti adolescents for use in Kuwait and other Gulf countries. All available intermediate school students aged 10-14 years (32 624 males and 30 209 females) were measured for weight and height. Polynomial regression smoothing techniques were used to obtain the best-fitting curves for BMI percentiles. The BMI of boys at lower centiles and ages was almost always higher than girls. At higher centiles, the BMI of girls was almost always higher than boys. The data were compared with the United State

Supportive parenting moderates the effect of discrimination upon anger, hostile view of relationships, and violence among African American boys.

Studies have shown that exposure to discrimination increases the probability that African American adolescents will engage in delinquent behavior, especially acts of violence. The present study extended this research by examining the extent to which supportive parenting buffers a youth from these deleterious consequences of discrimination. Analyses based upon two waves of data from a sample of 332 African American adolescent males and their caretakers supported this hypothesis. Further the results indicated that there are two avenues whereby supportive parenting reduces the probability that di

Impact of transcendental meditation on ambulatory blood pressure in African-American adolescents.

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of stress reduction on blood pressure (BP) in adolescents by the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program. African-American adolescents (aged 16.2 +/- 1.3 years) with high normal systolic BP were randomly assigned to either 4-month TM (n = 50) or health education control (n = 50) groups. Ambulatory 24-h BP measures were recorded at pretest, 2- and 4-month post-tests, and 4-month follow-up. Greater decreases in daytime systolic BP (P < .04) and diastolic BP (P < .06) in the TM group compared with the control group across the visits demonstra

[Children in the drive for thinness. How early anorexia nervosa modifies development].

In adolescents and young women, the prevalence of anorexia nervosa is 0.5-1%. Approximately 5% of all anorectics are younger than 12 years of age. Frequent psychiatric concomitant conditions that develop during the long-term course are depression or dysthymia (in our own patient material approximately 14%) and anxiety (some 28%). In our own studies, healing success was achieved in 54% of the cases; 18% achieved partial remission with remnant symptoms of an unspecific eating disorder, and 28% continued to exhibit anorectic and/or bulimic symptoms. Of prognostic importance were eating disorders

Obesity and autonomic function in adolescence.

Hypertension and obesity are risk factors for coronary heart diseases in adults. In turn, childhood overweight and high blood pressure increase the risk of subsequent obesity and hypertension in adulthood. Human obesity is characterized by profound alterations of hemodynamic and metabolic states. Whether these alterations involve sympathetic nervous system control on cardiac function is controversial. We report the results of our study, conducted in a sample of obese adolescents by using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. An increase in sympathetic tone coupled with a reduction

Circadian rhythms in microglia mediate early life synaptic development in a sex-specific manner.

Children today experience widespread circadian disruption from nighttime screen use and irregular sleep, yet how internal clocks shape brain development is unclear. Adolescence is a critical window when synaptic connectivity is refined, in part by microglia that engulf synaptic elements. Here, in adolescent mice, we show that hippocampal microglia exhibit diurnal transcriptional rhythms, with synaptic pruning gene expression peaking during the rest phase. Inducible deletion of the core clock gene Bmal1 in microglia in early life abolishes these rhythms and alters developing hippocampal synapse

Exosome-mediated cholesterol flow drives scoliosis progression via promoting the spinal cartilage-bone positive feedback.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of spinal deformity among adolescents. To explore its etiology of progression and scoliosis-modifying drugs, chondrocytic senescence was confirmed in AIS facet joint cartilage by analyzing clinical specimen. Furthermore, through 4D/480 label-free proteomics analysis, we identified an exosome-mediated positive feedback loop during scoliosis progression, which driving the elevation of cholesterol flow between spinal cartilage and vertebra. To further investigate the pathological significance of the loop in vivo, high-cholesterol flow

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor mutation as a cause of pubertal delay.

A mid-adolescent boy presented with pubertal delay and micropenis. His sister had amenorrhoea. Laboratory evaluation confirmed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Brain MRI showed normal pituitary and hypothalamus, though the olfactory bulbs assessment was limited by artefacts. Testosterone therapy enabled the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Subsequent genetic testing identified compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor gene, establishing the molecular basis of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH). Identifying a genetic cause a

Multiple dimensions of reward-sensitivity and cognitive control relate to psychopathology: an exploratory structural equation modeling approach.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormalities in reward sensitivity and cognitive control are observed in multiple psychiatric disorders. However, differences in measurement of reward sensitivity and cognitive control across studies have yielded mixed findings. Despite assumptions of convergence, the correlation between survey-based and task-based assessments of these constructs remains small. METHODS: In this preregistered study of data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (N = 11,875; ages 9-12 years), we examined relationships across these constructs and with psychopathology using ex

Fulminant Lyme Carditis With Rapid Hemodynamic Deterioration in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

Lyme carditis is a rare but potentially severe complication of Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. We report the case of a 16-year-old adolescent with no significant past medical history, admitted for hemodynamic instability in a febrile context associated with respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms evolving over several days. Transthoracic echocardiography showed marked biventricular dilation with global hypokinesia and a left ventricular ejection fraction estimated at 20-25%, associated with a small pericardial effusion. Laboratory investigations revealed a significant inflammato

When Brain Models Aren't Universal: Benchmarking of Ethnic Bias in MRI-Based Cognitive Prediction Across Modalities.

Predictive neuroimaging models promise precision medicine but risk exacerbating health inequities if they perform unevenly across ethnic/racial groups. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development data, we benchmarked ethnic/racial bias in models predicting cognitive functioning from 81 MRI phenotypes across four training strategies. Models trained on one ethnicity performed best within that group. Models trained on participants sampled without regard to ethnicity, a common practice, performed better on White participants, likely because the ABCD sample was predominantly White. Training on

The Longitudinal Relationship Between Co-Rumination and Emotional Problems in Early Chinese Adolescents: The Moderating Role of Self-Compassion.

The longitudinal relationship between co-rumination and emotional problems has been understudied, particularly regarding the role of protective factors in moderating the relationship. This study employed a cross-lagged analysis to examine the bi-directional relationship between co-rumination and emotional problems, and the moderating role of self-compassion in this dynamic. The participants comprised 814 Chinese junior school students (Mage = 13.98 ± 0.83), who were surveyed over two tracking periods spaced four months apart. The results revealed that (1) baseline levels of co-rumination posit

Preparing for the Next Pandemic: Lessons from COVID-19's Impact on Child and Adolescent Health Inequities in Ghana.

The pandemic spared most children and adolescents in Ghana from severe clinical disease, but it exposed long-standing gaps in services and protection methods. Methods: We conducted a desk-based narrative review of peer-reviewed studies, national and international reports, and grey literature from January 2020 to May 2025. The evidence was organised across eight domains of child and adolescent well-being. Across mental health, gambling and other risky behaviours, access to health services, economic hardship and child labour, nutrition, education, early childhood development, and WASH, the pande

Impact of Percutaneous Intercostal Nerve Stimulation Combined With Diaphragm Pacing on Respiratory Function in Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

In the treatment of respiratory impairment because of cervical spinal cord injury, bilateral implantation of a diaphragmatic pacemaker is considered to be the most effective way to enable patients to achieve independent breathing. However, in patients who can only use unilateral diaphragmatic pacemakers, especially adolescent children, the use of unilateral diaphragmatic pacemakers may have an effect on the productive development of such patients, which can lead to thoracic deformities and a decrease in the efficiency of pacing. This study presents a case of a pediatric patient with high cervi

Associations between handedness and brain functional connectivity patterns in children.

Handedness develops early in life, but the structural and functional brain connectivity patterns associated with it remains unknown. Here we investigate associations between handedness and the asymmetry of brain connectivity in 9- to 10-years old children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Compared to right-handers, left-handers had increased global functional connectivity density in the left-hand motor area and decreased it in the right-hand motor area. A connectivity-based index of handedness provided a sharper differentiation between right- and left-handers. The l

Aerobic exercise improves cognitive flexibility and modulates regional volume changes in a rat model of autism.

Gestational exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is a risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Rodents exposed to VPA in utero display common features of ASD, including volumetric dysregulation in higher-order cognitive regions like the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and the hippocampus. Exercise has been shown in elderly populations to boost cognition and to buffer against brain volume losses with age. This study employed an adolescent treadmill exercise intervention to facilitate cognitive flexibility and regional brain volume regulation in rats expos

Type I congenital vaginal atresia with multiple organ malformations.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal atresia (VA) is a rare female genital tract malformation characterized by the absence or incomplete development of the vagina, often leading to cyclic abdominal pain and menstrual blood retention in adolescent patients. Vaginal atresia is often accompanied by multiple organ malformations. The condition poses significant challenges in diagnosis and management, requiring a multidisciplinary approach. CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we report a case of type I congenital VA in a 13-year-old female presenting with congenital biliary atresia and urinary system malformation. Upon initi

Are the Spinal Changes in the Course of Scoliogeny Primary but Secondary?

In this opinion article, there is an analysis and discussion regarding the effects of growth on the spinal and rib cage deformities, the role of the rib cage in scoliogeny, the lateral spinal profile in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the genetics and epigenetics of AIS, and the interesting and novel field investigating the sleep impact at nighttime on AIS in relation to the sequence of the scoliogenetic changes in scoliotics. The expressed opinions are mainly based on the published peer-reviewed research of the author and his team of co-authors. Based on the analysis noted above, it ca
