Despite the array of hemorrhage models, animal species and experimental designs, it seems clear that naloxone with or without volume replacement has no place in the treatment of rapidly exsanguinating traumatized patients. The unrestrained rats were rotated for 21 and 30 days at 1.1 and 2.0 G. The exposure did not deteriorate their equilibrium function or physical condition, i. e. static and dynamic endurance. However, the exposure decreased the reactivity and sensitivity of the semicircular canals. Bone parameters-longitudinal and transverse bone growth, metaepiphysis morphometry-indicated that the rats developed an acute stress-reaction accompanied by an inhibited growth of limb bones during the first 7 days of rotation. An improved method of producing hepatic amoebiasis in hamsters has been developed. A serially liver-passaged strain of Entamoeba histolytica from experimentally-infected hamsters was used for infection. Small pieces from the infected liver were examined for the presence of amoebae and contained approximately 20,000 active trophozoites per piece. Activity of the antioxidant enzymes under conditions of experimental syndrome of peroxidation was studied in rabbits maintained at a diet deprived of antioxidants. The effects of external thermal support was studied in 66 anaesthesized adult rabbits divided into six groups: control, traumatic shock and haemorrhagic shock; each of these groups had a subgroup with an external thermal support and a subgroup without support. A semipurified liquid diet was used to develop a chronic rat model of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Control female rats gained weight normally, reproduced normally, and gave birth to normal litters on this diet. Increased neonatal mortality, decreased neonatal weights, and altered sex ratios were observed in offspring of experimental alcoholic animals. Preliminary histological results include a mild delay in cell lamination patterns in the cerebral cortex at 4 days postnatal in alcoholic offspring as well as decreased formation of dendritic spines at 7 days postnatal.

The authors have studied 60 rabbits to determine the effect and fate of allograft amniotic membranes (devoid of chorion) used in the intra-peritoneal cavity to control adhesions secondary to bowel perforation and bacterial contamination. Serial administration of mercuric chloride to PVG/C rats induced a glomerulopathy associated with immune complex deposition along the glomerular basement membrane and in the mesangial area. Sixty three samples of dairy creamery effluent were examined for the presence of mycobacteria. Thirty two strains were isolated from 27 samples. These were classified as follows: M. fortuitum (13), M. peregrinum (6), M. gordonae(5), M. marianum (scrofulaceum) (4), unidentified (4). Ten strains, representative of the groups isolated, were tested for their effect on experimental animals. None were pathogenic for guinea pigs or mice but a number produced a minimal amount of skin sensitization in guinea pigs to avian and mammalian tuberculin.

Retentates from benzylpenicillin preparations marketed in Canada were used in immunological studies in order to determine if they were immunogenic in experimental animals with respect to anaphylactic antibody production. The retentates obtained consisted mainly of penicillin polymers. Impurities of protein nature were either insignificant or absent. The penicillin polymers were found to be non-immunogenic in Albino Wistar rats, Wistar Furth rats and Hartley guinea pigs. Furthermore, they were unable to effect positive PCA tests in rats passively sensitized to the penicilloyl determinant.

Clinical and pathologic features of myasthenia gravis suggest a possible autoimmune etiology. Myasthenia is found in association with other putative autoimmune diseases and autoantibodies including anti-muscle antibodies. To determine if the rabbit can act as an intermediate host for ascarids from certain carnivorous animals (skunks, pigs, dogs), 12 rabbits were infected with Ascaris columnaris, Ascaris suum, or Toxocara canis. Clinical signs, microscopic lesions, and morphologic features of ascarids with naturally occurring and experimentally induced A columnaris infections were identical. Of the 3 induced parasitic infections, A columnaris caused the most severe lesions in the central nervous system (CNS).
