There has been a vaccine against tuberculosis (TB) since 1921. This vaccine contains Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a live attenuated strain of the tubercle bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. The vaccine is fairly effective in children, but protection is poor in adults. Protection lasts about 15 years. The vaccine is safe for immunocompetent people, provided it is administered intracutaneously and at the correct dose. This article looks back at the development of the tuberculin skin test and BCG vaccine, and their use in the Netherlands.

Leprosy is caused by an infection with Mycobacterium leprae, an acid-fast, slow-growing, obligate intracellular rod-shaped bacillus. Intrapartum leprosy most commonly occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. This is likely due to pregnancy decreasing cellular immunity, thus allowing the organism to proliferate unchecked. This case report reviews the current understanding of intrapartum leprosy and details the hospital course of a patient who presented with active intrapartum leprosy at 32 weeks gestation.

Methylobacterium mesophilicum is a gram-negative bacillus most often isolated in medical establishments. In humans, M. mesophilicum is considered a conditionally pathogenic flora. Infections in humans generally occur in immunodeficient individuals. This article describes a rare case of M. mesophilicum infection that developed into acute meningitis in a 26-year-old patient. Decreased neutrophil bactericidal activity was also detected. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of meningitis due to M. mesophilicum.

Three cases of post-traumatic endophthalmitis caused by unusual bacteria are presented. The pathogens identified were: (i) Bacillus cereus and Citrobacter freundii; (ii) Pseudomonas fluorescens; and (iii) Chryseobacterium meningosepticum and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Two of these pathogens have not previously been reported to cause endophthalmitis. The available literature regarding the individual cases is summarized and a brief discussion of post-traumatic endophthalmitis is presented, with reference to a recently published large series at the authors' institution.

Cutaneous bacterial disease continues to account for a significant proportion of clinical visits. The continuing emergence of strains that are resistant to available antibacterial agents creates a challenge for dermatologists, who need to keep abreast of current treatment strategies. In this article, antibacterial regimens are presented for skin infections caused by organisms such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Neisseria, Haemophilus ducreyi, Treponema pallidum, Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Pasteurella multocida, Vibrio vulnificus, Actinomyces, and Nocardia.

Anthrax is caused by the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally, but recently has been manufactured as a biological warfare agent. This makes prophylaxis for anthrax an urgent concern and efforts are ongoing for the production of an efficient and safe vaccine. Side effects to the current anthrax vaccine are usually minor and mainly consist of local skin reactions. Occasionally an unusual complication may occur; a case of a patient with lymphocytic vasculitis temporally associated with the anthrax vaccine is reported.

Previously described, but even exceptional, this case report show an empyema in which it's origin was an asymtomatic pyonephrosis, caused because of a big kidney calculus and it's discovery was suspected by the bacillus results.
