A nine-year-old, female spayed, mixed-breed dog was presented with a history of lethargy, anorexia, and bradycardia. Diagnostic evaluation revealed third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block secondary to an infiltrative mass in the septal AV junctional region, with additional masses and nodules in the right third rib, lungs, and kidneys. Necropsy confirmed multifocal neoplastic lesions within the pericardium, myocardium, septal AV junction, rib, kidneys, pancreas, and mesentery. Histopathological examination demonstrated a poorly differentiated sarcoma with an osteosarcoma prioritized.

A restricted polyclonal or biclonal gammopathy resulting in bleeding tendencies was diagnosed in a young, neutered male English bulldog with concurrent splenomegaly, anemia, and severe elevations in IgM and, to a lesser degree, IgA immunoglobulins. A 5-year-old Labrador retriever mixed breed dog was presented for an acute non-weight-bearing left hind limb lameness. A stifle disruption was diagnosed. The patient was treated using a novel extracapsular articulated stifle stabilizing implant (Simitri™). Twelve weeks after surgery the patient had full range of motion of the affected stifle and had begun to return to pre-injury activity. This is the first reported case of this condition being surgically managed successfully in this manner.

A 3-year-old, intact female Pomeranian presented with a 1-month history of coughing. Thoracic radiography showed focal infiltration of the left cranial lung lobe and widening of the cranial mediastinum. Subsequent computed tomography revealed torsion of the caudal segment of the left cranial lung lobe, which was confirmed by exploratory thoracotomy. There was no apparent underlying etiology for the condition. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of lung lobe torsion in this breed and the first detailed CT imaging report for segmental lung lobe torsion.

A four-year-old German shepherd mixed-breed dog was presented with an asymptomatic heart murmur. An atrial septal defect associated with tricuspid and mitral dysplasia (atrioventricular canal defect) was diagnosed. The pulmonary to systemic blood flow ratio was in the range of 2.5:1 (Qp:Qs ratio). Echocardiography and flow pattern across the valves as well as the direction of the shunt allows a better description of the physiopathological consequences of this rare congenital heart disease. Additionally, an Ostium Secundum Type interatrial septum defect was found at necropsy.

Three copies of the X chromosome were identified in a 5-year-old mixed breed infertile bitch. One year after the cytogenetic examination, the bitch died due to gastritis hemorrhagica, an inflammation of the mucus coat of the stomach. Dental studies showed congenital lack of some premolar and molar teeth. Ovaries were of normal shape and size. Also, histologic sections of the ovaries revealed their normal structure, with two corpora lutea and primary follicles. Phenotypic effects of X trisomy are discussed.

The prevalence of cutaneous Malassezia spp was evaluated in a semiquantitative fashion at 3 sites on 98 dogs examined because of various dermatoses. Thirty (10.2%) of the sites and 19 (19.4%) of the dogs had Malassezia spp amounts higher than that found on grossly normal skin. The prevalence of higher than normal amounts did not correlate significantly with sample site, sex, or age. The factors associated with an increased prevalence of increased Malassezia spp counts were seborrheic dermatitis, recent antibiotic treatment, and breed.

Bovine farcy is described for the first time in Ghana in herds kept in the Aveyime area of the Accra Plains. Reasons why the disease seems confined to a small geographical area are not yet clear. Different breeds of cattle are equally affected. Mineral deficiencies were not observed in the samples taken for analysis (Ca, Mg, P, Na, K, Cl). Limited examination of tick population on cattle showed a predominance of A. variegatum. Factors enhancing the pathogenicity and persistence of the Mycobacterium are still not clear. A fat soluble dye was identified as a suitable colourant for mixing with approved dips during the statutory winter dipping period. The optimum concentration of the dye was 0.4 per cent. It uniformly dyed the sheep and depending on the breed persisted on the fleece for three to six months. Any dye that remained on the wool at shearing (six to eight months after dipping) was washed out by scouring solutions containing non-ionic and anionic detergents. The dye did not alter the efficacy of the commonly used insecticides.

Thirteen cases of iatrogenic and bilateral keratoconjunctivitis sicca following the administration of the sulphonamide salicylazosulphapyridine (sulphasalazine) for the treatment of colitis were studied. A retrospective study of medical records from 13 veterinary university hospitals and clinics yielded 73 cases of confirmed primary neoplasms of the kidney and renal pelvis. Analysis of the 34 cases of renal carcinoma revealed no evidence of familial (breed) predisposition, but an excess risk was identified in males, especially during middle life. The morphological and epidemiological features of canine renal carcinoma are similar to those of renal carcinoma in humans. The dog may be a suitable model for further research into the causes of this cancer.

Information on the occurrence of tick-borne diseases of domestic animals in northern Nigeria for the period 1923 to 1966 is summarised. Due to lack of obvious outbreaks and diverse interest of the veterinary staff, the published information is very scanty. Significant for the period under review was the complicating factor of Babesia bigemina infections in cattle undergoing rinderpest immunisation procedures or suffering from trypanosomiasis. Tick-borne diseases were also considered important in imported breeds of livestock and in those kept under intensive systems of management.
