BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) globally have a high burden of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs). MSM do not frequently receive rectal STI testing because of several barriers, such as not being out (disclosure of sexual behavior). We evaluate whether Chinese MSM select an STI test (rectal vs urethral) appropriate for their sexual behavior (insertive and/or receptive), and the interactions with being out.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from a cross sectional MSM survey conducted at a multisite randomized controlled trial (RCT) (December 2018 to January

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen in humans and a frequent cause of asymptomatic, persistent infections leading to serious complications, particularly in young women. Chlamydia displays a unique obligate intracellular lifestyle involving the infectious elementary body and the replicative reticulate body. In the presence of stressors such as gamma-interferon (IFNγ) or beta-lactam antibiotics, C. trachomatis undergoes an interruption in its replication cycle and enters a viable but non-cultivable state. Upon removal of the stressors, surviving C. tr

BACKGROUND: Despite major efforts to control their spread, reported sexually transmitted infections (STI) are increasing. Using data from a mid-sized Midwest metropolitan area, we examined the settings in which individuals are tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia in relation to demographics and test result to determine where interventions may best be focused.
METHODS: A deidentified and integrated registry, containing records from all patients tested for an STI from 2003 to 2014, was created by combining data from a large health information exchange and the reporting district's STI Program loca

OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global cause of acute illness. Early detection plays a crucial role in interrupting transmission and preventing complications. However, the accessibility of STI testing is curbed by the lack of an overall preferred sample type. By means of a prospective study in female sex workers (FSW), we compared the sensitivity of samples from different anatomical sites in detecting Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium and human papillomavirus. Besides, we documented the prevalence of each STI in

BACKGROUND: Private sector utilization and cost information on testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States is limited.
METHODS: We used current procedural terminology codes for tests for HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), genital herpes simplex virus type 2, hepatitis B virus, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis. We extracted outpatient claims for persons aged 15 to 24 years in 2008 from the MarketScan database. Utilization was measured as the number of claims per 100,000 enrollees for tests specific to a given infection. We estimated claims rates and

BACKGROUND: Studies in antenatal care clinics suggest that lower genital tract infections (LGTI) may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO). We sought to characterize antenatal care patterns and determine whether LGTI are independently associated with preterm birth and/or low-birth weight among a high-risk public sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic population.
METHODS: Electronic STD clinic medical records and state birth records were matched for 730 pregnant women age 13 to 49 tested for 5 treatable LGTI (bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, early syphilis, and tric

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a cytokine that can be found in the peritoneal fluid (PF) of patients with endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) as a response to inflammatory disorders and infections. The cytotoxic effect of this cytokine could be a factor participating in the pathology of various gynecological diseases, and could also be accountable for the high immunological response and damage to the tubal epithelium. The objective of this study was to establish the presence of TNF-alpha in asymptomatic infertility and its association with various isolat

Among ocular infections, trachoma is the main cause of blindness. Repeated conjunctival Chlamydia trachomatis infections lead to trichiasis, corneal opacification, and visual impairment. Surgery is often needed to relieve discomfort and preserve vision; however, a high postoperative trachomatous trichiasis (PTT) rate has been observed in various settings. We wanted to know why, whether PTT rates could be reduced, and how to manage the PTT that occurs. We performed a search of the literature. Of 217 papers screened, 59 studies were identified for inclusion as potentially relevant, the majority

Mycoplasma genitalium is a newly emerged sexually transmitted disease pathogen and an independent risk factor for female cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. The clinical symptoms caused by M. genitalium infection are mild and easily ignored. If left untreated, M. genitalium can grow along the reproductive tract and cause salpingitis, leading to infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, M. genitalium infection in late pregnancy can increase the incidence of preterm birth. M. genitalium infections are often accompanied by co-infection with other sexually transmitted pathogens (Chl

Documented cases of monkeypox virus outside of Africa are rare, but as of August 22, 2022, the CDC was tracking 18,101 cases in the United States. Monkeypox rash can easily mimic other sexually transmitted infections, which may occur concurrently. This case report describes a 36-year old Caucasian man who has sex with men. The patient came in for a routine history and physical examination and disclosed a perianal rash. The patient had a medical history significant for undertreated HIV, ankylosing spondylitis, and homelessness. On examination, he had multiple perianal deep-seated ulcers that we

The high prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a serious problem in the treatment of nosocomial infections in the past three decades. Recently, we developed a new small-molecule inhibitor belonging to a class of 2,4-disubstituted-4H-[1,3,4]-thiadiazine-5-ones, Fluorothiazinon (FT, previously called CL-55). FT effectively suppressed the T3SS of Chlamydia spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella sp. without affecting bacterial growth in vitro. In this study, we describe that prophylactic use of FT for 4 days prior to challenge with resistant clinical isolat

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the world. Important risk factors of thrombosis include bed restraint, surgery, major trauma, long journeys, inflammation, pregnancy, and oral contraceptives, previous venous thromboembolism, cancer, and bacterial infections. Sepsis increases the risk of blood clot formation 2-20 times. In this review, we discussed various mechanisms related to the role of bacteria in venous thrombosis also taking into consideration the role of the human microbio

Introduction. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is dysbiosis associated with an increased risk of several sexually transmitted infections. It is primarily diagnosed via Gram staining, although molecular analyses have presented higher diagnostic accuracy.Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the molecular epidemiology of BV in asymptomatic women to determine its association with several commensal and pathogenic micro-organisms of the genitalia.Methodology. The prevalence of BV was investigated through semiquantitative assessment of 201 women recruited during their routine gynaecological inspection at an out

Prior studies have demonstrated that both bacterial vaginosis (BV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are strong independent risk factors for subsequent STI. In observational studies of this biological enhancement (BE) hypothesis, it is important to adjust for the risk of STI exposure so that the independent effect of BE can be assessed. We sought to model if two markers of local sexual network (partner concurrency and cumulative number of STIs) represented residual confounding in the models of risk for subsequent infection in a study that screened 3620 women for STIs every 3 months fo
