Failure Mode and Effect Analysis: Engineering Safer Neurocritical Care Transitions.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Inter-hospital patient transfers for neurocritical care are increasingly common due to increased regionalization for acute care, including stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. This process of transfer is uniquely vulnerable to errors and risk given numerous handoffs involving multiple providers, from several disciplines, located at different institutions. We present failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) as a systems engineering methodology that can be applied to neurocritical care transitions to reduce failures in communication and improve patient safety. Specifically,

Overcoming Challenges to Treating Tobacco use During Pregnancy - A Qualitative study of Australian General Practitioners Barriers.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners can play an important role in addressing smoking among pregnant women but studies suggest they rarely do so. The aim of this study was to explore general practitioners perceptions about the management of smoking in pregnancy, and what would enable them to provide better care. METHODS: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted (Feb-July 2017), with 19 Australian general practitioners recruited from a sample that participated in a national survey on managing smoking during pregnancy; and through a national conference. The interview guide was structu

Traditional cooking practices and preferences for stove features among women in rural Senegal: Informing improved cookstove design and interventions.

Nearly half the world's population burns solid fuel for cooking, heating, and lighting. The incomplete combustion of these fuels is associated with detrimental health and environmental effects. The design and distribution of improved cookstoves that increase combustion efficiency and reduce indoor air pollution are a global priority. However, promoting exclusive and sustainable use of the improved stoves has proved challenging. In 2012, we conducted a survey in a community in rural Senegal to describe stove ownership and preferences for different stove technologies. This report aims to describ

Testing the efficacy of a brief sexual risk reduction intervention among high-risk American Indian adults: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: American Indian adults are more likely to experience co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders than adults of other racial/ethnic groups and are disproportionately burdened by the most common sexually transmitted infections, namely chlamydia and gonorrhea. Several behavioral interventions are proven efficacious in lowering risk for sexually transmitted infection in various populations and, if adapted to address barriers experienced by American Indian adults who suffer from mental health and substance use problems, may be useful for dissemination in American Indian comm

Control of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Quang Tri province, Vietnam: voices from the human-animal interface.

INTRODUCTION: Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is caused by the haemagglutinin 5, neuraminidase 1 (H5N1) influenza A virus. Around 80% of households in rural Vietnam raise poultry, which provides food security and nutrition to their households and beyond. Of these, around 15-20% are semi-commercial producers, producing at least 28% of the country's chicken. Through learning the experiences of these semi-commercial farmers, this study aimed to explore the local understandings and sociocultural aspects of HPAI's impact, particularly the aetiology, diagnosis, and the prevention and contro

International scientific collaboration in HIV and HPV: a network analysis.

Research endeavours require the collaborative effort of an increasing number of individuals. International scientific collaborations are particularly important for HIV and HPV co-infection studies, since the burden of disease is rising in developing countries, but most experts and research funds are found in developed countries, where the prevalence of HIV is low. The objective of our study was to investigate patterns of international scientific collaboration in HIV and HPV research using social network analysis. Through a systematic review of the literature, we obtained epidemiological data,

Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in boreal forest soils: a mycorrhizal ecosystems perspective.

The importance of developing multi-disciplinary approaches to solving problems relating to anthropogenic pollution is now clearly appreciated by the scientific community, and this is especially evident in boreal ecosystems exposed to escalating threats of petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) contamination through expanded natural resource extraction activities. This review aims to synthesize information regarding the fate and behaviour of PHCs in boreal forest soils in both ecological and sustainable management contexts. From this, we hope to evaluate potential management strategies, identify gaps in k

Governance, financing, and cultural safety in Taiwan's indigenous long-term care: a CFIR/RE-AIM analysis of Wenjian stations.

BACKGROUND: Taiwan’s Indigenous communities face profound health inequities driven by colonial legacies, rural ageing, and structurally misaligned long-term care policies. Life expectancy gaps approach 12 years compared to the general population. Indigenous Cultural Health Stations (ICHS; Wenjian Stations) provide community-based support for older adults, yet are constrained by fragmented funding cycles, undervalued cultural labour, and governance arrangements that impede culturally safe health promotion. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how governance arrangements, financing flows,

Metabolic diversity of Ferrovaceae and potential contributions to iron oxidation.

Active and abandoned metal and coal mines generate acidic, metal-laden water that pollutes downstream areas, commonly referred to as acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is host to microbial communities, including acidophilic iron oxidizers. Microbially mediated iron oxidation is a desirable (bio)remediation strategy for AMD. Ferrovaceae are Fe-oxidizing bacteria observed in AMD globally and thus could be an asset for bioremediation strategies. To better understand the potential for Ferrovaceae to contribute to AMD bioremediation, we analyzed 240 genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes from Ferrovac

Establishing a filarial clinical research platform in a resource-limited setting: Lessons and experiences from Tanzania.

This paper examines the establishment and lessons learned from the LeDoxy Trial, a multinational, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study that evaluated doxycycline (200 mg/d and 100 mg/d) over six weeks for the treatment of filarial lymphedema in Tanzania's Lindi and Pwani regions. Conducted from 2018 to 2021 across four sites, the trial enrolled 420 participants aged 14-65 years, addressing a critical gap in lymphatic filariasis (LF) research in geographically remote and historically under-researched areas. The trial faced significant challenges, including limited pre-existing res
