BACKGROUND AND AIM: laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF) is the gold standard of antireflux surgery. Up to 30 % of patients experience symptoms after surgery, with insufficient information available. The main objective was to evaluate epidemiological, clinical, and functional factors associated with symptoms after LNF.
METHODS: a retrospective case-control study was performed of 79 operated patients (2015-2024). The relationship between epidemiological data, functional tests, and imaging study results with the occurrence of symptoms after LNF was assessed.
RESULTS: twenty-four asymptomat

Background: Recurrence of dysphagia following myotomy for achalasia poses clinical and diagnostic challenges. Postmyotomy esophageal diverticula is a rare disorder, usually developing due to inadequate myotomy, resulting in dysphagia. We herein present a new entity of esophageal diverticula developing after successful complete myotomy, which causes dysphagia and mimics recurrence of achalasia. Methods: A review of the prospectively maintained database of all patients with achalasia and diverticula between January 2012 and June 2024 was performed. Demographic, clinical data, diagnosis, treatmen

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, with increased risk for individuals with neurodegenerative conditions. Although dysphagia is a significant risk factor for pneumonia pathogenesis, there is a paucity of data on dysphagia management in patients hospitalized with pneumonia. Therefore, we examined dysphagia service utilization rates and associated clinical factors for older adults hospitalized with pneumonia.
METHODS: We identified community-acquired and aspiration pneumonia (CAP and Asp-PNA) general care hospitalizations among older adults (ag

INTRODUCTION: We hypothesized that Bedside screening tests (BSTs) would identify dysphagia in geriatric trauma patients without overt swallowing difficulties.
METHODS: Trauma patients ≥65 y were eligible for enrollment. Patients with known risk factors for dysphagia were excluded. All patients underwent BST by nursing and speech and language pathologist followed by a diagnostic confirmatory test for dysphagia. The primary outcomes were diagnostic test characteristics for BST.
RESULTS: Of 139 enrolled patients, 29 (21%) had dysphagia. Median age was 78 y (interquartile range: 72-85). Nursing

OBJECTIVE: Botulinum injection into the cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle is the current standard of treatment for retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD), resulting in lasting symptom resolution for up to 80% of patients. Individuals with incomplete symptom relief after CP botulinum toxin (BTX) injection have few treatment options, including repeat BTX injection, dilation, or myotomy. Investigators sought to explore behavioral intervention to facilitate eructation retraining for individuals with incomplete response to CP BTX injections.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of seven

Retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD) is a recently recognized condition characterized by the inability to burp, typically accompanied by gurgling noises, bloating, and flatulence. Percutaneous botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injection into the cricopharyngeus muscle is a minimally invasive treatment with promising effects, although current evidence remains limited. In this prospective, open-label study, we evaluated the clinical effects of increasing doses (10 to 30 U) of EMG-guided unilateral BoNT injection in 67 patients with R-CPD. Symptom severity and quality of life were assessed at

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck cancer (HNC) can cause multiple side effects such as nausea, pain, taste loss, fatigue, oral mucositis, xerostomia, and acute radiation-associated dysphagia (RAD). These factors threaten patients' oral intake (OI) during this RT. Reduced OI can cause weight loss, dehydration, malnutrition, and various comorbidities. On top, reduced OI significantly affects quality of life and may contribute to RAD through the disuse of swallowing muscles. With the aim of maximizing the retention of a patient's OI, it is important to gain an insight into the factor

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia significantly impacts prognosis in individuals with multiple system atrophy (MSA). While video-based assessments are practical, their limited availability highlights the need for a simple tool such as the Dysphagia Severity Scale (DSS) in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the utility of the DSS in assessing dysphagia in MSA patients and its correlations with clinical indices.
METHODS: We examined 43 MSA patients using the DSS and other clinical measures, including the Unified MSA Rating Scale (UMSARS) and cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels. A

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is common among individuals with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is a treatment used to increase expiratory muscle force production for airway protection deficits. To our knowledge, no studies have tested EMST in this population. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of EMST in individuals with PSP.
METHODS: Twenty-nine participants completed baseline measures of maximum expiratory pressure and underwent a trial session of EMST. EMST was considered feasible if participants were able to complete at

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) device sizing protocols on postoperative outcomes and dysphagia.
BACKGROUND: Among predictors of dysphagia after MSA, device size is the only factor that may be modified. Many centers have adopted protocols to increase device size. However, there are limited data on the impact of MSA device upsizing protocols on surgical outcomes.
METHODS: Patients who underwent MSA were implanted with 2 or 3 beads above the sizing device's pop-off point (POP). Clinical and objective outcomes >1 year after surgery were compared between
