Association of atopic dermatitis with thyroid diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and thyroid diseases share features of immune dysregulation, but their association has not yet been comprehensively analyzed. We aimed to systematically investigate the association of AD with thyroid diseases. A systematic review and random-effects model meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL for relevant studies until April 12, 2024. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A subgroup analysis based on age was performed. Twelve observational studies with 93,547,813 subjects were included. The…

Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis in Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common and burdensome symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the physicochemical properties of their nonactive constituents (e.g., glycerol, urea, lactic acid, liquid paraffin, petrolatum) and represent the mainstay of basic therapy for xerosis cutis associated with AD. Newer "emollients plus" containing active ingredients may expand the treatment options available to patients with AD; however, we believe that basic emollients remain an important strategy for the long-term management of xerosis cut…

Need for Speed: Topical Roflumilast for Rapid Control of Seborrheic Dermatitis Flares.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition historically treated with topical antifungals and anti-inflammatory agents. While topical corticosteroids are frequently used to quickly control severe disease or flare-ups, efficacy is limited. Topical roflumilast 0.3% foam is the most recent treatment for seborrheic dermatitis approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA); however, its speed of action in controlling flares has not been fully explored. Herein, a case of severe seborrheic dermatitis with significant treatment response to topical roflumilast 0.3% crea…

Human Milk as Diaper Dermatitis Prevention in the NICU: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) face significant skin integrity challenges due to immature epidermis and weakened immune defenses. Despite the prevalence of diaper dermatitis among NICU infants, exacerbated by overhydration and skin barrier disruption, standardized preventive measures remain inconsistent with a lack of focus on natural solutions. Human milk, with its immunoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, holds promise as a topical preventive agent for diaper dermatitis (DD), yet remains under-researched. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the prevalence …

Genetic Insights Into Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Reassessing the Role of LCE3C_LCE3B Deletion.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a multifactorial inflammatory skin disorder. Polysensitisation, defined as hypersensitivity to ≥ 3 unrelated allergens, reflects a more severe clinical form. The LCE3C_LCE3B deletion, implicated in skin barrier dysfunction, has a yet unclear role in the susceptibility to ACD and polysensitisation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the association between LCE3C_LCE3B deletion and susceptibility to ACD and polysensitisation in the Tunisian population. METHODS: A case-control study included 94 confirmed ACD patients and 125 age- and sex-matc…

Autoeczematization: A Rare Complication of Contact Dermatitis Triggered by Topical Antibiotic Ointment.

Topical antibiotic ointments are widely prescribed for infection prophylaxis after surgery and trauma, yet they are an important cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Autoeczematization, or id reaction, refers to secondary eczematous eruptions that arise at sites distant from a primary localized inflammatory focus. We report a 42-year-old man who developed generalized exudative erythematous papules after application of Baramycin® (bacitracin and fradiomycin sulfate) ointment to an erosion on his right lower leg treated for cellulitis. Despite improvement of systemic inflammatory markers, well-…

Molluscum contagiosum with atopic dermatitis: a clinical retrospective study of 2,278 children.

OBJECTIVE: The dissemination of Molluscum contagiosum (MC), a prevalent pediatric cutaneous viral infection, is enhanced upon atopic dermatitis (AD) or compromised epidermal barrier function. However, the potential influence of AD on the course of MC remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of AD on MC treatment outcomes. METHODS: In this clinical retrospective study, we enrolled children with MC and divided them into control (patients with MC alone) and observation (patients with both MC and AD) groups. Parameters such as sex, age, treatment sessions, and treatment d…

Staphylococcus Strains in Atopic Dermatitis in Children: Toxins Production and Resistance Properties.

Staphylococcus spp. skin colonization is involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). While coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus strains are known to worsen symptoms, the role of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) remains controversial. Further research is needed to clarify the pathogenicity of CoNS in AD patients. A study involving 329 children with AD (mean age: 4.89 years) assessed the frequency of staphylococcal colonization on affected skin, along with the toxin-producing properties and antibiotic resistance of isolated strains. Mild AD: Predominantly colonized by CoNS…

Longitudinal multimodal characterization of radiation dermatitis in the C57BL/6J mouse model.

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a frequent and therapy-limiting toxicity of cancer radiotherapy, yet its mechanistic basis remains poorly understood. To address the need for quantitative, mechanistic insight, we developed a longitudinal C57BL/6J mouse model integrating clinical grading, non-invasive biophysical ("mesoscopic") measurements, histopathology, and bulk transcriptomics. This controlled design enabled pseudo-longitudinal analysis of inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and fibrosis across four weeks after a single 25 Gy exposure. Transcriptomic profiling revealed early activation of phago…

The multi-factorial modes of action of urease in the pathogenesis of incontinence associated dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is a type of skin inflammation caused by chronic exposure to urine and/or faeces. Current treatment strategies involve creating a barrier between the skin and urine/faeces rather than targeting specific irritants. Urease expressing pathogens catalyse the conversion of urea, present in urine, into ammonia. The accumulation of ammonia causes an elevation in skin pH which is believed to activate faecal enzymes which damage skin, and opportunistic pathogens, which lead to secondary infections. OBJECTIVES: To develop a better, multi-factorial mo…

Molecular analysis of cutaneous yeast isolates in the mycobiota of children with atopic dermatitis.

The skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) has a greater diversity of mycobiota. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, analytical, and comparative study was conducted involving 80 patients with AD Group (ADG) and 50 individuals without AD (wADG) in a tertiary hospital in Brazil. Skin scale samples were collected from the frontal, cervical, fossae cubital, and popliteal regions and identified using molecular biology techniques. The results showed that 47.5% of ADG had identified yeasts compared to 0% of wADG (P < .001). The yeasts Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Candida parapsilosi…
