We report 11 cases of tuberculosis among patients with chronic renal failure being treated in our unit. All were born outside the United Kingdom, and represent 25% of the non-europid patients in the unit. This is about a seventy-fold increased incidence of tuberculosis in this group. Diagnosis is difficult and mortality high if the diagnosis is delayed. Culture of tissue biopsies is the most reliable investigation and chemotherapy should be commenced promptly or a therapeutic trial considered in doubtful cases. Chemoprophylaxis may be beneficial in patients from these ethnic groups or in any u

The Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO) began in June of 1973 with financial assistance from the Agency for International Development (AID). The purpose of the organization was to provide training and medical equipment to physicians in developing countries to update their education in reproductive health. JHPIEGO began by offering courses in the United States and shortly thereafter began training at centers in the developing countries themselves. Because of its important contributions to gynecological diagnosis in addition to its use in fert…

In a context of a WHO collaborative study, 12 research centres in 10 countries monitored geographically defined populations over 2 years to … EGO class S+. However, the 2-year pattern of course was considerably more favourable in patients in developing countries compared with patients in developed countries, and the difference could not be fully explained by the higher frequency of acute onsets among the former. Age- and sex-specific incidence rates and estimates of disease expectancy were determined for a …

An intellectual deficit in low socio-economic strata (S-E) of underdeveloped countries is widespread. A similar phenomenon is observed in industrialized countries and is known as socio-cultural retardation (S-CR); one theory holds that it is due to psychosensory deprivation whilst another denies that there is in fact a deficit, there being only middle class-oriented testing applied to subjects whose skills lie in another direction. Whichever theory is true, in underdeveloped countries the problem is compounded by malnutrition and perennial infection so that the intellectual deficit in these so

Some characteristics of children with xerophthalmia are described and the difference in age between those with serious corneal xerophthalmia and those showing milder conjunctival xerophthalmia is noted. The various public health measures instituted to prevent xerophthalmia are examined. The particular importance of protein in food given to severely malnourished children suffering from xerophthalmia is stressed and studies on enzyme activities which are enhanced in the xerophthalmic cornea are briefly noted.

Many low-income developing countries struggle with waste collection and the development of disposal facilities, leading to issues such as illegal dumping and poor enforcement of waste management regulations. The pollution caused by street vendors' waste is particularly evident in the central business districts of cities in developing nations. The informal economy, which includes activities such as street vending has become prevalent in developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) nations. This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature…

BACKGROUND: Anemia remains a major global public health issue, affecting around 24.8% of the world's population in both developing and developed countries. Pregnant women in developing countries are particularly susceptible, with 38.2% affected worldwide. Anemia is also a major contributor to maternal mortality, with 510,000 maternal deaths globally, of which 20% occur in developing countries and are related to anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent form, impacting 1.3 to 2.2 billion individuals, with 50% being women of reproductive age.
AIM: This study aimed to assess the preva…
