Hyaluronic acid concentration in the middle ear fluid as an indicator of severity of the secretory otitis in newborns with cleft palate.

In some acromegalic patients medical treatment does not succeed in normalizing GH/IGF-I values. Data showing IGF-I suppression in acromegaly by estrogen and by tamoxifen use prompted us to reevaluate the effects of estroprogestins (EP) supplementation on GH/IGF-I levels in acromegalic women resistant or only partially sensitive to medical treatment. Eight active acromegalic women (30-52 yr, 4 with regular menses) entered a prospective open pilot study. Three of them, resistant to medical treatment, were off therapy; the remaining five, partially sensitive, maintained it at the maximally effect

Active middle ear implantation: imaging in the pre-operative planning and post-operative assessment of the Vibrant SoundbridgeTM.

Active middle ear implants augment sound waves and directly stimulate the middle ear structures. The most frequently utilised active middle ear implant is the Vibrant Soundbridge TM (VSB).CT plays a vital role in appropriate patient selection and surgical planning of active middle ear implant surgery. The VSB TM offers a number of options for implant placement. The ideal location is influenced by the patient's middle ear and mastoid anatomy as well as the type and severity of the hearing loss. CT provides important information on the surgical access to the middle ear and helps determine the mo…

Cutaneous B-Cell Pseudolymphoma (Lymphocytoma Cutis) of the Earlobe: A Poorly Recognized Complication of Ear Piercing in Children.

Background: Cutaneous pseudolymphoma (CPL) refers to a group of benign, reactive processes that mimic cutaneous lymphoma and are associated with a variety of triggering immune stimuli, including arthropod bites, drugs, and foreign bodies. In children, most cases of CPL are due to a variant of Borreliosis that is specific to Eurasia. Cutaneous pseudolymphoma secondary to ear piercing has only been documented in adults. Case Reports: We present the clinical and pathological findings of cutaneous Bcell psuedolymphoma in two adolescent patients (11-year-old female and 15-year-old male) secondary t…

On the pathophysiology of DFNA9: Effect of pathogenic variants in the COCH gene on inner ear functioning in human and transgenic mice.

DeaFNess Autosomal Dominant 9 (DFNA9) is a dominant hereditary non-syndromic form of progressive sensorineural hearing loss often associated with vestibular dysfunction. DFNA9 is caused by pathogenic variants in the COCH gene. This gene encodes for cochlin, a protein that is abundantly expressed in the spiral ligament and spiral limbus of the inner ear but the function of cochlin is still not fully understood. There are 22 known pathogenic variants located in different domains of the COCH gene that can cause DFNA9, all expressing slightly different phenotypes. It is believed that COCH mutation…

The Physiologic Role of Corticosteroids in Menière's Disease: An Update on Glucocorticoid-mediated Pathophysiology and Corticosteroid Inner Ear Distribution.

: There are multiple treatment options for Ménière's disease (MD), including dietary modifications, aminoglycoside therapy, and surgery. All have limitations, ranging from limited effectiveness to permanent hearing loss. Corticosteroids have long been used to manage MD due to their relative efficacy and tolerability, but the exact mechanism for disease alleviation is uncertain. Until recently, the precise distribution and role that glucocorticoid receptors play in inner ear diseases have remained largely uninvestigated. Several studies propose they influence mechanisms of fluid regulation thro…

The Influence of Piezoelectric Transducer Stimulating Sites on the Performance of Implantable Middle Ear Hearing Devices: A Numerical Analysis.

To overcome the inherent deficiencies of hearing aids, implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have emerged as a new treatment for hearing loss. However, clinical results show that the IMEHD performance varies with its transducer's stimulating site. To numerically analyze the influence of the piezoelectric transducer's stimulating sites on its hearing compensation performance, we constructed a human ear finite element model and confirmed its validity. Based on this finite element model, the displacement stimulation, which simulates the piezoelectric transducer's stimulation, was applie…
