Eyeblink recognition improves fatigue prediction from single-channel forehead EEG in a realistic sustained attention task.

OBJECTIVE: A passive brain-computer interface recognizes its operator's cognitive state without an explicitly performed control task. This technique is commonly used in conjunction with consumer-grade EEG devices for detecting the conditions of fatigue, attention, emotional arousal, or motion sickness. While it is easy to mount the sensors in the forehead area, which is not covered with hair, the recorded signals become greatly contaminated with eyeblink and movement artifacts, which makes it a challenge to acquire the data of suitable for analysis quality, particularly in few channel systems

Sex differences in characteristics of idiopathic generalized epilepsies.

PURPOSE: We compared the demographic, clinical, and electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics between females and males with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). METHODS: In this retrospective study, all patients with a clinical diagnosis of IGE were recruited at the outpatient epilepsy clinic at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, from 2008 through 2019. Age, gender, age at seizure onset, seizure type(s), epilepsy risk factors, and EEG findings of all patients were registered routinely. RESULTS: Six hundred one patients with IGE were studied: 361 patients (60%) were females, and 24

Objective score from initial interview identifies patients with probable dissociative seizures.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a Dissociative Seizures Likelihood Score (DSLS), which is a comprehensive, evidence-based tool using information available during the first outpatient visit to identify patients with "probable" dissociative seizures (DS) to allow early triage to more extensive diagnostic assessment. METHODS: Based on data from 1616 patients with video-electroencephalography (vEEG) confirmed diagnoses, we compared the clinical history from a single neurology interview of patients in five mutually exclusive groups: epileptic seizures (ES), DS, physiologic nonepileptic seizure-like events (…

The Spectrum of Repetitive Behaviors Associated With Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive behaviors refer to a broad class of responses ranging from stereotypic body movements to impulsive/compulsive behaviors. They may be associated with neurological disorders. METHODS: This is a case series of six subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients who presented with a wide spectrum of repetitive motor behaviors and vocalizations. RESULTS: Repetitive motor behaviors involved the upper limbs in all patients and lower limbs in 3 patients. The repetitive movements in the upper limbs were clapping, finger-clicking, hand rubbing, flailing, and dystonic posturi

Late positive complex in event-related potentials tracks memory signals when they are decision relevant.

The Late Positive Complex (LPC) is an Event-Related Potential (ERP) consistently observed in recognition-memory paradigms. In the present study, we investigated whether the LPC tracks the strength of multiple types of memory signals, and whether it does so in a decision dependent manner. For this purpose, we employed judgements of cumulative lifetime exposure to object concepts, and judgements of cumulative recent exposure (i.e., frequency judgements) in a study-test paradigm. A comparison of ERP signatures in relation to degree of prior exposure across the two memory tasks and the study phase

Reduced Sensitivity to Non-Fear-Related Stimulus Changes in Panic Disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is associated with increased body vigilance and reduced cognitive resources directed at non-fear-related stimuli, particularly in the absence of stimulus-rich environments. To date, only few studies have investigated whether this deficit in PD is reflected in reduced mismatch negativity (MMN), an event-related potential indexing preattentive sensitivity to unexpected stimulus changes. We tested 35 patients affected by PD and 42 matched healthy controls in an oddball paradigm, using frequency and duration deviant stimuli to measure auditory MMN. PD patients displayed reduced

Abnormalities of the late positive potential during emotional processing in individuals with psychopathic traits: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with psychopathic traits display deficits in emotional processing. A key event-related potential component involved in emotional processing is the late positive potential (LPP). In healthy controls, LPP amplitude is greater in response to negative stimuli than to positive or neutral stimuli. In the current study, we aimed to compare LPP amplitudes between individuals with psychopathic traits and control subjects when presented with negative, positive or neutral stimuli. We hypothesized that LPP amplitude evoked by emotional stimuli would be reduced in individuals with p

EEG changes in patients on antipsychotic therapy: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to characterize the electroencephalogram (EEG) changes associated with different antipsychotic medications based on the evidence from the literature. METHODS: A systematic search of the databases Medline, PsycINFO, and PubMed was conducted. The Preferred Items Reporting for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in the construction of this systematic review. Primary research articles that reported descriptive EEG results, included comparisons of subjects with and without antipsychotic therapy, and excluded patients wit

Two cases of opercular myoclonic-anarthric status epilepticus.

Opercular myoclonic-anarthric status epilepticus (OMASE) is a rare form of epilepsia partialis continua presenting as fluctuating dysarthria, or even anarthria. The condition is caused by an epileptogenic lesion involving the opercular cortex of either hemisphere. Speech impairment is secondary to bilateral epileptic activity affecting the glossopharyngeal muscles. This bilateral nature of the condition is due to the fact that innervation of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, X and XII from the opercular area of the primary motor cortex is bilateral. The aetiology of the condition varies, and includes

Ongoing Photosensitivity in An Elderly Patient With Jeavons Sydrome.

INTRODUCTION: Photosensitivity, which is a main feature of Jeavons syndrome, can be seen in other types of idiopathic or genetic epilepsies with focal or generalized seizures and tends to disappear spontaneously usually in the second decade. Although it responds well to antiepileptic treatment, especially to valproic acid, it may continue into adulthood in rare cases. CASE REPORT: We describe a 63-year-old male patient with eyelid myoclonia with absences, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and severe photosensitivity accompanied by eyelid myoclonia. Seizures were treated with antiepileptic tr

Operculo-Insular Epilepsy: Scalp and Intracranial Electroencephalographic Findings.

PURPOSE: Operculo-insular seizures are heterogeneous and may resemble seizures originating from the temporal, frontal, or parietal lobe. Although surface and invasive EEG recordings are often necessary to detect operculo-insular seizures, electrophysiological features of operculo-insular epilepsies remain poorly characterized. This study describes the EEG findings of patients with operculo-insular epilepsy. METHODS: We reviewed electrophysiological data of all patients (n = 9) with operculo-insular seizures revealed by intracranial EEG and for whom operculo-insular epilepsy was confirmed by g
