Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remain a common end-organ manifestation of viral infection. Subclinical and mild symptoms lead to neurocognitive and behavioral abnormalities. These are associated, in part, with viral penetrance and persistence in the central nervous system. Infections of peripheral blood monocytes, macrophages, and microglia are the primary drivers of neuroinflammation and neuronal impairments. While current antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced the incidence of HIV-associated dementia, milder forms of HAND continue. Depression,

Chlamydia suis has been detected in numerous disease conditions of pigs, particularly in eye infections. This study examined recurring conjunctivitis cases in five commercial pig farms in Japan. 40.5% of the cases were identified as Chlamydia positive using impression cytology of ocular smears and a genus-specific direct fluorescent antibody. C. suis was detected in 59.5% of the samples using PCR tests targeting 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region (ISR) and ompA gene. Genetic analysis of PCR amplicons revealed nine sequence variants of 16S-23S rRNA ISR and 20 sequence variants within ompA ge…

Chlamydiaceae is a family of obligate intracellular pathogenic bacteria with similar developmental cycles and cell biology responsible for a wide range of diseases in different hosts including genital and eye inflammatory diseases, arthritis, and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. In the present paper, we report that lycopene, one of the main dietary carotenoids, which is present in tomato and some other fruits, has a strong inhibitory effect on C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae infections in alveolar macrophages. This finding was documented by both immunofluor

Pituitary abscess is a rare intracranial infection that can be life-threatening if not appropriately diagnosed and treated upon presentation. The most common presenting symptoms include headache, anterior pituitary hypofunction, and visual field disturbances. Brain imaging with either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging usually reveals intra- or suprasellar lesion(s). Diagnosis is typically confirmed intra- or postoperatively when pathological analysis is done. Clinicians should immediately start empiric antibiotics and request a neurosurgical consult when pituitary abscess is su

C. canimorsus and C. cynodegmi are dog and cat commensals which can be transmitted to humans via bites or scratches and can cause sepsis, meningitis, endocarditis, and eye- or wound infections. Recently an additional Capnocytophaga species was identified as part of the oral flora of healthy dogs and was given the name "C. canis". We previously identified a Capnocytophaga isolate that could not be typed with available diagnostic tests including MALDI-TOF, 16S rRNA sequencing or species-specific PCR. This strain and 21 other Capnocytophaga spp isolated in Sweden from clinical blood- or wound-cul

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma gangrenosum is an acute ulcer necrotic skin infection frequently caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is characterised by necrotic ulcerations circumscribed by an inflammatory halo. Lesions are normally found in the anal, genital and axillary regions. Ecthyma gangrenosum is most commonly seen in immunodepressed patients (cytotoxic chemotherapy, HIV infection, neutropenia or functional neutrophil deficiency, agammaglobulinemia). It is a rarely described complication in chicken pox.

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis is a rare autosomal recessive renal disease caused by mutations in genes for the tight junction transmembrane proteins Claudin-16 (CLDN16) and Claudin-19 (CLDN19). We present the first case report of a Mexican family with three affected sisters carrying a p.Gly20Asp mutation in CLDN19 whose heterozygous mother showed evident hypercalciuria and normal low magnesemia without any other clinical, laboratory, and radiological symptoms of renal disease making of her an unsuitable donor. The affected sisters showed variable phenotypic e

According to the World Health Organization, 5.1% of blindnesses or visual impairments are related to corneal opacification. Cornea is a transparent tissue placed in front of the color of the eye. Its transparency is mandatory for vision. The ocular surface is a functional unit including the cornea and all the elements involved in maintaining its transparency i.e., the eyelids, the conjunctiva, the lymphoid tissue of the conjunctiva, the limbus, the lacrymal glands and the tear film. The destruction of the ocular surface is a disease caused by : traumatisms, infections, chronic inflammations, c

As immunization coverage of varicella vaccination is low, the disease is still very frequent in Austria. Albeit the prognosis in general is good, the incidence of varicella-related hospitalization is about 6 per 100,000 in all children between 0-15 years of age, affecting mainly previously healthy children. Especially young children under the age of 5 are at risk with highest rates among children younger than one year. The most common complications are secondary bacterial infections, neurological and respiratory complications. Two cases of life threatening secondary bacterial infection are pre

Uveitis is fraught with speculations and suppositions with regard to its etiology, progress and prognosis. In several clinical scenarios what may be perceived as due to a systemic infection may actually not be so and the underlying etiology may be an autoimmune process. Investigations in uveitis are sometimes the key in identification and management. Invasive techniques could be of immense value in narrowing down the etiology and help in identifying the cause. This article updates one on the invasive techniques used in biopsy such as anterior chamber paracentesis, vitreous tap and diagnostic v

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence of opportunistic infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients has dramatically decreased; however, clinicians should be made aware of the clinical presentation of immune recovery-mediated HAART-induced ocular inflammation. This case report discusses the correlation of HAART induction with immune recovery and ocular inflammation in an HIV-positive patient with a history of herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO).

Richter syndrome describes the development of high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) or Hodgkin lymphoma in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)/small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). Richter transformation occurs in 3.3 to 10.6% of patients with CLL. The large cell lymphoma clone occurs by transformation of the original CLL clone in the majority of patients, and as a separate and independent neoplasm in fewer cases. Richter transformation may be triggered by viral infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus infection, which are common in immunosuppressed patients. Trisomy 12 and chromosome 1

Uveitis is the inflammation of any or all parts of the vascular tunic of the eye; the vascular tunic includes the iris, the ciliary body, and choroid. A good knowledge base, up-to-date reference materials, and good instruments will improve the diagnosis of uveitis. Feline uveitis can be caused by numerous infectious agents in addition to neoplasia and less likely trauma. The infectious causes most commonly associated with feline uveitis include feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis, systemic fungal infections, toxoplasmosis, and bartonellosis. As the incidence of AIDS continues to increase in the female population, there will be more cases of HIV-positive women in the obstetric suite requiring anesthesia services. Many may be asymptomatic, but there will be patients with active opportunistic infections and malignancies who may or may not have been treated. The impact of both the disease AIDS and the drugs used to treat it on anesthetic technique can be significant. Hematological, neurological, respiratory, and immune dysfunction can be expected in a significant proportion of these women. Universal precautions should be utilized for

The authors used the method of mixed ocular infection and subsequent in vivo selection to isolate Herpes simplex virus type 1 intratypic recombinants with increased ocular virulence and neurovirulence. Four recombinants were studied in some detail (DRG1A3, DRG2A2, DRG3A3, and DRG4A1). The recombinants had lethal doses in 50% of animals tested (LD50) at least 2-3 log units lower than either parent virus (OD4 and CJ394) and caused significantly more severe stromal keratitis, vascularization of the cornea, and blepharitis than either parent. Studies on the ability of DRG1A3 and DRG4A1 to replicat

In Fall 1981, an outbreak of acute infectious conjunctivitis with keratitis (EKC) occurred in patients who had visited a private ophthalmology clinic just prior to onset of illness. Among an estimated 2,200 patient visits to the office from August 10 to October 15, 1981 for problems unrelated to infectious conjunctivitis, 39 (1.8%) persons subsequently developed EKC. The median incubation period was 6.5 days (range, 1 to 14 days). A case-control study was done to identify risk factors associated with contracting EKC; patients with EKC were more likely than control patients to have been examine

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) viruses--enterovirus type 70 (E70), and coxsackie-virus type A24 (CA24)--infect the superficial cells of the conjunctiva and cornea. We examined the growth of several E70 and CA24 isolates in monkey, rabbit, and mouse conjunctival and corneal (C/C) cells. We found that E70 isolates grew well in monkey (10(6.5) TCID50/ml), rabbit (10(4.5) to 10(5.5) TCID50/ml), and mouse (10(3.5) to 10(6.0) TCID50/ml) C/C cultures and caused cytopathic effects (CPE). In contrast, CA24 isolates replicated well and caused CPE only in monkey C/C cultures (10(6.5) TCID50/ml).

In connection with a case report, the mycological diagnosis and treatment of orbital aspergillosis are reviewed. In a 59-year-old male patient an exophthalmus on the right side could be diagnosed as aspergillosis spreading from the corresponding sinus maxillaris into retro- and peri-orbicular regions, after other causes had been excluded by differential diagnosis. In a biopsy specimen from the retrobulbar tumor, a fungal granuloma was found which, histologically and by isolation of the fungus, could be identified as an infection by A. fumigatus. Because of the good visus of the right eye, no e
