Rectal adenocarcinoma presenting with thigh muscle metastasis as the only metastatic site.

Rectal carcinoma with metastasis to skeletal muscle is a rare finding. According to literature review, 17 cases of skeletal muscle metastasis from colorectal carcinoma have been documented where only six cases were rectal carcinomas. We discuss a case of a middle-aged man with a known history of high-grade mucinous adenocarcinoma of the rectum, status post abdominoperineal resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. During the planned chemotherapy course, a right proximal thigh subcutaneous mass was incidentally found which on subsequent biopsy proved to be metastatic from rec

Persistent FDG/PET CT uptake in idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis helps identifying patients at a higher risk for relapse.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of persistent retroperitoneal fibrosis FDG uptake using FDG/PET CT in patients with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF). METHODS: In this monocentric retrospective cohort study, all patients admitted for IRF from January 2009 to December 2017 underwent a FDG/PET CT at diagnosis and during follow up. Metabolic activity of IRF was assessed by retroperitoneal fibrosis FDG uptake measured as maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax). The primary outcome was IRF relapse rate during follow-up. RESULTS: 23 consecutive pat

18F-Flurodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) findings in children with encephalitis and comparison to conventional imaging.

PURPOSE: FDG PET/CT is emerging as a new tool for the evaluation of acute encephalitis (AE). However, to date, there are no exclusively pediatric studies on the use of FDG PET for suspected AE. The objective of this study was to compare qualitative and quantitative brain PET to conventional brain imaging in a cohort of children, and to identify patterns of metabolic abnormalities characteristic of AE. METHODS: This retrospective study included 34 children imaged with PET/CT, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The positivity rate of all three imaging modalities was measured. Besides visu

Can diffusion-weighted whole-body MRI replace contrast-enhanced CT for initial staging of Hodgkin lymphoma in children and adolescents?

BACKGROUND: Although positron emission tomography with 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG-PET/CT) has been recommended as the method of choice for lymphoma staging, it has limited availability in several countries, therefore, studies comparing whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to conventional staging methods or to FDG-PET/CT are an important tool to establish whole-body MRI as an alternative to these methods. OBJECTIVE: To compare whole-body MRI versus conventional imaging methods for staging of Hodgkin lymphoma in children and adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 22

Is 18F-FDG PET/CT useful for the differential diagnosis of solitary pulmonary nodules in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with an increased incidence of lung cancer, but patients with IPF often have poor pulmonary function and are vulnerable to pneumothorax and so using an invasive procedure to diagnose a single nodule detected on chest CT risks a critical adverse outcome. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is recognized to be useful for differentiating between benign and malignant solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) in patients without IPF, but its diagnostic accuracy has not been investigated in pat

A case of longitudinal care of a patient with cardiac sarcoidosis.

Cardiac sarcoidosis has long been an evasive diagnosis with a spectrum of clinical presentations that extend from asymptomatic to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The diagnosis has traditionally relied on histology which suffers from the low sensitivity of endomyocardial biopsy due to the patchy nature of the disease in addition to its invasive nature. Due to significant advancements in imaging, it is now possible to accurately identify cardiac sarcoidosis using non-invasive imaging modalities even without histological confirmation. Emerging guidelines are highlighting the rol

Reproducible network and regional topographies of abnormal glucose metabolism associated with progressive supranuclear palsy: Multivariate and univariate analyses in American and Chinese patient cohorts.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare movement disorder and often difficult to distinguish clinically from Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) in early phases. In this study, we report reproducible disease-related topographies of brain network and regional glucose metabolism associated with PSP in clinically-confirmed independent cohorts of PSP, MSA, and PD patients and healthy controls in the USA and China. Using 18 F-FDG PET images from PSP and healthy subjects, we applied spatial covariance analysis with bootstrapping to identify a PSP-related pattern (PSPRP)

Added Value of Including Entire Brain on Body Imaging With FDG PET/MRI.

OBJECTIVE: FDG PET/MRI examination of the body is routinely performed from the skull base to the mid thigh. Many types of brain abnormalities potentially could be detected on PET/MRI if the head was included. The objective of this study was therefore to identify and characterize brain findings incidentally detected on PET/MRI of the body with the head included. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 269 patients with FDG PET/MRI whole-body scans that included the head. PET/MR images of the brain were reviewed by a nuclear medicine physician and neuroradiologist, first individual

Concurrent benign metastasizing leiomyoma in the lung and lumbar spine with elevated standardized uptake value level in positron-emission tomography computed tomography: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is rare condition involving distant metastases secondary to benign uterine leiomyoma, and it is most commonly found in the lungs. It rarely metastasizes to the spine to cause osteolytic damage and spinal canal compression. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 51-year-old woman with low back and bilateral leg pain and paresthesia was admitted to our ward. She has a previous medical history of uterine leiomyomas. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed vertebral body osteolytic destruction and soft tissue mass in the L4/5 with a secondary lumbar sp
