Intestinal Dominance by Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in Pediatric Liver Transplant Patients.

Pediatric liver transplantation (PLTx) is commonly associated with extensive antibiotic treatments that can produce gut microbiome alterations and open the way to dominance by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). In this study, the relationship between intestinal Relative Loads (RLs) of β-lactamase genes, antibiotic consumption, microbiome disruption, and the extraintestinal dissemination of MDROs among PLTx patients is investigated. 28 PLTx patients were included, from whom 169 rectal swabs were collected. Total DNA was extracted and blaCTX-M-1-Family, blaOXA-1, blaOXA-48, and blaVIM were q

Evaluation of an accelerated protocol for detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing gram-negative bacilli from positive blood cultures.

We evaluated a protocol for the accelerated detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in gram-negative bloodstream pathogens. Two hundred eighty-three blood culture bottles were subjected to direct ESBL testing by inoculating samples directly from blood culture bottles onto agar plates containing cefotaxime and ceftazidime disks, with and without clavulanate. Standard ESBL testing in accordance with the NCCLS guidelines after subculturing on agar plates was performed in parallel. Results of the direct ESBL testing were reported 2.3 days sooner and were comparable to those of the s

The white pulp in the setting of the septic spleen caused by different bacteria: a comparative morphometric study.

In the past little attention has been paid to histomorphologic changes accompanying the phenomenon of the septic spleen, thus indirectly reinforcing the old axiom that the spleen is an organ of mystery. It is especially noteworthy that the relationship between different causative bacteria and histopathologic abnormalities of the white pulp has not been investigated. In this study morphometric analysis was performed on the white pulp of 30 spleens obtained at autopsy from individuals with premortal sepsis. A strictly defined age- and sex-matched control group was analyzed for statistical compar

[Immuno-bacteriological characteristics of septic shock in children of early age].

During bacteriological investigation, conducted in children of early age for generalized septic state in the septic shock (SS) period, there was established predominance of gramnegative conditionally pathogenic microorganisms. Initially there was noted the increase of peroxidal oxidation of lipids (POL) intensity with suppression of cellular and humoral immunity factors. Application of the medical plasmapheresis method and immunoglobulin in complex treatment of SS renders stimulative influence on homeostasis, promotes favourable course of the disease, prevention of complications.

Fecal bacterial activity in symptomatic carbohydrate malabsorption: effect on the fecal short-chain fatty acid ratio.

BACKGROUND: It is still not clear why only some patients with carbohydrate malabsorption experience symptoms. In a previous study on healthy fructose malabsorbers an increased degradation of fructose in anaerobic fecal cultures from symptomatic malabsorbers was found, indicating increased bacterial activity. In the present study, the same investigation was repeated in patients with nonspecific abdominal complaints and fructose malabsorption. Moreover fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), products of colonic bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates were measured. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A standar

A freshwater anaerobe coupling acetate oxidation to tetrachloroethylene dehalogenation.

Strain TT4B has been isolated from anaerobic sediments known to be contaminated with a variety of organic solvents. It is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium and grew anaerobically with acetate as the electron donor and tetrachloroethylene as the electron acceptor in a mineral medium. cis-Dichloroethylene was the halogenated product. This strain did not grow fermentatively and used only acetate or pyruvate as electron donors. Tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene were used as electron acceptors, as were ferric nitriloacetate and fumarate. Nitrogen and sulfur oxyanions were not able to su
