Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of palliative care services at five tertiary hospitals in nigeria: a qualitative formative study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care (PC) is critical for improving the quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illnesses, yet it remains inaccessible or underdeveloped in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. Understanding the factors influencing PC implementation is a crucial first step toward strengthening health system readiness and responsiveness to meet the growing demand for PC services in Nigeria and similar settings. METHODS: We conducted five in-depth interviews and ten focus group discussions to explore health provider, patient and caregiver perspectives on barriers and

Documenting Trends in Malaria Data Reporting Accuracy Using Routine Data Quality Audits in Zambia, 2015-2022.

Since 2015, the Zambia National Malaria Elimination Centre has conducted routine data quality audits in Central, Southern, and Western provinces, but trends in data reporting accuracy have not been examined. Routine data quality audit data collected at health facilities reporting into the monthly health management information system (HMIS) and weekly malaria rapid reporting system (MRRS) were used to measure data reporting accuracy trends from 2015 to 2022 and potential influencing factors using three data elements: outpatient department attendance and rapid diagnostic test (RDT)-tested cases

Design and Implementation of Brief Interventions to Address Noncommunicable Diseases in Uzbekistan.

In Uzbekistan, NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes, accounted for over 80% of mortality in 2019. In 2021, national stakeholders, in conjunction with the World Health Organization, identified brief interventions (BIs) to implement in primary health care settings to change unhealthy behaviors and reduce the burden of NCDs in the country. BIs consist of a validated set of questions to identify and measure NCD behavioral risk factors and a short conversation with patients/clients about their behavior, as well as the provision of a referral opportunity for further in-depth

Scoping Review of Economic Analyses of Rare Kidney Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Rare kidney diseases (RKDs) place a substantial economic burden on patients and health systems, the extent of which is unknown and may be systematically underestimated by health economic techniques. We aimed to investigate the economic burden and cost-effectiveness evidence base for RKDs. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review to identify economic evaluations, health technology assessments, and cost-of-illness studies relating to RKDs, published since 2012. RESULTS: A total of 161 published studies, including 66 cost-of-illness studies and 95 economic evaluations; 72

Sexually Transmitted Infection Point-of-Care Testing in Resource-Limited Settings: A Narrative Review Guided by an Implementation Framework.

Most sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired in resource-limited settings (RLSs) where laboratory diagnostic access is limited. Advancements in point-of-care testing (POC) technology have the potential to bring STI testing to many RLSs. We define POC as performed near the patient and with results readily available to inform clinical practice. The World Health Organization Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases further outlines desirable POC characteristics with the REASSURED criteria.Despite advantages related to immediate test-and-treat care, integrating

The experience of food insecurity during and following homelessness in high-income countries: A systematic review and meta-aggregation.

Homelessness is a pervasive challenge caused by poverty which continues to grow in economically developed countries, posing significant health impacts (Fazel et al., Lancet, 384: 1529-1540, 2014). While food security related to poverty and low income has been investigated, this review specifically explores the experience of food security during and following homelessness. Given the fact that the health of individuals who experience homelessness is known to be poor and the importance of nutrition, this is a necessary contribution. Informed by a health equity lens, this review synthesises the fi

Structural Barriers to HIV Prevention and Services: Perspectives of African American Women in Low-Income Communities.

BACKGROUND: African American women are at a disproportionate HIV risk compared with other U.S. women. Studies show that complex structural and social determinants, rather than individual behaviors, place African American women at greater risk of HIV infection; however, little is known about women's views of what puts them at risk. AIMS: This study sought to comprehend the perceptions of African American women living in low-income housing regarding the factors that influence both their personal sexual health behaviors and use of HIV prevention services. METHODS: We conducted seven focus group

Malaria in populations with mining occupation, Colombia, 2012-2018.

Introduction: Malaria represents one of the biggest public health challenges, mainly in poor countries. Colombia has social characteristics such as migration, informal work, and economic shortages that favor illegal mining activities. The study of the malaria situation in these areas would allow establishing the bases for its prevention, control, and treatment in the existing public health programs. Objective: To describe the malaria situation in Colombian mining populations between 2012 and 2018. Materials and methods. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study with graphs and maps. For t

Perceptions, practices and health seeking behaviour constrain JE/AES interventions in high endemic district of North India.

BACKGROUND: Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) stay as poorly understood phenomena in India. Multiple linkages to determinants such as poverty, socio-economic status, gender, environment, and population distribution, make it a greater developmental issue than just a zoonotic disease. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted to map knowledge, perceptions and practices of community and health systems level stakeholders. Seventeen interviews with utilizers of AES care, care givers from human and veterinary sectors, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), and pig ow

[Characterization of malaria mortality in Valle del Cauca, 2005-2006].

INTRODUCTION: Valle del Cauca is one of the states in Colombia that reports a high number of deaths due to malaria. Understanding the basis of malarial deaths is useful for assessing the efficacy of the health system and to identify areas where improvements are necessary to decrease malaria mortality. OBJECTIVE: Potential determinants of mortality in malaria cases are characterized in a demographic study centered in Valle del Cauca. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive analysis was directed to 25 cases of malaria death occurring in Valle del Cauca during 2005 and 2006. RESULTS: The mean age

The Arthritis, Rheumatism and Aging Medical Information System (ARAMIS): still young at 30 years.

Chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, diabetes, and cancer are among major public health concerns. To understand their cumulative risk factors and antecedents, a chronic disease databank consisting of time-oriented, multidisciplinary longitudinal data, prospectively collected on consecutive patients and describing their clinical courses, provides a systematic anthology of patient reported outcome (PRO) data. ARAMIS, which began in the mid-1970s, was the first large-scale chronic disease data bank system. Outcomes data are collected using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ)

Health seeking behaviour and self-treatment for common childhood symptoms in rural Guatemala.

This study was conducted in the Guatemalan highland department of Sacatepequez, in a sample of 146 rural women insured by the Social Security system. It examined their health care behaviour when their children presented common childhood symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, cough and worms. The mothers generally sought help and treatment advice from an older woman in the family, and did so more often for diarrhoea (82%) and fever (64%) than for cough (43%) or worms (28%). Obtaining advice in a pharmacy or from a drug seller ranked second (range: 8%-38%, depending on the symptom), before the procu

Major cardiovascular events after COVID-19, event rates post-vaccination, antiviral or anti-inflammatory therapy, and temporal trends: Rationale and methodology of the CORONA-VTE-Network study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with excess risk of cardiovascular and thrombotic events in the early post-infection period and during convalescence. Despite the progress in our understanding of cardiovascular complications, uncertainty persists with respect to more recent event rates, temporal trends, association between vaccination status and outcomes, and findings within vulnerable subgroups such as older adults (aged 65 years or older), or those undergoing hemodialysis. Sex-informed findings, including results among pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as

Evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of evidence-based early-life nutrition interventions in a community setting a hybrid type 1 non-randomized trial - the Nutrition Now project protocol.

UNLABELLED: Disappointingly few efficacious health interventions are successfully scaled up and implemented in real world settings. This represents an evidence-to-practice gap, with loss of opportunity to improve practice. Aiming to improve nutrition in the first 1000 days of life, we have combined four efficacious dietary interventions into a single adapted digital resource (Nutrition Now) for implementation in a Norwegian community setting. Nutrition Now targets pregnant women and parents of 0-2-year-olds with messages focusing on healthy dietary behaviours. Early childhood education and car

Systematic Literature Review on Public Health Impacts of Tourette Syndrome and Persistent Tic Disorders: General Health, Health Conditions, and Health Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The association of tic disorders and physical health has not been comprehensively described. This systematic review summarized the associations between indicators of physical health (e.g., health-related quality of life [HR-QoL]), health conditions, and health behaviors with Tourette syndrome (TS) and persistent tic disorders (PTD) in individuals across the lifespan. METHODS: We used multiple databases to search the literature through March 5, 2025, and identified 84 studies published in English in 2003 or later that reported health-related outcomes among individuals with TS/PTD a

Racism, African American Women, and Their Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Review of Historical and Contemporary Evidence and Implications for Health Equity.

Background: The sexual and reproductive health of African American women has been compromised due to multiple experiences of racism, including discriminatory healthcare practices from slavery through the post-Civil Rights era. However, studies rarely consider how the historical underpinnings of racism negatively influence the present-day health outcomes of African American women. Although some improvements to ensure equitable healthcare have been made, these historical influences provide an unexplored context for illuminating present-day epidemiology of sexual and reproductive health dispariti
