Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 infection.

To determine if people infected with SARS-CoV-2 were at higher risk of developing selected medical conditions post-recovery, data were extracted from the database of a large health maintenance organization (HMO) in Israel between March 2020 and May 2021. For each condition, a condition-naïve group prior to COVID-19 (PCR-positive) infection were compared to a condition-naïve, non-COVID-19 infected group, matched by gender, age, socioeconomic status, minority group status and number of months visited primary care physician (PCP) in previous year. Diagnosis and recuperation dates for each COVID-1

Safety of Endomyocardial Biopsy in New-Onset Acute Heart Failure Requiring Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

BACKGROUND: Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) has an important role in determining the pathogenesis of new-onset acute heart failure (new-AHF) when noninvasive testing is impossible. However, data on safety and histopathologic outcomes in patients requiring veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is lacking. METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter cohort of patients undergoing EMB while requiring VA-ECMO for new-AHF between 1990 and 2020 was compared with a cohort of nontransplant related biopsies not requiring VA-ECMO. Primary end point of the study was to determine the safety of

Association between spatial working memory and Re-experiencing symptoms in PTSD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Few studies have evaluated the link between working memory (WM) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, it is unknown whether this relationship is accounted for by other relevant variables including negative affect, emotional dysregulation, or general non-WM-related cognitive control deficits, which are associated with PTSD. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a computerized WM task could predict PTSD symptomology incrementally beyond the contribution of other relevant variables associated with PTSD. METHODS: Thirty veterans we

Acetaldehyde Enhances Alcohol Sensitivity and Protects against Alcoholism: Evidence from Alcohol Metabolism in Subjects with Variant ALDH2*2 Gene Allele.

Alcoholism is a complex behavior trait influenced by multiple genes as well as by sociocultural factors. Alcohol metabolism is one of the biological determinants that can significantly influence drinking behaviors. Alcohol sensitivity is thought to be a behavioral trait marker for susceptibility to develop alcoholism. The subjective perceptions would be an indicator for the alcohol preference. To investigate alcohol sensitivity for the variants ADH1B*2 and ALDH2*2, sixty healthy young males with different combinatory ADH1B and ALDH2 genotypes, ADH1B*2/*2-ALDH2*1/*1 (n = 23), ADH1B*2/*2-ALDH2*1

Association of right atrial conduit phase with right ventricular lusitropic function in pulmonary hypertension.

Alterations of right atrial (RA) function have emerged as determinants of outcome in pulmonary hypertension (PH). We aimed to clarify the pathophysiological associations of impaired RA conduit function with right ventricular (RV) function in PH. In 51 patients with PH (48 with pulmonary arterial hypertension), RA conduit function was assessed as echocardiographic peak early diastolic strain rate (PEDSR). PEDSR and cardiac magnetic resonance parameters were measured within 24 h of right heart catheterization and generation of pressure-volume loops to assess RV diastolic (RV end-diastolic pressu

Health-Related Quality of Life Following Total Laryngectomy: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer has shifted from total laryngectomy (TL) toward laryngeal-preserving therapies due to a general perception that TL has a significantly negative impact on the individual's life. However, whether the physical impairments related to TL translate to a reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has not yet been determined. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to determine how HRQoL is affected following TL. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. Inclusion criteria were o

Prematurity blunts the feeding-induced stimulation of translation initiation signaling and protein synthesis in muscle of neonatal piglets.

Postnatal growth of lean mass is commonly blunted in preterm infants and may contribute to short- and long-term morbidities. To determine whether preterm birth alters the protein anabolic response to feeding, piglets were delivered at term or preterm, and fractional protein synthesis rates (Ks) were measured at 3 days of age while fasted or after an enteral meal. Activation of signaling pathways that regulate protein synthesis and degradation were determined. Relative body weight gain was lower in preterm than in term. Gestational age at birth (GAB) did not alter fasting plasma glucose or insu

Four-second dynamic exercise testing (T4S) for the assessment of cardiac vagal modulation in obese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Reduced vagal activity is often present in obese adolescents. Simple and practical strategies for the assessment of isolate parasympathetic outflow in this population are therefore useful. OBJECTIVES: To compare the methods derived from heart rate variability (HRV) analysis at rest and 4 s exercise testing (T4S) for the assessment of cardiac parasympathetic modulation in adolescents classified as obese (OB) or with normal weight (NW). Additionally, associations between total and trunk fat versus autonomic modulation determined by the two methods were calculated. APPROACH: A cross

Psychophysiological assessment and correction of spatial disorientation during simulated Orion spacecraft re-entry.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

Assessing Heart Rate Variability As a Surrogate Measure of Cardiac Autonomic Function in Chronic Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury.

Background: Although cardiac autonomic dysfunction is a contributing factor for cardiovascular disease development in individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), it remains poorly understood. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has the potential to non-invasively assess the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The study objectives are (a) to determine if there are differences in HRV measures across neurological level of impairment (NLI) and American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) subgroups, and (b) to determine if there is a relationship between HRV frequency measures (l
