Natural history of complex transposition of great arteries in an adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Transposition of the great arteries is the most common cyanotic cardiac lesion in newborns. Transposition of the great arteries without surgical correction is fatal during the first year of life. Contemporary outcome studies have shown that survival rates after surgery are excellent and most patients live to adulthood. CASE SUMMARY: Woman with complex transposition of the great arteries with atrial and ventricular septal defects and subvalvular and valvular pulmonary stenosis, who has survived until the age of 31 years without surgery. The diagnosis was made by echocardiography an

Angiogenic Properties of Menstrual Stem Cells Are Impaired in Women with a History of Preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder defined by the new onset of hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. Although its precise etiology is still unknown, there is evidence suggesting that it may be a consequence of impaired decidual and stromal cell function. Recently, a stem cell population derived from endometrial tissue and isolated from menstrual effluent called menstrual stem cells (MenSCs) has been identified. MenSCs exhibit important angiogenic and inflammatory properties that may contribute to both normal and pathological complications of implantation and plac

Racial differences of incident diabetes postpartum in women with a history of gestational diabetes.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate the race-specific association between a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and incidence of type 2 diabetes and evaluate how the risk changed over different years after delivery. METHODS: We performed two large cohorts - the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort and the Tianjin GDM Observational Study. The multivariate cox regression model was used to assess the risk of incident postpartum diabetes between women with and without prior GDM. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 13.8 years, 405 women dev

RBM10 truncation in astroblastoma in a patient with history of mandibular ameloblastoma: A case report.

Astroblastoma is a rare glial neoplasm composed of cells that have broad processes oriented perpendicular to central vessels and often demonstrate vascular sclerosis. The WHO 2016 classification does not specify a grading system for astroblastoma, and categorizes them as well-differentiated or malignant. These broad classification rubrics, however, do not accurately predict clinical outcome. Genetic profiling of astroblastoma has therefore been of particular interest in the recent years. These efforts, although in small number, have revealed heterogeneous molecular findings that may explain as

NEUROLOGIC AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FINDINGS IN SEA TURTLES WITH HISTORY OF TRAUMATIC INJURY.

Boat strikes have been widely documented as a major cause of anthropogenic trauma and mortality in sea turtles. Axial trauma in these species involves the head and/or carapace and may cause severe damage to the nervous and pulmonary systems. The aims of this study were to develop an updated protocol for neurologic examinations in sea turtles, to describe computed tomography (CT) findings in sea turtles with sustained trauma, and to associate CT findings with neurologic status in sea turtles with and without traumatic injury. Ten sea turtles were examined, six green (Chelonia mydas) and four lo

Adeno-associated virus in the liver: natural history and consequences in tumour development.

OBJECTIVE: Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a defective mono-stranded DNA virus, endemic in human population (35%-80%). Recurrent clonal AAV2 insertions are associated with the pathogenesis of rare human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) developed on normal liver. This study aimed to characterise the natural history of AAV infection in the liver and its consequence in tumour development. DESIGN: Viral DNA was quantified in tumour and non-tumour liver tissues of 1461 patients. Presence of episomal form and viral mRNA expression were analysed using a DNAse/TaqMan-based assay and quantitative RT-PCR

Clinical presentations of Hepatitis E: A clinical review with representative case histories.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) typically causes an acute, self-limiting hepatitis and is among the commonest cause of such presentations. Hepatitis E viral infection is also increasingly recognized as a cause of chronic hepatitis amongst the immunocompromised, particularly amongst solid organ transplant recipients. Chronic HEV infection remains an underdiagnosed disease and chronic infection can lead to rapidly progressive liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. This review examines current understanding of the HEV. We illustrate typical clinical presentations, management strategies [(based upon guidelines fro

The History of Enterovirus A71 Outbreaks and Molecular Epidemiology in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the common causative pathogens for hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) affecting young children. HFMD outbreak can result in a substantial pediatric hospitalization and burden the healthcare services, especially in less-developed countries. Since the initial epidemic of predominantly EV-A71 in California in 1969, the high prevalence of HFMD in the Asia-pacific region and elsewhere around the world represents a significant morbidity in this age group. With the advent of rapid and accurate diagnostic tools, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of lab

Evolutionary history and adaptation of a human pygmy population of Flores Island, Indonesia.

Flores Island, Indonesia, was inhabited by the small-bodied hominin species Homo floresiensis, which has an unknown evolutionary relationship to modern humans. This island is also home to an extant human pygmy population. Here we describe genome-scale single-nucleotide polymorphism data and whole-genome sequences from a contemporary human pygmy population living on Flores near the cave where H. floresiensis was found. The genomes of Flores pygmies reveal a complex history of admixture with Denisovans and Neanderthals but no evidence for gene flow with other archaic hominins. Modern individuals

Toxoplasma Gondii Infection and a History of Surgery: A Case Control Seroprevalence Study.

We determined the association between having a history of surgery and the seroreactivity to T. gondii. An age- and gender-matched case-control study of 391 subjects with a history of surgery and 391 subjects without this history was performed. Sera of subjects were analyzed for detection of anti-T. gondii immunoglobulin G (IgG) and M (IgM) antibodies using enzyme-linked immunoassays. Anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies were found in 25 (6.4%) of the 391 cases and in 21 (5.4%) of the 391 controls (odds ratio [OR] = 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.66-2.18; P = 0.54). Asian American Women's Victimization History and In-The-Moment Responses to Partner Violence.

Between 20% and 50% of Asian American women report experiencing partner violence (PV). Furthermore, nearly half of PV victims experience their first assault between the age of 18 and 24 years, suggesting that Asian American college women may be particularly at risk of PV. Experiencing childhood abuse (CA) may impair women's capacity to perceive risk during a potential PV situation, increasing their risk for revictimization. The purpose of the current study was to examine differences among Asian American college women's (N = 324) in-the-moment behavioral intention, risk perception, and likeliho

History of psychosis and mania, and outcomes after kidney transplantation - a retrospective study.

History of psychosis or mania, if uncontrolled, both represent relative contraindications for kidney transplantation. We examined 3680 US veterans who underwent kidney transplantation. The diagnosis of history of psychosis/mania was based on a validated algorithm. Measured confounders were used to create a propensity score-matched cohort (n = 442). Associations between pretransplantation psychosis/mania and death with functioning graft, all-cause death, graft loss, and rejection were examined in survival models and logistic regression models. Post-transplant medication nonadherence was assesse

A peculiar condition: A history of the Jumping Frenchmen Syndrome in scientific and popular accounts.

In 1878, Dr. George Beard reported to other neurologists that in Maine there existed French-Canadian woodsmen who jumped when excited. Beard observed the phenomenon firsthand and his subsequent reports attracted the attention of Georges Gilles de la Tourette in France and other neurologists worldwide for a couple of decades. During the second half of the twentieth century, interest in the jumpers revived among neurologists, as some came forward with similar observations in different parts of Canada and the United States. This article compares and contrasts the scientific reports of the jumping

Chronic lacrimal canaliculitis - the answer to a three-year history of red eye.

Chronic lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare infection of the lacrimal system, and can lead to misdiagnosis due to its overlapping presentation to other common entities. The authors report a case of lacrimal canaliculitis with a three-year history of recurrent unilateral red eye and mucopurulent discharge. Here, we describe the clinical course, surgical details, and microbial analysis of canaliculitis infection.

Contraceptive use among migrant women with a history of induced abortion in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Women's contraceptive choices may change after an induced abortion, due to contraceptive counselling or a behavioural change prompted by the experience. The effect may vary between women; sociocultural background, for example, may affect their subsequent reproductive choices. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether women's current contraceptive use was differently associated with a history of induced abortion among immigrant groups in Finland (Russian, Kurdish and Somali) and the general Finnish population. METHODS: We analysed data from two surveys, the Migrant Health and Wellbeing study

A Case of IgG4-Related Aortitis and Pericarditis: Diagnostic Challenges and Natural History.

BACKGROUND IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic inflammatory condition with a myriad of presentations related to the pattern of organ involvement. Diagnostic workup for IgG4-RD requires a high index of suspicion, and further workup often includes the results of serological testing for elevated levels of IgG4. Correlation of presentation, past medical history, and histopathologic analysis are required to make a diagnosis. CASE REPORT In this case, incidental discovery of non-infectious aortitis and pulmonary mass lesions were the specific signs that led to the consideration of IgG4-RD.
