The incidence of deep vein thrombosis in 244 patients who had total knee replacement has been studied. In 120 the prosthesis was cemented and in 124 it was cementless. In all cases the replacement was primary and a porous-coated prosthesis with a porous-coated central tibial stem was used. Deep vein thrombosis was diagnosed by venography, and pulmonary embolism by perfusion scanning. Three reverse flow island flaps based on the saphenous vessels were successfully transferred. The reverse flow saphenous island flap is harvested on the medial aspect of the lower half of the thigh. The effect of SOD on staphylococcal arthritis has not been successfully evaluated to date. We developed an animal model to investigate the correlation. Using 16 rabbits divided into four groups, we injected two groups with staphylococcus aureus and the other two with NaCl. One group in each was also injected with SOD. A modified posterior soft tissue release has been used in treating severe flexion contracture of the knee in 30 patients (36 knees). The operative technique has been modified with respect to the skin incision, and lengthening of the medial hamstrings. It is performed without a tourniquet. Severe knee flexion deformity with popliteal webbing or pterygium is considered to be uncorrectable. The soft tissues and, in particular, the main nerves and vessels are short relative to the bone. Femoral shortening was used in correction of such a deformity in a child with arthrogryposis. The operative procedure is described. Femoral shortening should be considered as an aid to correction of any severe knee flexion deformity.

We have reviewed 32 patients who sustained a substantial knee ligament injury during adolescence when their knee epiphyses were open. They were all treated non-operatively and re-examined and evaluated in detail after an average of eight years. There were 25 Grade II partial tears and seven Grade III complete tears. After Grade II injuries the functional results were excellent or good, though static instability had not improved from the initial post-traumatic examination. A study was made of 544 cases with lower limb deficiencies caused by obliterative diseases; 262 cases were below-knee amputees. In order to determine whether degenerative changes in knee ligaments precede or follow their rupture, the knee joints of 55 adult male broiler breeding fowls have been studied. All birds were between 60 and 62 weeks old when examined. Dissections at autopsy revealed whether collateral or cruciate ligaments were deranged, but only intact ligaments were processed for histo-pathological examination. Changes in the position and structure of the patella and their importance with regard to pain patterns are described on the basis of long-term observation of the Blauth prosthesis. Examinations were performed on 206 knee prostheses on average 37.6 months (min. 12, max. 120 months) after implantation. The transdermal absorption by tissues of salicylate from triethanolamine salicylate (TEA/S) ointment applied to canine and human skin was shown to be consistent, significant, and reproducible. Salicylate levels were measured using thin-layer chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and radiochemistry. Absorption was directly proportional to the concentrations of the active ingredient in the ointment up to the 10 per cent preparation. Segmental blood pressure criteria for below-knee amputations were assessed retrospectively. 40 patients underwent 44 below-knee amputations for advanced lower limb ischaemia. Preoperative systolic blood pressure measurements using a Doppler device as a distal sensor were performed on 31 limbs to be amputated. Healing occurred in all limbs with calf systolic pressures of 68 mmHg or more and distal thigh systolic pressures of 100 mmHg or more.
