Embryonal sarcoma of the liver is an unusual tumor. The cystic form is rare and can mimic hydatid disease. We present a case that was mistakenly treated as a hydatid cyst for 3 months. Surgery was successful in removing the mass.

OBJECTIVES: To study the incidence, presentation, and outcome of patients with severe liver disease in an urban Indian population.
METHOD: 26 patients with severe liver disease were identified in the study period of one year at a teaching tertiary care institute in Mumbai. Investigations included bedside Bleeding and Clotting Time (BT/CT), coagulation profiles and liver and renal function tests. Acute liver disease was diagnosed in three pregnant patients: two 30-year-old women had a 'haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets' (HELLP) syndrome and acute fatty liver of pregnancy, respectively, and a 20-year-old woman had acute liver failure due to acute hepatitis B. Diffuse hemangiomatoses are extremely rare in adults. The etiology and natural history of the disease are not well understood. A case of diffuse hemangiomatosis of the liver and spleen associated with progressive liver failure, thrombocytopenia, and disturbance of blood coagulation (comparable to Kasabach-Merritt syndrome) is presented in a 62-year-old male. We describe the histopathological and immunohistochemical findings and illustrate the morphological aspects of differential diagnosis, distinguishing the disease from other vascular proliferations.

Combined transplantation of the heart, lung, and liver may be indicated in patients with either end-stage respiratory failure complicated by advanced liver disease or end-stage liver failure complicated by advanced lung disease.
